Demons Drug Crisis - Why not the same scrutiny as West Coast?

You've got to give it to degenerate goodie, he's somehow managed to run one of the best lists in the comp into the ground - culturally, physically and mentally. The Dees looked certain to be a premiership threat for years but never fired another shot. Impressive stuff.

Not that anyone expected their fall to be this big so soon, but premiership teams are always overrated by the media. More often than not, dynasties don’t happen. As good as they were in 2021, I don’t think many thought they were certain to win more flags.

For those old enough on this board to remember, the West Coast drug crisis of the mid 2000s was all that anyone spoke about when referring to that champion team, from Chad Fletcher “flat lining in Vegas”, to Cousins being found drunk outside the Convention Centre and many more incidents.

The Melbourne footy media subsequently engaged in a brutal war against the club, questioning their success among a number of other accusations implied.

On the back of Joel Smith being arrested now for drug trafficking - a far more serious crime than any of the above, why on earth isn’t the same level of scrutiny being launched against the Demons?

For starters, I’m not saying the moronic insinuations that the media laid against West Coast regarding stripping flags or anything to that extend should be applied whatsoever, but blind Freddy can see there’s a serious drug problem embedded in that club between the Smith story and a bunch of others over the past few years which I won’t name.

When are heads going to finally roll to fix the mess at that club?
I think a big part of this is the shifting of society standards, mostly from lefties who have a large acceptance and tolerance of illicit drug use and have become incredibly soft on demonizing its usage.

20 years ago, people were harsher on illicit drug usage, these days, socialist societies just shrug their shoulders about drug use.

I think this is where it stems from

Not necessarily more flags but they haven’t won a final since the grand final win. Again, credit to goodie.

We finished the 22 and 23 home and away seasons in Top 4.
Neither Geelong or Collingwood even made the finals the year after their last flags.

Next year will be interesting.

I think it’s a stretch blaming Goodie. It was clearly Basil’s fault for not letting him speak on the podium in 2021 after the GF. He might have said something really good.

I'm not sure what's gone on at Melbourne, but one thing with the Eagles drug problems was that they never let it impact on performance (to a material degree anyway).

Not sure what's going on with Clayton Oliver but his drop off is significant and can't be put down solely to injury.

Melbourne's major culture issues can't be fixed without a big clear out. Bite the bullet now and sack Goodwin so there's a fresh start next year. Trade out Oliver and Petracca. Hit the draft hard.

Depends on how the umpires are feeling.

If Kerr did that to a collingwood player in 2024, it would be likely a free kick to collingwood.

Only if it's at the MCG though

Ok, I'll pass your advice onto Roffey and co... stay tuned!

A friend of mine played U18s with a guy who was drafted to the Eagles during that 'era'. He remained close mates with him, and they would catch up whenever West Coast played in Melbourne.

A couple of stories he told were pretty outrageous.

Two that made me chuckle and that i always remember, were:

1) A senior player punching another player in the face at training, seemingly unprovoked. Dropped him. You'd laugh if I told you the names.

2) This kid was forced to skull (scoll?) a pot glass full of straight vodka by senior players not long after he arrived. Apparently they'd go out boozing regularly during the pre-season.

There were a few other ones from a different source who was a good friend of mine, that used to actually party with with a couple of the West Coast players (one in particular) that were even more outrageous.

This player smashed my mate in the face when they were sitting around chilling after a big night out because he jokingly ribbed him about his performance in the 06 GF. Biggest shiner I'd ever seen.

Still makes me laugh thinking about it.

Reports suggest Dan Houston "reconsidering" a planned move to the Dees

The difference? WCE were just better at it.

Running from booze buses, swims across the Swan River, mid-morning Northbridge arrests, gangland shootouts, dying on a Vegas casino gaming floor and resurrecting the next day.
All while playing footy at an amazing level, playing off in GFs and winning a flag. They were rock stars.

Dees have just had some off-season rumors swept under the carpet, blamed it on mental health issues and generally shit the bed on game day with a list that should be Top 4. They haven't done it particularly well.

And to be fair back in that era Social Media wasn't as big as it is now and not sure you could even take photos with your mobile back then

Tbf West Coast fell away significantly after 2007. The drug culture caught up with them eventually.
