Analysis Derek Hine leaves the Pies

Hine was in charge of list management when the troubles started.
He got dumped accordingly with the review late 2017.

He handed over to Ned Guy who
  • was told he was to sign Beams immediately (Ed had pushed that and facilitated mid-year, even against Buckley's wishes)
  • had 27 players to deal with at end 2018 because Hine hadn't managed to stagger contracts.
Ned didn't get everything right, but he did get handed a poison chalice.

Ed was the main problem in my opinion
  • pushed for Beams
  • pushed for extra years for Grundy
  • lost us Neil Balme when he brought in Gubby Allan on a captain call without consulting the Board
Gubby was the one who then overpaid for Wells and Mayne in his short window of destruction.

But I agree, I think Wright having his hand on the wheel for the list management, Hine for talent ID and Mcrae to nurture (with Leppitsch, Bolton etc) sets us up really well, even if we still have some list deficiencies at present. Culturally we are in a strong position to attract and retain players. We're in great shape.
Spot on! I dont understand why people blame everything on Ned and our lack of premierships on Hines recruiting. They are both exceptional at their roles.

If people want elite talls then we have trade for them and spend a fortune, in draft capital and coin, or tank and get a top five pick
Trying to pick elite to very good talls past thirty in the draft really happens these days
And if we play finals most of the time forget about the draft

Thank you Derek Hine for 21 years of service to the Collingwood Football Club. 👏👏👏 Go Pies.
What a phenomenal talent scout!! Not so good on list management and negotiations, but pound for pound he’s best in the business. After 21 years I can understand a need for change though…probably works both ways to be fair. Will be tough to replace.

I don't think this really shocks anyone. From the outside looking in, Leppa seemed to have come over the top of him, making some key calls, taking press conferences and the like. And personally, I've been keen for us to look elsewhere for a while, but only if we found someone better. We won't know whether we achieve that or not for a few years.

But that's a different conversation. Dekka has become synonymous with our club and it will be odd to go into the next draft without him. He's brought so many great players and people to Collingwood, that his mark is on the club forever. Thanks Dekka!

At least we might draft something other than small forwards or half back flankers. We might even draft someone over 195cm.

Do we even need a talent spotter when our policy is to trade every pick and enter the draft at pick 50?

He did a great job finding talent and role players later in the draft.

Who is the replacement? Not great losing Wright and Hine at the same time.

Is this another person leaving because of Leppa?

Overall I like Dereks body of work over the 21 years. At times of been critical on some of the types of players brought in but overall 2 flags and a near miss in 2018 he has built a significant legacy.

But having said that, I think a fresh sets of eyes across our recruitment and list management is not a bad thing..... as long as Hine doesnt end up at Carltank

Overall I just think the fetish for KPFs indicates an inability to fully appreciate the team structures and ball movement patterns that dominate todays game

NO team has relied on their KPF the way they did on Tredrea and Carey. The game has changed

Compare Richmond before and after Lynch - he improved them, but only a bit.

They are still important structurally. When the ball is locked in your backline and you can’t get it out other than long kicks for hope, all of a sudden having a good tall taking a mark is pretty important. Same in a final where game plans can go out the window and you just need someone to take a grab in a crowded forward line and kick a goal.

2023 is a good example, we take the mid/fwd in DeMattia instead of Logan Morris who goes a couple picks later.

Logan has been very fortunate to be 3rd tall in a good team, so he looks ok, don’t think he’ll be a dominant #1 tall forward but looks like he’ll be a solid player.

Considering our lack of young talent and lack of talls on our list he’d be very handy rather than another mid/fwd which is all we seem to recruit.

Could tell Draft Night when Leppa talked about who we picked instead of Hine like it use to do it

Taking 2 talls late in the draft is not a Hine move. I’d say there’s a chance he was overruled on who we picked so is moving on.

Kelly and Leppa rubbing a few people the wrong way. If I had to choose between having Kelly and Leppa or Wright and Hine at your club I’d rather Wright and Hine.

I am glad Leppa stayed.

Leppa and Fly are a good combo - both are driven to win.

Hine had a plumb job for a long time. If we split his tenure in half.

Was his first half or second half of his tenure better?

Reading between the lines he got sick of our philosophy of trading picks?

Either way he was a great asset for us and I’m very grateful for his time at the club.

Let’s hope the guys who are still there and any new ones in know what they’re doing.

Reading between the lines, I don't think Fly and Leppa thought that highly of his recruiting. At the very least Leppa believes it can be improved.
