ok, so how about Dempster? Defineatly not too slow, takes a mark, can jump, big kick, can run (in Leo and Kennely style)....

If we had any brains at trade week, I would've got rid of that bloke who can't get a kick in a karate fight, and when he does, he kicks it to the opposition anyway..... what's his name again.....ahhh..thats right LRT.

And if Essendon fans are so upset with Bolton, well I would've swapped them over easily. And then you might just have a few more options in the backline instead of opposition forwards licking their lips everytime Lewy Bob-Tom is sent to them.

And maybe you wouldn't be trying to send a ruckman who plays much better forward than back anyway in to a full-back position?

Who was the defender who beat Jonathan Brown earlier in the year when we played against Brisbane?

He might have lost form in the second half of the season, but his first-half form was very, very good.

Unfortunately he's just so inconsistant and playing one or two good games a year doesn't cut it for me... and its probably not his fault, he just hasn't played enough junior footy or senior footy for that matter but he just doesn't have the footy smarts to get rid of the ball quickly and effectively enough. Good players, hence Barry, Kennelly create enough time for themselves, he's just looks always rushed in general play and then when he does take a mark he wants to hold the footy for an eternity and lets our men get manned up (because he's too indecisive)... I've seen kids in under 10's who don't frustrate me that much! I cringe every time he goes near it!

Have a look again at the first half of the season - his disposal ranged from good to very good, and his decision making was sound. I was amazed at how well he was kicking considering his struggles with kick-disposals in 2005 (mind you, I think LRT had better hand-disposal and ground skills in 2005 compared to 2006 - maybe bulking up has made him less agile on the ground?).

His last third of the season, in particular the finals, was where he played poorly - he seemed to lose confidence, and at the moment he's a player who needs confidence to take into each week, even if he never drops his head during a game, which is one of his major attributes.

I think were just going to have to agree to disagree, but I'd still have Bolton from Essendon in my team any day before LRT, and Bolton's not that flash either! So thats tells you my opinion of LRT if you hadn't worked it out. I could go on and on but anyone who needs personel tutoring and mentoring like he does, (eg. Silvagni 2005) doesn't have a long life span in football. If he can't do it by himself at this level then he never will.

No worries, we all have our favourite and non-favourite players :)

Back on topic, I'd wondered about Dempster as a FB before, but he doesn't seem to have the natural strength to wrestle while the ball is in the air, and his closing speed isn't impressive. Not impossible, but not likely any time soon. I wonder how Richards will go there as a fulltime FB? He's a reasonable mix of speed, agility, size and strength, and the few times he'd lined up in a goalsquare he doesn't seem to get beaten on a lead. It might also cover up his weakness, getting caught out by forwards that play behind and hold their position to take marks.

It wasn't only that. He didn't play in the Brisbane game because of a foot injury, they rested him. However it wasn't completely recovered. After the GF Roos clearly stated that LRT had been holding a foot injury but was doing the best he could.

If that was the case Nat, I'd be very dissapointed losing a Grand Final by a point and having our CHB in the side with a foot injury? Not saying its not true, just that its dissapointing if it is true.

mind you, even the teams with some of the best fullbacks and the best goalkickers in the comp, still struggled as teams, and thats the beauty (and beast) of the swans, when the whole team fires, they win almost every time. But then again, same could be said about 8 other teams.

Right.

"Lewie was under an injury cloud for a while before as he had a really bad foot and it certainly affected the way he was able to run, but to his credit he went up forward and took a couple of catches and kicked a goal, though I was pretty nervous as he was running in, to be honest." - Leo Barry

and

Right after the GF.

"Lewie struggled today there is no two ways about it, but he wasn't Robinson Crusoe," Roos said. "Some guys have good games, some guys have poor games. Lewie has been terrific, he has had a foot injury where he has struggled to train the last month and it has probably started to affect his form." - Paul Roos

Then why did he play???? I 'd never play a player in the most important game of the year if he was injured and hadn't trained properly for a month...and to lose by a point???

Players play with injury all the time. It happens every single game. It happened in last years GF aswell. Did you know Leo Barry had a broken cheekbone in lasts years GF? Leo also did his hammy in this years GF during the 3rd quarter. Did you want him to sit on the bench the rest of the game? These men are professional athletes, they push on. Unfortunately for LRT, it all just got too much for him. Also, don't think the Swans just went on with injury concerns. Daniel Kerr had broken his foot a few weeks earlier and he played and look at the game he played. At the end of the game i thought he deserved the Normsmith.

Too right... too right. Agree 110%

I was nervous too when he was running in to kick a goal.

i think the the bombers would be pretty happy about that .
stay off the weed:p

But LRT is not a key player for us like Leo Barry is, and he is not a key player like Kerr is for the weagles. Leo Barry and Daniel Kerr played with injuries because they were key players.

LRT is our tallest defender, IMO on GF day he was very 'key'.
