Wingard? One of our most talented players ever?
Yep ... But I am not interested in talent alone. It needs to be accompanied by the other attributes that make a champion - commitment & dedication. Something Wingard lacked bigtime.

But, this is something Bailey Smith has in spades! This is a lad who friggin disciplined himself after a bad game! ....

The endurance gun has the ability to run hard all game, with Smith’s tank a key strength in his attributes. Smith’s fixation to go the distance went to a new level early in the season caught out immediately running after playing a school football game for Xavier College. “I felt like I didn’t play my role for the team,” Smith said. “I’m a big believer in punishing myself if I do something wrong, which probably isn’t a good attitude for everyone to have, but I did eight 200m (sprints) at Xavier and got pulled up by (coaches) Matty Ball and Luke Ball. They said, ‘mate stop now it’s not good’. We just didn’t play our best football and I didn’t feel like I played my role well enough so I thought I needed to."

I wouldn't be surprised to see us pull a move on the night with Gold Coast for pick 3. We would have had a chat with them when we were organising the Hombsch trade.

Still think we took unders for him... ;)
I agree and I think we’ll use next years first rounder to try and make it happen.
GWS have pick 9 and 11 and maybe we’ll swap picks with them before offering 10 and 9 to GC.

Ok...we draft this lad.

I am very concerned with this from http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/2018-10-23/in-the-mix-draft-pick-5 :

Pick 5
All the talk will be on the local prospects, but versatile Victorian key position player Ben King would be a nice addition to Port Adelaide’s list. King was named best afield against North Melbourne's VFL side earlier this year as a centre-half back but then switched forward, when he was an All-Australian after a strong championships for Vic Metro.
Around the mark: Connor Rozee, Izak Rankine, Max King

Not just because Rankine should be the first discussed, but that it talks about King's versatility forward and back. Meaning, going by what coaches have done in the past, he will be allowed to stagnate at the back. Trengove played his best games for us when he was given free reign but was all too often put in one place to do one thing and I can see King suffer the same fate. We've already got big players available and coming through in Dixon, Lycett, Ryder, Frampton and Hayes. Ken just needs to play them in the right places. What we need are people in the midfield who hit targets. But all the skill in the world means squat unless there is a route to goal.
Someone who in all likelihood will be used as a defender is not a priority to replace what we've lost.

Will pick him at 10, if available. Not 5.

I'd wait till 15. If one or both haven't gone by 10 then I reckon they'd slide like Grundy did. I'm not holding out for Lukosius or Walsh but I would hope we can go mid, mid, tall. Of course what others do could impact on this.

Unless Lukosius or Matt King are available at our picks, I'd like us to secure a balance of the following with our three selections:
1. Highly productive inside-outside midfielder
2. Fast, clean forward with lots of x-factor and game-winning ability
3. Skillful, fast, hard running wingman

For me the best most likely combination would be:
Rankine + Caldwell + Hill

You could probably substitute Rozee for Rankine, Hateley for Caldwell and Butters or another for Hill quite easily.

If we were to take Smith at pick 5, then I think we need to adjust our selections at pick 10 and 15 to make sure we pick up players there who have pace/x-factor/forward craft/outside run.

Although I really like Smith, that attitude could also been viewed as a negative as his coaches certainly didnt believe the punishment was warranted. He could have an inflated sense of worth or responsibility?

Dont forget that Wingard was a highly respected junior who was known for his courageous acts.

Being indigenous should not be considered when assessing the likelyhood of failure or succeess. Surely the list of current AFL indigenous stars is evidence enough of the huge diversity of player types and personality.

PMBangers phantom draft has us taking Rankine, Stocker & Caldwell. I would take those 3 with those picks anyday - thoughts?

I can't see GC giving up their two picks. They MUST pick the best players, and they simply cannot turn down Lukosious and Rankine assuming Carlton don't pick Rankine. For us to get our hands on those picks, we'd have to give up more than it's worth.

Is Rankine worth Smith and King?

I'd like to see us go for Smith and King at 10.

6 picks 4 clubs
Nobody is going to give up there pick unless they can get the player they want with a later pick. I can’t see all 4 clubs wanting different players and if that’s the case the top 6 draft order will not change.

So after reading all the numpties reports on who should go here and who should go where we are all in unison that our club ****ed up? Hmmm.

Wish we drafted Jimmy T. Wished we drafted S Mayes......
Lots of calls those years on this board about bloody murder.
How about we let the professionals do their jobs.

Our opinions on a message board doesn't change how they do their jobs.

The club has however with the quality list it had, has been very poorly run over the last 4 years. So they deserve any criticism that goes their way.

Let's just not discuss anything ever because reasons.

That’s rewriting history a little. The club would 100% have drafted Toumpas if available and it’s well documented that we were about a day away from drafting Mayes.

The debate here in the lead up was Mayes vs Grundy. As it happens many on bigfooty out pointed the professionals with that one.

Pick a better example

Everyone was pretty much pro taking wines here.

Absolute rubbish, you have no clue. There was pretty much universal approval of drafting Wines. A few people were keen on Grundy, but I pretty much everyone was happy with Wines. There was some melts in 06, with Boak etc. that turned out to be wrong, but the collective wisdom of the BigFooty crew is about as accurate as the clubs recruiters. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong. No recruiter gets 100% of calls right.

Would be alright with that

Rankine is not comparable to Wingard. If we draft Rankine, he will be here long after the ****wits who effectively ended Chad Wingard's Port Adelaide career are gone.

Unless Lukosius or Matt King are available at our picks, I'd like us to secure a balance of the following with our three selections:

Apparently there is only one SA club interested in the SA boys, typical media.

Interesting to see Liam Stocker's name come up. Is highly rated by Twomey and Knightmare, Morrish Medallist, tough contested ball winner and clearance specialist, kicks well both feet. Has the maturity and determination to play from round 1.
