Draft Pick 1 & 2. Which combo?

You're not the first ;)
"Trengove is all class. I rate him higher than Ziebell. He actually reminds me a bit of a young Jimmy Bartel."

Good call. I've mentioned Hamish Hartlett before or a Trent Cotchin but from what I've seen, the kid is a better mark then those two.

James Bartel is a good call. But a better version;)

Just imagine a forward line of:

HF: Bate Watts Petterd
FF: Aussie Butcher Jurrah

..with a few others bobbying in and out it would be rather potent.
But then again you do need players to kick the ball rather than turn it over..If we do not get Butcher we need atleast another KPF as Miller and Newton are not up to it. Or is that what Bailey is doing with Martin?

From and outside perspective I think this is the way to go, you are already building a good group of mids with Jones, McLean, Sylvia, Morton, Grimes with Blease, Strauss to come in. With Moloney, Bruce and Green still providing decent service through the midfield i would add Scully to that group and you have a good mix of mids.

I think you should take the chance on Butcher whilst you can still pick up a KPF this early in the draft.

Agree. Even though we have Watts our forward line is still rubbish. And I dont think Jurrah can be the 2nd major target, he needs to have no pressure and be free and not have to deal with a major tag. So i think Butcher is the way to go. Imagine having a potential Nick Riewoldt and J. Brown in your forward line?

If you do take butcher guys like bate, jurrah and pettard get opponents more suited to there game style. Bodes well for your structure.

Exactly Butcher should provide structure and take the pressure of our other forwards. More Butcher love everyone.

Rohan will probably go top 10, and almost certainly not to us. Jetta should still be around for our second pick though, and is definitely one to consider.

Rohan looked exciting probably go round 6-10 though. If we did have a pick in that range he would be my choice.

Disagree. A lot depends on how good Butcher is, but as you say, it's a "risk". From what I've seen from Butcher I doubt he'll be a star.

Some supporters think that good mids are a dime a dozen, but star mids are as scarce as hen's teeth.

We haven't had one for 30 years.

Other supporters only see Jurrah as a third tall. I also disagree with this notion. He's slight but he plays like a classic full forward. The Bulldogs won't win a flag because they have no-one on their list that's even in the Watts and Jurrah mould. We can address the requirement of another tall down the track.

We need to start winning some games next year and the chance of two star mids is the right way to go for me.

I agree to the bold above. Jurrah is NOT a KPP and can't kick as many goals as the main KPP FF's - that is 100+ goals per season.

On the other hand, Butcher can. Butcher can be like Roughead and Franklin type who is capable of kicking 100+ goals per season.

We need Big Butcher to help us kicking bags of goals.

I swear I read somewhere that Butchers Dad played 250 games for West Coast. That means he is a father son pick? I read it earlier on in this thread. Or was it a different player? I think it is on page 3 of this thread.

I doubt west coast existed when his dad played his first game. Did you read the WA wrag? They think everyone plays for WCE.

He played in the bush.

Draft camp will decide it. Melbourne has been recruiting with a psychologist and profiling players.

Mr Lionshine ...you may be refering to this:

GIPPSLAND POWER star John Butcher played his first senior game for MAFFRA on Saturday. Widely tipped to be a certain first-round pick in this year’s AFL draft, the tall forward-ruckman impressed with his athleticism, hauling in a dozen marks and kicking a goal. Butcher wore jumper number 11, the same number his father Wayne, a triple best and fairest winner with Eagles wore in more than 250 games.

Maffra not WC.

Or ok thanks. Now I get it. Didn't see that part. Cheers.

How can you decide that a 18 yr old will only be a 60 goal a year player when they haven't even been drafted yet? some players shine in high pressure situations such as the AFL, not so much the little league. I just think we could do more with a power forward, we have the lead up forward in Watts now Butcher can top it off. I think we have a few players similar to Trengrove maybe not the same ability but similar, we have nothing close to a big dominating forward. Worth a punt i reckon, i can picture the same thing happening with Butcher that happened to Franklin... slipping to number 5/6 in the draft and then dominating.

It says 60 +...

My point is you cant decide anything yet, you can really decide that a 18 yr old will be a 100 goal a year player or an absolute spud. But anyway i Just think we should take what we need most.. not just the "best available" not sure bout you guys but i reckon we need Butcher a little bit more then Trengrove.

Draft for needs with the later picks, draft the best available with the first picks which means Scully and Trengove.

well personally I think last years draft we took what we needed most which was a KPF rather than the "best available" if that was so..we probably would of taken D.Rich or one of the other rising stars.

Well hopefully you guys will be nice and lose to Freo this week, that will give us pick 3 and one of Butcher or Trengrove. Doesnt seem to be much between them.

I think Butcher is the best availible.

Ur basing ur belief on theories that a tall forward who has shown very little will somehow become something he is not producing in U18 footy. All recruiters are saying that this is a midfielders draft. Therefore u take the best midfielders. We do not wanna see another Kepler Bradley emerge from a high draft pick.

If we have pick 3 I hope Melbourne will let Butcher slip to us. We need a good tall forward in our side and Butcher is the best tall prospect in the draft. He and scully were claimed to be the best talent at the first half of the year until Butcher started to have injury problems.

I would also be happy for Trengrove to slip to us, but it is harder to find good tall forwards then good midfielders.

I'm not a huge Butcher fan but very little is harsh. Have a look how many goals he has kicked over the last 2 seasons at TAC level. Yes he didn't bring his A game to the carnival but you could say Jack Watts had a good carnival but didn't do a hell of a lot besides that in his under 18 career.
