I was at Waverley watching a mate from Elsty play, did not see the incident that is under investigation so can't speak on it other than to say that all acts of violence are horrific and the sort of stuff alleged to have occurred must be stamped out at all costs. I can provide some context to what occurred during the game that may have led to the aftermath though.

Raiti #11 for hawthorn punched an Elsternwick player as he ran past him very late in the 3rd which led to one of the Elsternwick rucks remonstrating with Raiti and a Melee ensued. That was calmed down and both teams seemed to move back towards their huddles when the player and spectator involved started exchanging words- I wasn't close enough to the action to hear exactly what was said but Raiti then charged at the spectator (thankfully he was held back by several teammates and peace was restored).

Honestly aside from this one incident the rest of the game was played in a really good spirit and was higher quality than i expected, was cheering on Elsty and thought they almost had the game halfway through the last but Hawthorn were better for longer and deserved the W.

A real shame we are talking about an incident after the game and not the game itself.
Looks like Shem is on bigfooty.

There's no context that mitigates a cowards punch.

Interesting take.
It was a great game, Jones single handedly brought Elsternwick back into the game.
Unfortunately, a coward punch by a spectator after the game tends to over shadow the game itself.
What’s even more disappointing is you are trying to justify a player being coward punched for an onfield indiscretion. Should Jones and a few of his team mates have been coward punched as well considering they were on top of Raiti laying into him during the scuffle??
What’s even worse are reports that a certain Elsternwick reserves player was heard gloating after the incident - “talk shit, get hit.”
Embarrassing really.

Big congrats on the most embarrassing post on bigfooty this season - that's a hell of an effort considering. The fact that you would write this is the poorest reflection on you as a person there is.

There has never been, nor never will be a way to justify an incident like this. Be better.

P.S. my thoughts with JR and his family, no one deserves that let alone the poor children who witnessed that.

How does the VAFA handle this going forward? They have released a statement and obviously are not going to make any further comment while Vic Pol investigate.

How do they sanction Elsternwick? Boot them out of the finals? Conduct unbecoming against the league? - Certainly very difficult to impose a sanction against a supposed supporter who is registered as a player for another club in a different competition.

It was a blight on what was a very good game of football played in perfect conditions. Best of luck to the Hawks in the GF in 2 weeks time and best of luck in D2 in 2024.

Should be banned for life , but he's not an Elsternwick person so how does the club have an issue ?

They will have to argue that he's not associated with the club in anyway I'd imagine. I think I remember examples over the years of 'supporters' with no official link to a club misbehaving and the club being responsible for their behaviour/conduct.

He was obviously associated with Elsternwick in some way; but not sure how the club is responsible if he was just a supporter, mate of a mate or similar. Hopefully he gets de-registered, because it will only be a slap on the wrist through Vicpol

If an Elsternwick reserves player actually said “talk s**t, get hit.”, then there is a serious culture issue down there, and the committee needs to make a stand and kick the ressies player out of the club. in the least to keep their reputation in tact.

And gotta say, pretty piss-poor response on their FB page.

"'Elsternwick Amateur Football Club has been approached by a number of media outlets regarding an alleged incident that occurred off-field, after our senior mens’ semifinal yesterday at Waverley Oval, Malvern.
The EAFC committee can confirm that none of our club members or players were involved in the alleged incident.
As the matter is also the subject of an active police investigation, Elsternwick Amateur Football Club will not be commenting further on it."'

WTF do you want them to say , they can't say anymore than that

How about, we don't condone violence in any form and our thoughts are with the Hawthorn player and are relived he is ok.
Embarrassing statement.
The club has been spoken to by the VAFA and Vic Police and asked to make no comment.

Firstly I just want to say that I completely agree that the behaviour post-game is way out of hand. We cannot and should not ever have situations where people's health and safety are put at risk due to assaults. Whether at footy, work, or out socialising, we just can't have that take place.

But while we are talking about the sainthood of football players and clubs let's not ignore Hawthorn's behaviour.
One Elsternwick player was racially vilified multiple times during the reserves game which has been reported.
Harvey from Hawthorn has feinted to headbutt a female Elsternwick supporter while calling her a whore and Saint Raiti struck two players during the game (which have been caught on camera) and racially vilified the man at the center of the alleged assault multiple times.

So, they are Elsternwick supporters?? I thought they had nothing to do with the club.
The man was racially vilified....please....now, its getting really embarrassing....I was five metres away and not a word was said between the two...other than the "man" saying I'll get you after the game.
Poor form by Harvey if what you say is true and in the reserves game. I'm sure the club will come down hard on both if true and not make excuses for poor behaviour.
Post the footage.

You say Elsternwick are lying. Which parts of the above comment were a lie?
I can categorically state that the man at the centre of this wasn't racially vilified. Their interaction was for 10 seconds at the most - that's alot of vilification going on in 10 seconds.
Raiti striking two players is interesting as well. If he did, he got in return just as much as he gave.
The vision would be great to see.

Can we stop with the "we should never condone this behaviour and it should never have happened, but....' comments. There is no 'but'.

It was a cowards punch. There is no context that absolves it. A few Elsternwick supporters/players on here trying to soften the story by victim-blaming. I mean, i didn't think it could get any lower...

Elsternwick should be embarrassed if anyone on here making statements like the above is from their club.

I've heard from friends from both clubs who were near the 3qt time incident that they heard racial comments thrown towards Shem from Raiti.
The vision shows Raiti strike two players which is actually the reason for the melee at the end of the 3 quarter.

You haven't commented all year on anything. You've come in here hot throwing around "banned for life", and "Elsternwick should be embarrassed".
There are a few individuals in here who have grabbed their pitchforks out of their garage and tried to jump on the hot news of the weekend.

I have every right to say that the behaviour was shithouse. I also have every right to present facts that have been passed on to the league and Victoria Police.

“Facts”
You just posted that the club has been asked to make no comment but here you are posting about the clubs position.
Should I ask what you thought off #20 taking out Harvey off the ball which he lost two teeth in the incident? Or, is it all one way with you?

Am I representing the club Longmire?
Do I have a connection to Elsternwick? Yes. I have a good group of friends there, I also have a good bunch of friends at Hawthorn, Canterbury, Wattle Park.

If Harvey got hit so hard shouldn't he have had a concussion test? I don't remember old EJ coming off. That's an Aliir Aliir type failure from the Citz there. Maybe he could use it as an excuse as to why he's calling women whore's now?

Wowee...Perhaps its time the VAFA start filming every game, like pretty much every other local league. This could potentially stamp out some of this alleged poor behavior, and less he said/she said
