Why do people keep using the Collingwood midfield theory? He was getting Travis Cloke scraps and Cloke is a big bloke so there aren't many scraps to be had.

I'm not buying into the thought that we've acquired some star like the rest of this board but he's getting underrated a bit, he's no world beater but he'll be a handy addition.

Who said Dawes is a star?????? I don't think one person has that I recall

He is a big TARGET and will take pressure of Mitch

Don't think anyone's under the illusion we drafted Buddy

Essendon recuit Goddard, Melbourne recruit Dawers and Byrnes. Spot the difference?

Yep - I spotted it straight away!
We got 2 players that are still dangerous when they have tagger attached to them, where as Essendon Got an EXTREMELY talented Player that got found out by Jordie McKenzie to not deal with a tagger so well, and therefore was useless.

The point is valid. Our midfield is terrible as we speak & Dawes had an elite midfield supplying him for the past 3-4 yrs!
If we use your comment above, Dawes will only be getting Clark's scraps & there are a lot less scraps or inside 50's coming his way at Melbourne. At least in the short term we hope!!!

As for world beater, who thinks that?

To be honest, I don't really mind if Dawes only kicks 30 goals next season.
One of the big problems the Dees have had for a long time is the lack of a target to hit coming out of defence. On the odd occasion that our key forward (Clark, Neita) has pushed up the ground to provide an option there has been no-one inside 50 to receive the next kick.
Finally we have two legitimate targets in our forward half. Both are big, powerful units with good tanks that are not afraid to work hard. One can sit deep, operating mainly within the 50 while the other can push a bit higher up the ground, starting around 30-40 metres out and taking marks between half forward and the wing.
How much more decisive do you think our backline will be if they look up and see Dawes or Clark leading in to space rather than Bate's red noggin? We turn the ball over in the back half because the players often have no-one to kick to so they handball, double back and play their way into trouble. Having a pressure release valve like a long kick to Dawes 1 on 1 on a wing will be a godsend.

We've recruited kids for years. F*cking years. Why are people getting their knickers in a twist about trading a pick for a big forward who can be a presence both on AND off the field? I applaud the club for finally realising that we need some experience as well as the plethora of kids we already have.

We are a fickle bunch sometimes. Not one person here has said at any time Dawes is a star - what he brings is an elite work ethic, leadership, a change of culture and the ability to be a big presence for us in the forward half of the year. I'd take that every day of the week for Pick 20. You guys that are complaining need to open your eyes.

He had a shit year in 2012? I agree. But one season doesn't make a player. Have some faith.

But they also say, you're only as good as your last game/season. :p

I think we paid overs for him, however if he can do his job and what is asked of him by Neeld then I'm ok with it. But one thing I do not want to see from him whilst he wears the red and blue is ****ing chest marks. It infuriates me. Arms out in front Dawesy please.

I Heard on SEN this morning someone (can't remember who it was) was saying that in 2014/15 Melbourne will have the Best forward line in the competition bar none. The only real Rival forecast is Hawthorn, but they picked holes in them.

Now, This was clearly taking the additions of Dawes, Hogan and Byrnes to the forward line to compliment Mitch. Pedo was also spoken about briefly saying he'd bolster us up back and we'd be VERY strong there, and due to the extra Targets up forward, plus the run of Davey, Barry and Blease, our Midfield will make huge leaps and be much more effective.

Apart from making me chuckle because we heard this last year, the year before that and so on, I actually believe it may be the case now. Surely there is alot of excitement around the players in regards to the pick ups. Obviously some players not so much as others, but none the less the core group would have to be excited.

Neeld has, in one year, given basic instructions on what he wants players to do. They either did what he asked, worked at it, or dropped their heads. We've had players walk, and we've landed some absolute class, now it's Phase II of his plan, getting his troops to gel and reinforce the game plan and win more games.

I think I can see a light, can anyone else?

Remains to be seen whether Neeld can coach, but he's certainly going the right way about the total restructure of the club

Should've been the way it was done in '07

There won't be any "run of Davey".
Davey can still Run. He's not AS quick as he once was, but he still hammers. The team is getting structure now, this is going to allow our players to utilize their natural abilities without the chaos we've seen in recent years.

He won't last to 2014 on the list.

Thank god you didn't say that on the mainboard - we'd be dodging missiles for a month with statements like that!

100% agree with this.
With Rivers officially gone we've lost 3 of our 4 most experienced players (Green, Moloney) and a whopping 549 games of experience. Adding to that, our most experienced player (Davey) is no certainty in our best 22.
People are criminally undervaluing the importance of Dawes experience at the top level. Neeld said it all year that we were often 50 games less experienced PER PLAYER compared to our opposition. Only GWS and GC averaged fewer games played than us.
I think the football department has done a great job of balancing experience with youth this off-season so far. We're in a much stronger place because of it.

heh - sounds like alot of blind optimism - and look it might be - but I thought that big things were coming this season - well clearly I was wrong - and I'm fine with that - but as many have said - I've never seen the Dees be this aggressive in bringing in SOLID Talent - and I Mean Talent.

Rivers, Clark, Jones, Howe, Watts, Grimes, Frawley, McDonald would all get games.

Blease, Trengove, Martin would all likely get a go as role players rotating through the forward-line.

Agree with this except maybe Rivers and I would also have Jamar in for Jolly. Would you put Jamar in front of Jolly as well? With a backline full of KPBs like Frawley, Brown, Keefe, maybe Martin (or forward) and probabaly Reid playing as the floating backman (not sure if Rivers gets in IMO) and a forwards like of Clark, Howe, Cloke and maybe Dawes, would Watts play up forward or back or even on the wings? Interesting who gets in to the backline in terms of smalls with Shaw, Grimes, McDonald, Blease, Toovey (bad kick but lightning and great defenfer) and OBrien all fighting for potential spots. I would definately have Grimes and McDonald in but not sure about Blease (maybe on the bench).

Unless he went back to his 2010 form I would not have Jamar in front of Jolly.

You lost me.

People who are saying we dont have the midfield to get the ball into our bog forwards -

Please explain to me how Clark kicked 29 goals in 10 games.

This bears some merit. Our midfield isn't great but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Just needs some spread and pace, really.

That Chris Dawes thread on the Mainboard is home to some of the biggest w@nkers I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing. Pack of ignoramuses with no understanding of the draft or what our club needs. Sorry, just had to vent that...

I don't understand why people bother to have discussions on the Main Board, or even Bay 13 for that matter. Just full of faceless keyboard warriors.

I'm rapidly coming to that conclusion. Do you ever wish that BF were smaller? There are just too many opinions, too many of the faceless types. I think discussion goes better when there are less than 100 active members and the morons get weeded out by them. Seeing threads on big issues that have 100 pages in a day is just too overwhelming. Sometimes less is more. At least our board has been good value.
