Do they come back from a knee reco ?

Licuria has had 2 reco's. Paul Williams was AA last year and had a reco which still gives him trouble. Daicos won a Copleand as a midfielder and kicked 90+ goals as a forward after Mathews told him footy had passed him by following a reco plus missing 2 years with stress fractures of his feet.

Francou going down again has caused a discussion. Which players have not only come back from a reconstruction but played as good or better than before it.

Joel Smith springs to mind for me.

Mathew Richardson. Kicked 91 goals following his reconstruction.

Paul Kelly was never the same after he done his knee. Sure he was still hard at it, but he was no longer in the top group of midfielders in the league. I still believe if he didn't do his knee in 98 we would of gone further in the finals and he would still be playing instead of retiring in 2002

Lee Walker had seven knee reconstructions. His knee's got so bad that eventually they gave him a knee transplant from a dead man (im not kidding.)

He was an inspirational person to have at your club.

Robert Harvey. Wouldn't matter if he had his legs lopped off, would still give you the same effort week in, week out. Champion.

If Steve Lawrence had gotten off the junk food & grog, so to maintain a footballers body, he would've been a success story after doing his knee twice.

It depends on the players mental approach & physical make-up. Some players will continue on at the same level, others fall by the wayside. Not a general question.

Ahh knees, at the Eagles, we've got quite closely acquainted with our friend the ACL.

If I recall correctly -

My mind blurs of the early days but since 1996 John Worsfold, Glen Jakovich, Brendon Fewster, Mitchell White, Chris Mainwaring, Trent Cummings, David Sierakowski, Michael Prior, Phil Read and Chad Morrison have all done knees - Read and Morrison 2, plus Prior and Siera were also on at least their second at the Eagles.
I'm not certain there aren't some I'm unfortunately forgetting either.

But yeah, do they come back ?

Well at the Eagles, no, not the majority.

Most of the players listed here, were not the players they were after the knee reco.

I firmly believe that Worsfold, White and Mainwaring never played up to their lofty standards post knee and while Glen Jakovich has turned back the clock occasionally, he hasn't truly recaptured the simply awesome form of 93,94,95 and 96 leading up to his knee.

Cummings, Sierakowski and Prior all pretty much ended their careers after a knee injury, barely playing again.
To be fair a 2nd knee at a new club proves you did manage to fight back a bit. Read and Morrison had 2 in a row without playing and have played limited football since coming back.
Read finds himself at a new club after being delisted so will have to win a place and Morrison, a gun youngster developing into quality player when injured, is out of the best 22 and pretty much fighting for his place on the list in '04 (training reports positive at this stage). Fewster, who needed a reco before debuting never really cemented his place at the Eagles and couldn't live up to his #3 draft pick expectations - eventually traded to the Dockers where he struggled with injury and form before being delisted/ retiring a couple of years ago, I think he's still running around in the WAFL though, playing well if I recall correctly.

That said, as others have stated some opposition clubs have had good luck with knee comebacks - Paul Salmon and Robert Harvey have probably impressed me the most with their respective comebacks.

He had 1 didn't he? He only came back after 18 months and never reinjured it again because his leg muscles, especially quads were bloody huge and gave him the support. Lucky lucky man he was.

He had to reinvent his game though. Instead of being a Greg Williams type ball magnet he became a close checking tagger, which required less pace and mobility.

Didnt he do one in his brownlow year as well as in '98? I can remember him up on the podium in crutches.

Nah, he just had a sore leg from getting so many kicks that year.

Correct! He did his knee for the first time in his Brownlow year and took to the stage on crutches. Consequently, he had the whole off-season to recover.

He did his knee a second time where he came back in record time. (Note: Schwarz also came back very quickly but did his knee almost immediately again)
