We were certainly shit when we came in (even in the VFA we'd been quite shit), but technically speaking we were only the worst team in the competition for 10 of those 35 years. 10 is still an impressive number of spoons to rack up before our first flag. Sadly we were bested by North with their 13. Its like both clubs were locked in a wooden spoon race for a while there.

So we're about a third the way through the H&A season now. Hawthorn still in the top 4. Yet somehow I have the feeling you won't consider this a "decent sample size".

Fortunately we have enough of a sample size to determine that Hawthorn's list is far superior to Essendon's. The difference is so big you could see it from space.

footy isn't what it was, we aren't what we were but it's a fact that there aren't many four quarter performances in footy these days

teams can't be kept down for that long without a lot of effort and most of the time it's not worth the effort, especially in H&A

Also worth pointing out it isn't some premiership or bust at the moment, we are proving that we are still competitive and we are not that far away. We 100% have holes in our list that still need to be fixed but we are far from what people were expecting us to be at the start of the season.

5-2 is good and all but we only look good in patches or quarters. We have battled a fair bit over the past 3 weeks. I guess winning when you aren't playing great is a good thing but still. Way off teams like Richmond.

Who exactly in the top eight do Hawthorn fear? Sydney, Adelaide and Geelong are three teams the Hawks can beat in a final. Richmond have never played the Hawks in a final ever. Don't even get me started on Western Sydney. A team who still haven't beaten Hawthorn yet away from home! You wouldn't want to play a full strength Hawthorn team in a final at the MCG.
