Injuries can be such a cruel thing

At his peak, ya could literally play him anywhere. Forward, back, on-ball, ruck, whatever.

Built like Bootsma but was one of the most courageous players I have ever seen.

Great in the air and so versatile as seen by swinging from half back to half forward throughout his career.

What a defensive unit we could put together with all of our greats, tough, brave, versatile and just plain taleneted.

Have watched this a number of times on youtube and Fitzy had the ball for about 15 seconds....

Lost the game but won the flag that year....:thumbsu:

Jimmy Buckley kicked a bomb of a goal late in the last, which should have won it for us, and it is still bouncing along the Eastern Freeway.

For the Dayle Garlett and Mitch Thorp fans out there...

Stephen Oliver
The highlight of his brief career was surely the Round 14 game in 1993 away to West Coast. An early injury in the game to 'Sticks' Kernahan provided Oliver with a rare chance to start out of the goalsquare, and he showed Carlton fans what the hype was all about. He dismantled the premier backman of the competition at the time, Glenn Jakovich, with a display which highlighted his aerial prowess and eye for goal. Two of his nine marks for the day were out and out 'screamers,' whilst he kicked two goals and provided assists for another two.

^^^^^^^

Close, but not a patch on this fella.

Saw this guy at his peak, there was nothing like him.

Gunna ramble about him once again, he was so good he silenced crowds, he'd slot a goal and people in the crowd would whisper did you see that???? as if they'd seen a magic trick.

Actually, Stig, did not have the pleasure of seeing him play (other than '79 GF, when I was barely out of nappies), but a close friend insists he was the Gaz of the day and probably some, able to achieve ridiculous feats with baulks, marks, goals etc when just about everyone else looked so clumsy. He now has an uncanny resemblance to Marlon Brando as he appeared in The Godfather :thumbsu:
