I dont know if it is destruction or demotion...but even in the gloom of the 2000's, you could be rest assured that NMFC would dig deep and nail a team and not let them back in, or alternatively come from behind and have a showing.

The SS has taken a back seat at this club in the past few years and that ethos is eroding that mental edge that the Archers and Stevens built into this team as a legacy.

The only resolve in such loses is to think back to Collingwood in the mid 2000's who suffered similar heartbreaking loses, but only made them stronger as a team.

My good friend jozeph has been on this issue of the breaking of the SS, and I have come to the conclusion that the mental edge of toughness has been lost in this team with an attitude that can only be described as 'choking'.

Good teams have an ethos.

What does this team stand for as of tonight?

"The question will be asked and should be asked, 'Are we mentally tough enough?' And the answer to that at the moment is a resounding 'No'," Scott said.
He said the loss would have been unbelievable, had he not witnessed it himself.
"It was abysmal," Scott said.
"We're following a pattern of being able to put ourselves in winnable positions regularly and get five or six goals up and not be able continue to do what good sides do, which is put the foot to the throat of the opposition and start squeezing.
"Good sides do it and we don't so that pretty simply makes us not a good side at the moment."

Don't want to hear this shit from your gob Brad.

It is YOUR job to make them mentally though.

YOUR ****ING JOB.

Brad Scott is finished as coach of this club, might take a while but this is the final nail in his coffin, finished.

Boxing gloves and runners tomorrow morning. I want to know who the last players standing are.

This is what should be happening as well, new age, Gen Y shit kid gloves rubbish...ffs...

Actually, this era of team was just as frustrating as this current one.

Yep. The Pagan treatment.

The worst 6 and the best 6 in the VFL should have to literally fight for their spots.

I'd wager L. Delaney and L. Greenwood would be standing up at the end.

I don't even want silky football anymore. It's pansy, one-way, losing football - to me. I've seen St Kilda of 2004 get nowhere with it. Essendon under Knights got nowhere with it. I would put us in the same bracket, we will get nowhere with it. It's entertaining football for airheads who can't be bothered paying attention, and now even the players aren't paying attention when it counts.

I want Shinboner Spirit and grit - I want my team to be dour and shut matches down. Show some frigging heart and just shut it down. I hate watching North kick 8 goals and then let the other team kick 7 straight. It's rubbish football. I'd rather see a group of dour, blue collar leaders win 9 goals to 6, unattractively and convincingly.

Even when we play this football well, I know deep down inside that outside, in the actual weather and away from Etihad, we will be exposed. That's disgusting.

I don't know why Brad played so dour, yet oversees a side of such front-running, pansyish, wispy, "Head down in IPOD not listening to what you are saying"ish metrosexuals.

There needs to be a grey cloud of Shinboner Spirit hung back over Arden Street, the voices of Barassi and Pagan need to echo in the halls, and the laptop needs to be put on the curb with the hard rubbish.

Its funny how we never gave this much thought and a widespread view was that it was good for the club. Bit of research tonight shows we have won 2 of 11 games by under a goal with Brad as coach. 2 of 11.

Bring it back FFS. Im sorry but to think the trolls of this world were right is a disgrace.

I also read that we won 11 straight under a goal before that.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

Funny you should say that. For all the enjoyment of the Shinboner Spirit narrow wins we had against Collingwood in those years, they've won a flag since. We did it against the Saints, and they've since played in two GFs.

There was a time when unexpected wins against better quality teams defined our club. Those individual days were fun, but you can't live like that for seasons and decades. Surely we want to be one of the better quality teams other teams are trying to knock off. Other clubs didn't let the fact North had shaded them for effort in those games limit where they went afterwards, and nor can we.

Yeah, I understand the idea that the 'shinboner spirit' was a myth, but it was still a positive for the club. Theres no denying that it played a part - whether it be in the minds of our opponents or whateve - in the fact that the NMFC were always a pretty 'tough nut to crack'. As they say, "North Melbourne boys are hard to beat when they come out to play".

Sure we didnt always win and havent been a traditionally successful club. But if we were 5 goals down a 3/4 time, the other mob knew they had were up against it for another quarter against a pack of dogs that would try and overrun them.

Now we are downright terrified of losing and have become the hunted in this sort of mind game.
It is not a warrior mentality that is for sure.
Simply going out and giving 'the required effort', or 'not taking a backward step' or 'not leaving anything out on the field' is not something I associate with that performance, or many of the performances of late.

I just want to see some platitudes fulfilled at the moment, whether it be "playing for the jumper" or "do it with courage". I want to see some good old fashioned teeth gritting tenacity and fight!
That's what the Shinboner spirit was - It probably didnt win many games for us, but it saw us battle like men possessed when the chips were down in the eyes of our counterparts.

I would like to see some senior players tap into it, whether it is behind closed door or whatever.
Sport is all about that inspirational shit that lifts those around you, whether its real or not.

You don't even see Brad Scott get that close to the players, he is with his white board and computer letting the 4 or 5 other coaches do the work, it's any wonder the players get confused when running at goal. Too many bloody instructions from too many different coaches

My sixteen year old son was just old enough to see Stevo and Arch going around. He said they would do whatever it takes rather than capitulate. So true - we have become a pack of downhill skiers

We won 7 straight under a goal from 2007 to the end of 2009. We did not lose one with 2 draws in between. Before Brad Scott our last loss by under a kick was to Collingwood when Shannon hit the post.
Looks worse any way you analyse it.

I can understand the irrationality after a kick in the guts like that but no excuse 24 hours later

While it hurts id much rather us losing not being able to close out games than never being in the game. Granted the end result is the same, but its one small part we need to work on.

I maintain we need another skilled AFL ready midfielder, someone that can win their own pill but be damaging on the outside as well. Perhaps a few of the older heads in defense are being shown up a bit of late, but i thought the Crows were excellent by foot all the same.

Also these teams we've been beaten by have more mature midfield than ours, perhaps we're just a few percent off them in having the tanks required.... that can all change with one preseason. I only say this as we were over run towards the end of each quarter against the crows and over run in each of the 4 close games we've dropped. Each of these games we controlled it most of the day only to lose right at the line.

Still hurts today (but has been softened by a call from the club to say I won the Big Screen SMS comp yesterday for naming Phil Krakouer but I would give it back for Petrenko to have fallen over his feet yesterday and missed) but I think we need some more leaders in the back line - Scotty Thomson cant do it on his own every week. Narni is just going and must be under an injury cloud and McMahon and Firrito are making time. We need to trade for a BIG body defender if L Delaney is not up to it
