Do you think that Don's reluctance to develop and play a tagger is more surprising given that he was a tagger himself for much of his career?

The game has changed plenty since the 90's, sure but seems like he should also be uniquely qualified to help Sloaney effectively deal with a tag, although not seeing a lot of evidence of that.
I've wondered this myself. Maybe the fact he never wanted to be a tagger and was basically pushed into it plays a role?

The no tagger is Campo more than Don.

Hard to see what evidence there is to suggest Pyke did

Pretty fanciful imo
It's a bit of an exaggeration. The list was pretty good, and it isn't much of a leap to imagine a top 4 spot was up for grabs in 2016 had Walsh still been with us.

Most coaches take over a list performing poorly enough to get the last guy sacked, no?

Did we have a genuine tagger when we won flags infact most teams that have dominated haven't really worried too much about taggers like Geelong hawthorn

I'd argue the opposite, most teams need to have a negating player to win premierships.

Geelong probably being the exception because of how ridiculous their list was.

Yes you are right our midfield being mediocre probably needs a tagger to stop a quality mid

We just lack that one quality mid which got BOG against us when we played Carlton

Imagine a mid of Gibbs Sloane mcrouch bcrouch Greenwood Douglas CC Atkins with some youth of knight and Milera with Hampton waiting to have an opportunity

Gibbs would be our best mid if he was in our team ATM

I reckon Pyke would be as dark as against Roo ATM for not having the balls to get Gibbs

I don't think either of them have much time or the inclination for naval gazing and staring into the rear view mirror

Douglas wouldn't be getting a game in the midfield based on current form.

I think Pykey is tracking us well.

This is the most even year from recent memory in a long, long time.
Form is not a great barometer.
Table position is.

As for past years only 50% of all teams have won a premiership this millennium.
The failure isn't as extreme as some make it out.

This year we have another opportunity to challenge - which is a good thing as a supporter.
(Imagine supporting Richmond/Melbourne/Carlton etc)

Don't mind the Thompson call to be honest.
Hindsight is a wonderful ally.
It didn't cost us anything and answered unanswered questions.

Come finals I'd still prefer a 300-game clearance big hard body player vs the unknown.

The chain is only as strong as the weakest link.
If needed Thompson I'd trust.

Come finals every footy expert in the country will be telling us there is absolutely no replacement for experience

When the lobster is off the menu and you can only choose between the overcooked steak or the undercooked chicken then I'd rather eat my tough steak knowing what I'm gonna get versus rolling the dice with my undercooked chicken.

Go with the vego pasta!

I like what you say, but i don't think those questions were really unanswered when 90% of us on here already knew what was coming

I'm disappointed with the output produced by Thompson, in particular the 5 off FA, but the question may have been can he come in and perform a role for us.

No stats for blocking and general presence around the footy, allowing other playmakers more space.
The amount of intricate work and knowledge he would have around stoppages is underestimated .

In their eyes he still might be the Plan C, if required come finals, and they are just making sure all plans have life.
Plan B being a few kids.

The stats for blocking wouldn't make any difference. If the heat is on again like, the Sydney final last year in particular, Thompson will be standing 50m off the contest and looking around to see where the ball went .. blocking is marvellous, you still have to run to the next contest

You talking when the heat is in being finals?
