Sylvia is an unrestricted free agent, Syl. He won't get traded when the option is there for him to just walk.

I'd probably expect a 30-40 pick compo for him, depending on how much coin he got. Our list is still going to be very young next year and assuming we don't get any mature players, someone has to get paid. Could be him.

Why would we want to give up Sylvia?

He's consistently had really good effort, he's 2nd at the club for tackles I think - his reputation is getting in the way of what he's actually producing.

He's a good AFL player.

Doubt Gillies will see an extension

Watts / Sylvia possible outs

Jetta possibly?

End of 2013 (source: Contracts thread in The Change Rooms)

Mitch Clisby (1st year rookie)
Tom Couch (2nd year rookie)
Aaron Davey
Troy Davis
Tom Gillies
Jack Fitzpatrick
Neville Jetta
James Magner (2nd year Rookie)
Nathan Stark (1st year rookie)
Colin Sylvia
Rory Taggert (Assumed, as a 2011 draftee)
Josh Tynan (Assumed, as a 2011 draftee)
Jack Watts

Joel Macdonald

From that;

- Gilles cut.
- Jetta probable.
- Davis, Couch, Stark possible.
- Fitz, Clisby re-sign.
- Magner, Sylvia, Watts, Taggert, Tynan who knows.

We say that, but Neeld only delisted the minimum remember?

We had 15 list changes last year if my memory serves me correctly! That's not minimum numbers, that's the most I can recall happening.

Bartram, Bate, Bennell, Cook, Green, Gysberts, Jurrah, Martin, Moloney, Morton, Petterd, Rivers, Lawrence, Sheahan, Williams.

Did I miss anyone?

Talking end of 2011 when Neeld was appointed, not 2012.

Clisby / Stark 1 more year on rookie list
Couch I'd say gone, but he's a rookie
Davis / Gillies I'd say would go
Fitzpatrick should get a deal
Jetta gone i'd say
Taggert / Tynan who knows
Magner I'd have to say gone - not getting a game in the worst side in decades
Sylvia / Watts, unknown

Might be a few players put up for trade or even perhaps paid out as part of the AFL Bail out (Dunn / Pedersen spring to mind)

Sellar / Nicholson possible candidates too

The changes at end 2011 were minimal in the knowledge that Free Agency was coming in the following year I would have thought... That and Neeld wanted to have a look at what he had going.

We may only have 5-6 delisted (including the retirements) but I reckon there will be plenty more on the trade table.

Problem is finding homes for those they wish to trade

In all likelihood.

Don't mean to intrude but was talking to one of my best mates about where you guys stand in relation to Trading and drafting in this years coming trade period. I'm of the belief that you guys aren't actually far away from being a very competitive unit, as long as you get the right coach and add a little bit of quality at this years draft/trade table. Evidently I think you guys will have a very solid clean out but you have a chance to add some serious quality through some trading. Here is my thoughts on what you guys should do to get the most out of this years draft/trading period.

Trade Watts to Freo or Carlton for 1st round pick. Watts has a lot of potential but I really think it's best if you guys part company. I don't think he offers that much to you guys especially with Hogan and Clark coming back into the side next year. Watts obviously doesn't live and breathe the Melbourne football club. From there I would on-trade that first round pick (12-16) to GWS for Taylor Adams.

Keep 1st round and 2nd round pick. This draft has very good depth for midfielders and I really think you will be able to get some ready to go quality with both those picks. With your first it would be hard to go past Aish or Scharenberg. While Scharenberg might not be a pure midfielder, he could easily fill a role as an outside mid on a wing. Aish, might be a bit skinny but his body is ready to go. Has silky skills and oozes leadership. He would be my pick.

2nd round pick, I'd look to pick up on of the sliders in this draft. There is going to be a lot of quality at pick 20. I'm tipping that one of the SA big bodied mids will still be there. Someone like Dunstan or Dumont. Both of whom are battering rams. Billy Hartung or Dayle Garlett would also be good options here. I would probably not be so keen on getting Garlett considering that you don't have many old heads in your side to keep him in check. Its a bit too big of a risk.

With 3 picks your midfield already bats considerably deeper.

With your later picks, I would go mature from the state leagues much like you did last year. I think if you could find another Terlich/Jones it would also help you out considerably. Chris Cain or reigning liston medal winner Ben Ross would be an excellent additions across half forward and through the midfield. If you were looking for a bit of speed from half back, Scott Sherlock from Werribee or Josh Glenn from the SANFL would be ready to go from day dot. Matt Suckling would also be an excellent rookie list option. He is an inside mid with excellent skills and leadership.

So just say you get: Aish, Dumont and Adams and add Cain and Ross.

I think I could see your best 22 looking something like this next year, which I think would be very competitive.

B:Garland, Frawley, Terlich
HB: Grimes, McDonald, Clisby
C: Aish, N.Jones, Toumpas
HF: Cain, Dawes, Sylvia
F: Clark, Hogan, Howe
R:Gawn, Adams, Trengove
Int: Dumont, M.Jones, Blease/Kent
Sub: Ross

Add a couple of good rookie list picks and or some good trading for fringe players younger than 24 I think you would be considerably more competitive next year. While still having good key position depth waiting in the two's in case of injury (Fitzy, Davis and Pedersen)

Good post, although you left Viney out. It still leaves us with about 5 kids in the midfield too, which wouldn't bother me as long as they're good and will get better.

We also need a couple of small forwards. Don't know much about Cain but the other blokes you have in the forward half are all lead up or target players. Bit much to ask the kiddies without developed tanks to kick it to them and crumb off them at the same time?

Ah. I knew i was missing one of the young guns.

The idea behind having no traditional crumbers is because of the young kids in the midfield. Essentially having Cain/Sylvia there for additional midfield depth.

There will be a lot of crumbing forwards that will be available in that 3rd to 4th round.

Guys like Jay Kennedy Harris, Jarman Impey or Dwayne Wilson would be a perfect fit.

Garlett would be a good pick up but as I said He is a bit of a risk, and I feel that would be increased with the lack of seniors players at the club. Plus he doesn't play as a pure crumbing forward. More a midfielder than rests forward.

Tinpungwuti, Willy Rioli would also be available as rookie/late spec picks.

How far away is Dom Barry from playing at AFL level?

Playing at AFL level or playing for us?

Not really sure. Very skinny, might be able to do a job on the wing but I don't think he's going to crumb packs too well.

Great post I reckon you are on the money with the dees list.
Would take a risk with gartlett and keep flash Davey on board as an assistant coach and mentor him. Cain is another top pick has pace and class would rate him ahead of Sam Dwyer as a player. How mark neeld did not see him as part of his Moneyball project where only jones and terlich were of any sucess with Peterson just a pass. Trade watts for a first round pick and be aggressive looking for gun mid to take pressure off jones. Sylvia has shown plenty of grunt second half of the year so must be kept. Would look at Howard from dogs to play rebounding defender try turn him into a malceski. There are core players to base a team around for next year thru frawley, garland, jones, Dawes, Clark, hogan, gawn, Howe, viney and t McDonald

Seen him juniors play a role across half forward although not really a traditional crumber! was just wondering where he was at!

Has had some good performances at Casey from the club reports. Ball use is a highlight. As was mentioned though he is still a rake and would struggle physically at AFL level; especially in our side where he wouldn't get much protection from his mates.
