This constant redemption arc towards Essendon, has almost turned into a rite of passage, where they were victims of the doping saga and are now every scribes second team.

Great journalism if you ask me…

Build up the anticipation and then sell to millions of readers when the disaster and humiliation hits…

I was there in the stands for the full 120 min on Sunday night and at no point did I see anything that resembled the fabled * edge!!

Obviously only comes out for the lowly ranked teams.

Classic "flat track bullies" !! Embarrassing that they even coined the term
Might have needed to check Snicko to confirm if it is real or not, but we all know the answer….

This weird narrative surrounding Essendon and how well they did in this game, is beyond me. Jonathan Brown On The Couch was more impressed by Essendon.

As a stats lover, I still subscribe to the mantra, there are lies, damn lies and statistics and this is one of those occasions.

We controlled that game, seldom slipping into top gear IMO, and now Essendon are the English Cricket team after another moral victory.

Long live the edge.
+1

I was away travelling so missed the game live. I read stuff on this forum at half time, and then did listen a little to Triple M in the 3rd/4th qtr.

I totally got a different picture from that thinking we were simply lucky and holding on. But when i got home I watched the game and thought we controlled it totally. Our threat to blow the game open was always there throughout. And despite their inside 50s, they really werent as threatening as us in game.

I came away with the feeling that even if they had of kicked straight early we would have responded and hit them hard. They missed and we didn't have to reach into that level required. When asked, we did in the opening minute of the last qtr and flexed our real muscle.

At worst i might think as favourites we played within ourselves with facing that pressure of being favourites. But when challenged and with our boys having that chance to set themselves in the last, they crushed them in minutes. Our flex is right there and can be called upon.

I too love stats to draw a picture, albeit over an extended period of time. The Blues/Bombers stats are bullshit in the context of one weekend.

Southby was who came to mind for me too, you could make the argument for him to be considered our greatest ever. It's a very close call between him and SOS.
Always has been. Even for the full back of the century gong. One way or another, the job was going to a Carlton player :D

OMG just watched the replay, why oh why are the commentators always creaming their pants for that absolute disgrace of a drug cheating team?
The money the AFL slips them to support Essendon.

Is that Guelfi flopping? I watched the replay last night and I appalled by some of his antics to try for free kicks.
Talking about antics/cheating

Cincottas first goal where McGrath tried to call touched was also unsportsmanlike. You can see him tell his teammates it wasnt touched afterwards but he clearly tried to influence the goal umpires decision

Hate that shit

Can’t recall another game in the last 12 months when I was so relaxed throughout.

Good to see Austin belting out the song. Heart in the right place 😍

That was nice, but Vossy's proud Dad smile got me in the feels. He could barely contain it.

365 days ago we kicked 6.16 to lose to Essendon by 34 points and fell to 15th on the ladder - a full game inside the bottom 4

It is unfathomable how much our fortunes have reversed. I am taking a moment today to soak in not just the current form but how far things have swung. For contrast - round 14 last year vs Gold Coast I (for the first time ever) declined the opportunity to go because the crowd and vibe were so toxic, (and to be honest i was also pretty awful around the footy too...)

20 wins and 6 losses since; a preliminary final last year and currently second on the ladder with a fun draw on the way home.

Such a credit to Voss (and can you imagine that perspective 12 months ago today) buy he has become an absolute master. He's tuning this team like a DJ at the moment, subtly shifting players around and tinkering and eqch game there just seems to be this moment where it all 'drops' and we blow the opposition a way for 5-10 minutes.

Anyway, what an absolute wild ride the last 12 months have been. Hopefully it is the start of something - even a fun era of contention would be great, but so much credit to the club for turning this around so well.

I remember sitting there thinking the pre-game atmosphere was about as bad as I've seen. What little crowd was there was so quiet / disinterested.

My old man arrived at quarter time and I said "Same old stuff. We look like a team that thinks they are working hard."

In reality we were so reactionary. When the guys chose to run/chase it was a few steps too late to have any impact. In the contest they were sitting on their heals. Disposal was horrible. Then they kicked a couple of really easy goals in the 2nd and you could see the juices start flowing.

Was an amazing experience to see an entire club flick a switch in the space of 10 minutes of football. It felt season altering in real time.

Watching at the game and then replay(s), we controlled the game and tempo with composure and defensive pressure. Our defensive unit stood up superbly.

TDK, Elijah and Cincotta were excellent.

Brad Scott was gaslighting the footy-watching public with his post game comments.

They weren’t near it, despite their good play and efforts in the 3rdQ. We drove them to the outside and mostly denied them the central corridor. Even gained the clearance ascendency towards the back half of that 3rd Q. And absolutely controlled the play across the rest of the game. Could’ve been a much larger margin if not for the greasy conditions.

What a superb 3 weeks. Bring on the cats.

Oh, and I almost forgot. **** *.

Stop the Press: Teams that win Premierships have better skills than other teams and take advantage of the lesser skilled teams mistakes....

Hoyne bangs on about that all the time. It's a good stat but he gives it way too much air time. If you're killing it in this area but can't win a clearance / contest you're still going to be bottom 4. You need to have everything in order to be a valid premiership chance.

One of Voss's better games. bombres only hope was if their mids could run freely at our defense. Voss's structure meant that didn't happen for the whole game. It came at a cost with us conceding the territory battle but when you're 5 goals up for most of the game nobody cares. If they'd kicked a bit straighter our guys would have just kicked it up a gear and put a gap on them again. Noticeably fewer minutes Walsh (13% less than the week before), Gov and Harry.

Game review: a mediocre team versus a much better team. The better team won.

A bummer player was interviewed after losing to the GC and was asked what metric they value highest as a team and what their coaches reinforce the most and he said “time in possession “.

So they have obviously built their structures and game play to maximise this, which may have success against lower ranked teams because they control the ball more.

What we value is contest and pressure which doesn’t allow teams with the ball time and space to play controlled footy.

So whilst * may have had a slight margin in possession and therefore some territory ascendency they were never playing their free wheeling, zippy style.

Our team pressure and defensive structures wore them down and the game was played on our terms for most of the game.

Even with some of our major players being below their dominant best we beat them comfortably.

I don’t think their key metric stands up in finals footy.

''Curly'' Austin's son has blue blood running through his veins.... "Curly '' was the ultimate role player and the only person to keep Lea Matthews goaless[especially in a final at Waverly] whilst Mathews was in his pomp/prime... So naturally he knows all about recruiting determined well prepared role players because his dad was so role focused & matched up like a Cincotta every week ...Played on Mick Conlan too who was an athletic Beast and as fast as the wind butt stuck to his task and would totally minimise his output
Curly also kept the great Peter Hudson goalless - one of only two players to ever do so. Great team man.
