Draft Pick 1 & 2. Which combo?

Ur basing ur belief on theories that a tall forward who has shown very little will somehow become something he is not producing in U18 footy. All recruiters are saying that this is a midfielders draft. Therefore u take the best midfielders. We do not wanna see another Kepler Bradley emerge from a high draft pick.

And you are basing yours on here say and conjecture. Look at his under 18 stats tell me they are no good?

I think the stats show the he is producing.. 6 Contest marks in a game in no chump effort. While he had a bad carnival his carnival 2008 was outstanding. It has also been documented that he has been injured and was just getting over it.

Jared Rivers did not play U 18 champs due to injuries , yet he was picked on encouraging SANFL and his U16 Nationals. I just think people have written him off to early. And i don't see another opportunity to get a big key forward like him for a while.

Trengove over Butcher at this point for sure.

People keep mentioning potential risks with Butcher and Morabito, but I never hear about risks associated with Trengove. It seems that you know what youll get with Trengove - and I like the sound of it.

He plays a similar style to a few we already have (and probably alot better). So if we decide to take him we could look to trade a McLean or Jones who should fetch a decent pick or a player this year or next.

Dont take a risk with pick 2 in the draft. Take the best available now, and use the wealth of talent to trade for positional requirements if needed as we move up the ladder in a few years time.

Scully and butcher is starting to look very good to me... whatever Butcher did at this years carnival doesn't mean shit due to his injury and now getting back to full fitness is starting to really turn it on again for gippsland... The kid is massive and is guna be a star at afl level in a few years and it is guna be in a melbourne jumper... the last thing we need is another inside mid so why would we take trengrove? however its still between he and butcher

From an outsiders perspective.

I have watched a bit of the under 18's footy this year and IMO you cant go past Trengove.

This kid is something special.

A combination of him and the local kid Scully would be ideal for Melbourne.

This would make your midfield really damaging in years to come with the likes of Sylvia, McLean, Morton, Jones, Blease, Scully and Trengove rotating through.

In the years of 2002, 2004,2005-2006 I think what stopped us from really challenging for a premiership was we didn't have another Quality tall forward besides Neitz, we had Robbo but he isn't a dominating forward even though he did kick a bag on occasions... we all remember how frustrating it was when our players ever got the ball remotely close to the forward 50 they always looked for Neitz and often no one else, even when he was double teamed. It wouldn't hurt to have another option.

What stopped us from truly challanging was not having any superstars in our team. We had a a lot of good players but not elite players. Neitz was the closest we had to be honest. No brownlow medalists, no multiple all-Australians, no top tier players. No Judd, Cousins, Buckley, Riccuito, Hird, Reiwoldt etc etc etc. We simply have to often fallen down because we have not had the elite players to drag us over the line in big games.

Had nothing to do with our forward line. Back then we had Yze, Neitz, Ribbo, Davey, Green, Bruce etc which was a very dangerous forward line.

We need SUPERSTAR/S. For our brand, for premiership success and for the sanity of our long suffering supporter base

Butcher is a potential J.Brown would you class him as a superstar?

You may be right and if we draft him I hope you are. A superstar midfielder can be just as important, if not more. I am big on building teams through the spine, however I am really not convinced with Butcher.

I think the key problem with JB is perception. If he had a Championship like he did last year most people would just on. Instead he played a different role than last year and often found himself double teamed. His TAC form has been outstanding , he is clearly a class above those players.

I am not pushing for JB over JT on needs its just i think he will be more valuable in the long run,a better player if you will. He would compliment a forward line containing Addam and Watts, and would become an issue i would think lots of teams would struggle to match up on a forward line containing :

  • Watts : Very mobile and fast.
  • Jurrah: Mobile & Mercurial, pacy, awkwardly tall, huge leap
  • Bate: Clever, long kicking, mobile
  • Maric: Speedy , Great kicking, potentailly a mid fielder
  • Austin W
  • Then possibly Butcher: Think Kurt Tippet without the ruck duties.

How will your forward line structure look in 2 years time without Butcher? Will Watts be a one man focus as the only tall marking option down forward like Fevola and Richo have for a long period for their clubs.

Can Newton or Sylvia hold down CHF with Watts playing full forward?

Either way if you get 2 elite Midfielders to add to an engine room with Morton, McLean, Blease, Maloney, Strauss, Bennell, Jones and Jetta then you would be pretty happy.

You might even pick up a tall with pick #18 this draft but I've heard it's a midfielders draft. If a guy like Panos from SA slipped to the start of the 2nd round then you would be delighted. i certainly didn't expect Mckernan and Jackson trengrove to slide to the 2nd round last year.

Im torn on this, I voted Scully and Trengrove but seem to change my mind every 2nd day. If Blease and Straus come on then we should look at Butcher. A forward line of Watts, Butch and LJ could be awesome but so could a midfield of Scully, Trengrove, Mclean. Sylvia, Grimes, Blease etc...

Lets just say Its a good problem to have.

jurrah needs to be let loose! let him roam the forward line and do his magic. if WE dont no what hes going to do, either do the other team

in regard to trengrove, the club needs to talk to the kid and ask him what HE wants. if he wants to come to Victoria and play for a melbourne club, if he is able to commit to the club and seems like he wants to be apart of a team with such a young and exciting list - TAKE HIM.
if he want to stay at home or doesnt want to be apart of the MFC - DONT take him, take the vic kid who will play for the dees for 10 years(we cant have players wanting to go home after we hav invested money and time and games into them ie JUDD @ WC, S.thompson @ MFC)

Pick one is sealed with freo winning today so its justa wait to see if we have pick 2 also.

In saying that I don't see us winning against the Saints.
