Demetriou is right. ? "AFL Park" Where to Build the new stadium

And where you would build it?? On top of the Greensbourgh plaza shopping centre?? ?

Greensborough Plaza would just be naming rights sponsor, the actual stadium could be on the large vacant field adjacent to the Civic Drive roundabout (where Silvers Circus has been situated over the past month)

The minimum at the MCG is 45 home and away. They have locked away 87 games for the next 5-6 seasons.

So 176 games in a 22 round season, take 87 games for the Dome/MCG, take 66 games for home games played by the non-Vics, take 8 for Geelong and 4 for Hawthorn. But add to that a minimum of 5 games played at the Dome each pre-season.

Grand total of 16. + 8 games in a possible 24 round season. It's getting up there.

This is the most pointless thread ever.

Like discussing whether the 38th AFL club in 2095 should be in Shepparton, Alice Springs,Wagga Wagga or Oodnadatta.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Except for the Dogs. They were happy there, both as a home ground and financially from what I recall. The only problem they had with it was future growth being held back by the ground's size. We have exactly the same problem - can't fit 40k members in a 30k stadium.

The Hawks definitely got ripped off - we saw them coming. Fitzroy weren't so much ripped off as were too broke to pay for anything. There's a reason they had four home grounds in their last decade and a half.

It's no stretch. Go and look for yourself. No cricket and only a handful of VFL and TAC games to cut it up. It's a billiard table. I'm sure Kardinia Park is the same.

No, the AFL "mediated" Fitzroy's negotiations with Ian Collins in much the same way the Kanga's docklands deal has been done. The AFL guaranteed Carlton *spit* 22 games at Princes Park, and when Hawthorn pulled out of Princes Park the Roys had no bargaining power. They left Princes Park because the deal they were offered was paltry in comparison to what Footscray had offered them.

It's 42 at Etihad until 2015 (another 6 seasons). You also need to subtract a Bulldogs game (assuming they continue to sell a game to Darwin each year). That leaves you with 176, take 87 at Dome/MCG, 66 non-Victoria, 8 Geelong, 4 Hawthorn and 1 Bulldgos, leaving 10 games. And don't think that the Dome and MCG don't know this - they know the AFL are bluffing. Why should they change their agreement, it's not like the AFL (or the clubs) were unaware it was a long term agreement when they signed it.

But apparently that 42 games includes pre-season games as well. So at a conservative 5 games every year, that bumps it up to 15.

How about a really radical option

Baxter Stadium
- located near rapidly growing suburbs, like langwarrin, somerville, cranbourne (casey)
- train station which could be upgraded to 2 lines and Electrified
- right near the Westernport Highway/Monash and Frankston Bypass/Eastlink ect.
- Heaps of Hawthorn and St Kilda supporters.
- Fair few Collingwood and Richmond supporters.
- Reasonable amount of Melbourne supporters.
- Room for adequate parking facilities ect.

Why don't we build one in Kilmore while we're at it.

Stadiums way out in the 'burbs don't work nearly as well as those in the inner-city. Building one in the sticks like Baxter or Cranbourne (or Greensborough) is just a crazy idea.

I like the Mornington Peninsula. Country feel, beach, but just within reach of Melbourne if you need to get in.

Personally, would love it, but won't happen.

That link suggests it's 42 in the home and away season, the pre-season matches come into it after 2015. Either way, 5 games is hardly going to make the difference between getting a third stadium or not getting one.

AFL shot itself in the foot with this one.
Victoria doesn't need more than 2 grounds. AFL screwed up.

Upgrandes to AAMI are needed as well as help with Cararra, etc WS.

Out the back of Mornington makes lots of sense. Would be a huge tourism boost for the Peninsula, there is lots of free land, a new Freeway going in and it is easily accessable by both Melbournians and Gippsland. They could build a 25k seater with plenty of parking. Would be awesome to catch a game and make a mates weekend away out of it:thumbsu:

? what happens when Gold Coast and Western Sydney come in...that's 9 games per round with most weeks 5 games per round in Melbourne...Demons won't be playing home games in Brisbane and Bulldogs will not play in Canberra....Hawks may not be in Tassie....Therefore either MCG or Docklands will have 2 and 3 matches per weekend...for 24 continuous weeks....Definite opening for a 30,000 seat stadium...particularly when at least one of the minimal drawing non Victorian clubs...ie Freo/Port Adelaide/Gold Coast/Western Sydney will play in Melbourne each week. Demons v Western Sydney at the G won't be a good look.

There must be a contractural reason why the AFL aren't playing the MCG & Docklands off each other ie. "we'll play all our games at the MCG if you at Docklands don't give our clubs a better deal" & visa versa.

They have contractual arrangements with both grounds, as I have already said, they have to play 45 home and away matches at the MCG and 42 at Docklands. They have 10 matches a season to 'bargain' with. Why do you think neither stadium is interested in their bleating?

The demons will be western sydney. there won't be 9 games a week.

Touche'

Why do people keep suggesting outer eastern suburbs? north melbourne and the western bulldogs are two of the clubs pencilled in to play from this potential new stadium and both are a long way away from the east. Then again its probably a better suggestion than the showgrounds....where the old oval is now a small square with buildings around it....

Should have had 3 'suburban' stadiums optimised for footy, and the G for big games of course

One near waverley (Hawks saints and melbourne (now interested apparently))

One out west (mayhaps where docklands is now) (doggies, essendon)

One north somewhere (North, carlton)
