A Cut Above
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 in my lifetime 😁
If you don't know who Sam Menegola is, don't be alarmed because you're not supposed to.
Sam was originally picked by Hawthorn in the Rookie draft back in 2011, here he is wearing the Hawk colors.
Unfortunately that's the only photo of Sam you'll find in a Hawk jumper, since despite spending a few years at Hawthorn he didn't actually manage to get a single game.
Sam was delisted, and picked up by the Dockers. Mostly because they saw he originally played for East Fremantle as a junior. Here's a photo of Sam in his Freo colors.
There's a few other photos of Sam in a Freo jumper floating around, but unfortunately the story of his 3 years at the Dockers was eerily similar and he couldn't manage a single game.
Sam then decided that maybe the AFL was a bit out of his league and he joined a new club, Subiaco in the WAFL. Here's a photo of him wearing their jumper.
Finally Sam had found his niche. In 4 years he has played 49 WAFL games and even played in a Premiership with Subiaco this year. Although Sam earned no individual awards in that time, he has often been heard to remark "participation is its own reward".
Despite being on record as saying he put aside any possibility of ever being drafted by a 3rd AFL club, tonight a miracle occurred and Sam was given another chance!
Chris Scott was flabbergasted when he was told an elite talent like Sam was spending his days toiling away in the WAFL with nary a single AFL game to his credit.
So he picked up the phone to Sam and a heated contract negotiation took place, during which Sam was heard to repeatedly yell the words "food and board is all I ask". Not long afterwards Scott declared his intention to draft Sam to Stephen Wells, who despite insisting on drafting a statutory declaration that he had no involvement in the decision is now said to have warmed to the idea.
Unfortunately Sam isn't important enough to have his own Wikipedia page yet, and no photo of him wearing a Geelong reserves jumper yet exists, although I could probably Photoshop one.
I think its great that Sam's finally been another chance to prove himself. They say success in life can be measured in many different ways, and sometimes we forget that professional football is not always about winning premierships.
Geelong have thrown a lifeline to a battler 17 other clubs rejected as not good enough. I have total faith that Sam can prove them wrong and one day make his AFL debut - because as he would say, sometimes "participation is its own reward!"
