Kelly doesn’t need to improve as he is a good player now.
How s any 18 year old a top 10 pick when no one knows if they can play yet.
If kelly played for us and The shoe was on the other foot we would easily be asking for a top 10 pick.
We have enough Auskick players on our list developing, we are in a premiership window now and for the next 2-3 years. Has no club learnt anything from Hawthorn yet, you trade out and in to win flags. The draft is thrown on the scrap heap when in this mode. Ignore the draft and trade.

Agreed, all though Kelly is really a poor mans Gaff unfortunately. Sucks the midfield just starts humming along and one of our best leaves... I really hope Gaff stays, I don't think any situation where he leaves ends up making us a better team next year.

Best case is we trade him for pick whatever and just happen to land a gun midfielder who impacts first year... *hope*

Apparently Preuss has requested a trade to Melbourne :drunk:

Yep, that is just weird.

Goldsteign is older Gawn and that Weiderman young fella is ripping it up.

If Preuss wanted opportunity Melbourne is the last place to go.

Does this mean the Dees are considering moving on Hogan and Weiderman is their FF?

Could that be how they could land Gaff in a trade?

Out Hogan to Freo for pick 5 + ?, in Pruess and Gaff.

Pick 5 to Eagles for Gaff?

Quite a strange situation really.

I reckon he will stay. Fingers crossed though

He is a totally different player to Gaff, there are also many poor mans Gaff’s out there as he is an A grade player. Kelly has shown this year he is not far from being A grade himself. Be nice to have both of them.

The Kelly deal is going to very hard to get any value out of it with Geelong asking for a early first rounder in an excellent draft. Reckon the Eagles would be better of pursuing Pickett in the draft and recruiting other youngsters and re-assess where Kelly's at next year. Don't want to break the bank for him.

I am with greatwhiteshark on this one.

Kelly has has a skill set that we need, as with his run and carry he busts games open.

Peops get to wound up about his age FFS he still has 100 - 130 games of football in him.
With the history of many first rounders not achieving that it’s a really simple moneyball decision for me he warrants a first rounder.

That said I cant see us landing him this trade period , but if he doesn’t sign an extension next year he is as good as gone from Geelong.

Now if we could land his best Mate Pickett this draft ( and that’s not out of the question) that would go along way to help Kelly nominate us as his trade destination.

Gaff and Lycett are almost certainly gone

Tim Kelly and Jordan Roughead shaping as their immediate replacements

Recruit a player we know can play or recruit an auskicker we don't know can play?
No brainer to go with Kelly.
Yet every club other than Hawthorn keep going with the auskickers. Just Dumb on every front.

Clubs often draft players because they think they can play at AFL level. I like Kelly and he would add a lot to West Coast, but investing in the future through the draft is critical particularly in a super draft.

And if we were in the bottom 8 of the comp I would agree with this. But we are not, we are in a premiership window and the job here is to put players into our best 22 that can help us achieve a premiership or even 2 of them.
Going to the draft now helps us in 3-5 years and only may help us then. All draft picks are unknowns. Drafting kids is the most over rated form of recruiting.
If you have to trade out a player or two to get one of those missing links then that is what you do. The draft is of zero help to our current premiership window unless you pick up a Chris Judd. Only the bottom clubs have any chance on finding that type of player.
Trade, Trade, trade.
I know we won't go down the correct path and that is also why we won't probably stay in our window very long.

The problem is we are not a destination club. Even though we are relatively successful no-one wants to come to Perth, fly every other week and shorten their career. Its always going to a problem when its a Vic centric comp. We have a pretty good record developing young interstate kids that stay.

I think Kelly is overrated (he is being carried) and won't lift the midfield. Get a 1st rounder for Gaff and develop a good young kid.
Overrated - I can agree

Being carried though? Not sure about that Champs - are you basing that on the fact that GAj, Danger, Duncan, Jelwood are running around with him?

Yeah I am. He has had a few good games and is a talented kid no doubt but he would be more exposed at the WCE. But if he wants to come to the WCE then sure, find a spot for him. Just my thoughts

There is some truth to that but there is also the other side of it that we are strong one year then fall off the next. If we had sustained success then things could be different. But when you draft you are recruiting players to be in your side in 3 years time. When in a window you recruit to play now and fill spots you feel that we could be better in. Hawthorn are the only club which does this. Is it a coincidence they have been so successful for the last 20 years?
Kelly or a player like him can help us now, a drafted young player is only a 30% chance of being able to help us in 3-5 years.

In my opinion this is a short minded view on how clubs should recruit in order to utilise success. Look at the Cats who try and land a big fish every year, and are failing miserably. West Coast should be looking at the best kids who can play great football for 10+ years rather than paying overs for Kelly. West Coast coaches are more than capable of developing kids into great players. Everynow and then a player comes along that is worth pursuing e.g. Yeo, Cripps, Redden, these guys didn't cost much were young and had big upside.

He has had a good first year. Not over rated though. He will finish higher in Geelongs B&F than Ablett and Duncan one would think, may even be top 5.
Do you think he will be more exposed with us because he is as good as anything we currently have? Shuey and Yeo will both be tagged and Kelly will run free with us also. Kelly is much better than Sheed.

It a bit of the glass half full scenario yes? Would rather just finish top 8 every year than win 2 flags in 3 years and then drop for a short period. Geelong recruited the wrong players. They didn't fill the holes they had.
I think we have holes which need filling, you try to trade to fill them. If you can't then fall back on the auskickers.

Ainsworth, Brayshaw, Mallen could all play AFL next year. Venables, Rioli could also play more midfield with Petruccle/Jarrad Cameron/Oallen/Waterman filling their roles. I think the club has a lot of talent ready to step up for next year already. If Kelly is attainable for a fair price then he is worth pursuing.

That I agree on and that is why more young kids are not needed. We have plenty now. Go to the trade.
Anyway we won't agree and thats cool. Great thing about the board is we can all have a view.
