Parade boys will only come up against friars in the 2s as seniors out first week. Yarra to get 5-6 guns like Wildsmith back. Parade had state rep go off 3rd qtr and he was critical for parade getting back into game!

So he went off and suddenly Parade became good and cut the margin? Friars dominated whilst he was out there obviously...

But yeah Yarra will be hard to beat, whilst every other team is at full strength they are getting by missing most of their stars, be unbeatable in finals...

Any reason in particular for your confidence in yarra "unbeatable" yet have only defeated 1 top 4 side once, (yet to play parade the 2nd time). Not saying they aren't strong, but your confidence seems somewhat excessive?

It's not , it's about getting the 4 points to the right team.
I agree, that's the point I was making, and let's hope the right team does end up with the 4 points.
I know you have completely made your mind up about who that right team is and you can believe what you want, but until I hear there is some clear goal line vision then I can't be completely sure that the wrong team has the points at the moment. Sounds a lot like powerhouse think the ball crossed the line but st Leo's think it was touched.

Aha! If that is the case, rule 8.2.4(d) applies:
If the correct decision cannot be determined following consultation, the goal Umpire shall give the lesser score.
The fieldie has the power to overrule a club goalie as per 12.1.5(b).

What a mess. Glad I'm not involved or trying to sort it out :)

Nothing will change tonight, VAFA will award points to St Leo’s quickly as Powerhouse will most likely stay up! Has saved VAFA huge embarrassment!

Just imagine if they had both finished on same points in 9th position?

Friars were to slow to react and had players out they will learn. third times the charm.

Who do you think will win?
I guess we will find out more about Parade in the next two weeks when they play Uni High and Yarra Valley.
Uni High seem to have hit their straps at the right time of year.

Any news out of last nights St Leos/Powerhouse investigation?
Surely VAFA would have the balls to change result and award Powerhouse the points...St Leos definitely need the 4 points to stay in D2

Why is a result change such a sure thing, according to the laws posted yesterday the rules have been followed

Jezza, it has been alleged that St Leos goalie changed his mind after paying a goal, at that stage, goal awarded, game over to Powerhouse. And alleged that St Leos goalie spoke to field ump at half time and told him to watch powerhouse goalie "ïf it gets close" seems to be to pre warn umpire to keep an eye out.

And just allegations are exactly what they are.
This is a club volunteer not an actual ump we are talking about, it seems completely possible to me that this goalie has been given a massive match result decision to suddenly make and just completely panicked and was indecisive with the players from both teams in his face during those moments. I'd like this confirmed but heard the Powerhouse runner was there as well on the line around that pack for the kick and the moments after which could have played a part - probably another debate though regarding runner positioning, and again just another allegation floating around which we need to be careful with. I'd expect some of the actual VAFA goal umps I've seen to be just as indecisive in this kind of situation, let alone someone with who knows how much experience. Just an alternative take.
I've been thinking about it a bit and in that unfortunate situation when the goalie signals without the all clear I don't think it means anything without getting that all clear first from the fieldie. So no, not game over to Powerhouse at any stage according to my understanding of umpiring technicalities and the story.
Whatever the end result of this messy debacle let's hope all can move on and the rest of the season can go ahead smoother.

Also, how about if St Leo's finish two points clear of either Bulleen Temp or St John's?

Appeal lost. Just to clear something up is that the St Leo's goalie called it a goal and it was the umpire in the middle, not the controlling ump that changed the decision.
Ridiculous that an umpire in the middle of the ground can make a decision that has that bearing on a result.

Powerhouse stiff, thankfully look to be hitting some late season form and should avoid relegation anyway. Least it's done and dusted and we can move on.

Were you there? Can you provide any clarity re the runner on the goal line, since any time there's a runner within a few metres of the ball or blocking where a player may want to run it's paid a free kick. Or for instances after the siren I assume no score

I get you guys are frustrated but they are never going to change the result. You need to let it go and try to move on

Maybe the VAFA could supply goal umpires like every other league and we wouldn’t see situations like this.

For the weekend...
YV to beat Johns.
UHS to beat Parade - think this may be a bigger margin than their records suggest, UHS by 7-8 goals.
Melb high back on the winners list.
WF over PH comfortably.
BT to get the job done at home.

Anyone be over Parade ways to watch match of the year to day between parade and uni high. Thinking Uni high will beat parade this week but will be diff story in finals...

Every other league does not have 7 divisions of seniors & reserves, 5 divisions of 3rds, 6 divisions of U19s and 8 divisions of women’s.
Spare me. What does the size of the league have to do with it?

There is 4 million people in Melbourne I’m sure if they wanted to they could hire umpires. But it’s just easier getting local clubs already strained of volunteers to do it for free.

The size of the league is clearly backed up by an administration to suit. So regardless of 10 or 100 teams they should be able to source the nessary umpires to run it.

Do bigger companies stop offering basic service due to expansion?

There just isn't that many people who want to be umpires. I heard it might be something to do with all the crap they have to put up with?

I don't have any easy answers. Better minds than mine have grappled with the problem for years. $$$ isn't it - I've umpired with people who were quite upfront about having no interest in the game other than as a source of part time income. You don't want them.

You can attract people who want to maintain fitness for summer sports and put them on the boundary without hassle. Goal umpires can get away with lesser fitness although it is still an absolute requirement at the premier level; knowledge of the game, ability to concentrate, maintain composure and decisiveness under pressure are important. VAFA hasn't lowered the bar for entry and I don't think they should. Stacking the numbers with kids and nuffies just to supply umpires to games is not fair on the teams, spectators or the umpires themselves.

So what's your solution, watchdog?
