Dawes

Best of Luck to big Dawes at the Dees. Hope he does well for you and seems a reasonable deal to me.

As for the wonderful contributions from the Carlton flock, there may be the slightest hint of disgruntlement...

Think they were in the hunt for Cloke, Lynch, Dawes; don't think any will come out in navy blue in 2013...
If nothing else Chris will give his all and represent the Club just as well of the field as well. A huge side benefit when you bring blokes of his character to a club, Ball another prime example.

I didn't realize we were recruiting him to be our number 1 forward..

If he kicks over 30 goals I'd be happy.

Yep if he's healthy and kicks 30-40 goals I reckon we've gotten our money's worth.

Levi will be a better player than dawes next year as our second forward.

Dawes has only ever played in a top four team and kicked 30 in a dominate Premiership tea mwhere Jolly and Leigh Brown were the rucks, how do you really think he will go at Melbourne, will less supply and worse delivery?

Have you forgotten that he got dropped last in rd 23 even though they had no one to bring in? and that they chose to take the 30 year old Q Stick instead of him?

They had no cap space, they had to get rid of dawes, you could have gotten him for much, much cheaper than pick 20....and that pick upgrade at the end is just insulting . Was this trade a thankyou for them letting you keep the $$ from the queens birthday every year?

do you know what contradicting yourself is?.....seems as though the ones coming on here trying to tell us how 'bad' the trade was have been, Essendon supporters, who cant seem to beat us and Carlton supporters who Dawes turned down....

Worry about your own club, neither of yours made finals either!

I don't have a great love for your club, but I genuinely wish Dawesy all the best at Melbourne. He is such an easy player to love, and I'm sure some doubters will find out why next year.
I hope he turns his career around and gets back to his 2010 form.
Enjoy the one and only, Chris Dawes;)

To be fair I haven't seen any Essendon supporters bagging this trade?? - I spent the best part of 3-4 paragraphs on the previous page explaining why I think Dawes is a great pick up...please try not to lump us in with the Carlton supporters :).

FWIW, Dawes would be an absolute lock for the best 22 had Carlton snagged him.....suggestions that Levi Casbolt is a better player aren't worth responding to.

And who the hell have Carlton managed to pick up via trade (and, excluding their midfield, they have a need to recruit certain players) apart from Malthouse who only took the job to get back at Eddie.

Most of the comments were deleted as they were blatant trolls

Well there was one Essendon supporter posting in here previously...his comments have been deleted, maybe i should of said 'some' supporters.....

Not sure about some of Harrington's comments on SEN....

Saying that Clark is seen as the 'forward/ruck'.

I REALLY hope he'll be confined to forward line ruck duties or something, like Tippet did for Adelaide.

Hey guys,

Good get for your footy club. I am actually a bit shattered to lose Dawes. Sure he didn't have the best of years but we know what he is capable of.

You have done well out of this deal. Pick 20 is unknown quantity. But with Dawes you will get a big, mature bodied forward who gives 110% & plays with a lot passion.

Good luck Dawes..

He'll play the same way he did this year. Went into the ruck a fair bit.

Ok I'm going to ignore the floggery and trolls and naysayers

Criticism is welcome, but the problem is, no matter what we do, we can't win

"Errr, they've screwed their draft picks and pushed senior players out the door"

"Err, they've got too many kids"

"Err, they're bringing in some experienced mature plaers in an attempt to try and improve"

OF COURSE WE flipping ARE! Because we're completely devoid of any mature leadership and have been for decades (Neita / Jnr aside)

For too long our "senior" players have strutted and talked the talk, but not once walked the walk.

And people are surprised they've been chopped / demoted etc.

I am stoked with this news. I realise Dawes had an ordinary 2012 and an ordinary 2nd half of 2011....but he's proven he can be a target, in a premiership side FFS

Do people think that perhaps our woeful midfield will have more confidence looking up and spotting:

a.) Mitch with only 1 defender hanging off him
and
b.) and 2nd BIG target who isn't a backman cum makeshift forward

Neeld hasn't put a foot wrong since coming to the club IMO

Dawes is EXACTLY what we need, Pick 20 was a fair price that satisfied us and Collingwood

Neeld has a good relationship with Collingwood so he'd want the trade to work both ways

Swapping Pick 45 for 58 was just window dressing - anyone, and I mean ANYONE complaining about that swap is just being critical for the sake of it

Collingwood have done well to extract a couple of (LATE) 1st round picks, they'll use them well. But we got what we wanted, and more importantly NEEDED

A 2nd big fwd target

Fk the naysayers and trolls (who are mainly on the Main Bay1....I mean Main Board these days), this has been a killer trade period for us:

Pick 3 - Viney
Pick 4 - Wines?
Pick 13 - Hogan and Barry
Pick 26 downgraded to Pick 20 used on Dawes
Pick 45 downgraded to Pick 58 in the ND due to Dawes trade, could be used on Pedersen?

Shannon Byrnes - in under F/A

All of a sudden we have some experience (including premiership experience) coming in

We have a wrecking ball ready made mid in Viney (who has been with the club for a couple of years training under AFL training regime)
We have a bit of outside run in Barry virtually thrown in for nothing in the Hogan exchange

And we still have pick 4 to use in what's seen as a very strong top 5 / 10 draft

So - 2 x top 5 mids in a strong draft; a ready made experienced KPF; an outstanding junior KPF prospect who will get the benefit of 12 months in our system; a reportedly classy outside runner; and pacey dual premiership small forward

And who GAF if we're paying Dawes $500k p.a. (which is probably BS anyway), who on our list thus far deserves a payrise? so far no one. And it'll be front loaded to ensure when players do deserve it, they'll get it

2 years running, Neeld has got his man

And the mainboard trolls who say this has Schwab / Connolly all over it, this is pure Neeld

Finally, the draft has been reported as strong at the top end, yet weak after picks 15(ish) so there is absolutely no guarantee we'd draft someone better than Dawes with 20

I think the people bagging the trade are the people with serious short vision. Neeld knows more than any keyboard warriors out there.

However you are wrong that Dawes turned Carlton down. Carlton were never interested in Dawes. It was only guesses by the media that linked Carlton looking for a KPF and Malthouse to Carlton after Dawes.

That's fair and your opinion (and in no way having a go at you) but serious question

What could we have traded for that would've been more palatable?
I was fine with straight pick 20 and would have preferred 20 and an upgrade on 45 (to 38 or so, which is where I believe Collingwood's pick is).

Fair enough

I see the 45 to 58 as pure window dressing to get the job done and let Collingwood feel as though they'd dictated the terms

We probably won't be using 45 / 58 and we may get a 2nd rounder if Rivers goes to give to North if we're still after Pedersen

Dear Mark Neeld,
I have been patient, although like many other Dees supporters, am tired and emotional at the lack of competitiveness at the MFC.
Drafting Dawes is either genius, or you should fall on your sword by R5 next season. To draft a player that other clubs shun, or his current club is laughing at us by giving up a first round draft pick, you must have a genuine insight into why Dawes was terrible in 2012. He couldnt catch a cold in Alaska without clothes on. I sincerley hope you turn him around.
If your theory is to leave Dawes in the square to compete and have the fowards at his feet, I understand. If your gameplan still has 18 players push into defence with no-one to kick to, I will be asking for your resignation very early.
You have made some tough calls, and this is to be commended, but many of my fellow passionate Dees supporters are questioning your intentions and logic in this instance.
I was prepared to give up a used bandaid and half eaten week old souva for Dawes, but you have given him a payrise and used a first round pick.
Lets hope you have luck on your side.
Harvey
