I'm pretty sure they could do that with picks 2 and 10.

Is this Boyd such an amazing player worth all this kerfuffle? Is he Wayne Carey reborn? Jeremy Cameron seems the bees knees to me so this guy would want to be in the same ball park.

As with anything in our capitalist culture it's not about what anything is really worth, but rather what his perceived worth is ;) The media has built up Tom Boyd enormously, and as the only really proficient tall forward at the elite end of the draft pool this year, coupled with power forwards coming back into fashion, he's the desire of every club that needs a big target up forward.

I guess the trade value of pick 2 is less than pick 1 in this case because there's no certainty of getting Boyd, since he could be taken by whomever has the first pick. A club like the Bulldogs wouldn't be satisfied with trading for pick 2 only to get Aish (even if he's better than Boyd) if it's a tall forward that they need.

If Watts wants to go to Carlton, and manage to get their pick 10 do we think that's enough to satisfy GWS in terms of securing Taylor Adams? Surely we will be able to table the biggest offer in terms of salary which should get his attention.

If we got him for 10 I would hope we would keep 2 to pick up Aish and another mid at 20. Surely that's a pretty good scenario in to build our midfield over the next few years.

Yeah, 10 for Adams is probably overs - GWS should chuck their 2nd rounder in.

That said, I'd offer it if it was the only way we'd get him

Pick 10 for Adams + Pick 18? Nup. They wouldn't just "chuck in" a second round pick like that. They could use pick 18 to trade for a decent senior player at another club. Adelaide would LOVE that pick, Essendon too if they get their picks taken away.

AFAIK they have a pick around 10/11 already too, from a trade that involved from compensation picks.

Pick 10 > Pick 18.

They can get a better senior player for pick 10 then pick 18, Adams can walk to the PSD and get to us.

Adams isn't worth a top 10 pick IMO.

Josh Caddy was a pick #7 - Geelong gave up what worked out to be pick 14 (IIRC).

Will be similar to the watts scenario, demand for him...if we get anything back it will be a 3rd rounder I would imagine.

Stop.

Adams is not going to get to us via the PSD. I ranted about this last week - the chance that he wants to come to the most pathetic club ever at the absolute exclusion of everyone else is stupidly small. We would have to offer Scully-like dollars, and he would have to be the dumbest player ever.

Just get used to the idea that if we want Adams, and indeed any player with his head screwed on, we will have to pay overs. GWS will have every club in Melbourne coming at them with a great deal, and we won't land him unless we offer the best deal by far. That would be pick 10... How would we have that pick anyway though?

If we can somehow work out a deal with Carlton that includes Watts, that's the only way we get it IMO. Potential 3 way deal with Carlton, GWS and us?

GWS already have pick 1 and a compensation pick (pick 10ish) as it stands, why would they want another pick?

we will want 4 min picks 3 first round 1 2nd an a good manture player psd, an will stop early in the draft 3rd round,
adams has showed more then caddy did, caddy had wraps on him from under 18's where as adams has backed it up afl wise, watts for adams easy as that :)

Hypothetically watts can't get to Carlton. Enters the draft what pick does he go? Btw I think yarran is better than nothing, who are we demand so much. He can just leave

If he ends up in the PSD he goes to GWS, assuming he has no interest in going there I would think he will work with us to get him to the club of his choice.

When we find out what we get for Watts you guys will wish it was Yarran. We won't get shit, some late round pick likely. Yarran is a game changer, yeah he has been very average lately. I remember him breaking games open off half back and I was just in awe. He has given more and performed better more consistently than Watts. If I was Carlton I wouldn't give up Yarran for Watts.

I think people get a bit too carried away with a few running bounces a game and a cute kick or two. Yarran has put in some pure pea-hearted efforts this year. For Carlton. Can you imagine how well he'd be doing for a team that regularly loses by 10 goals? Not exactly the type to fight tooth and nail to drag us up the ladder. Maybe he's not that type of player and we could definitely use some pace and skill, but we're basically gambling that somehow Malthouse has mortally offended him or destroyed his confidence and that he'd do a decent job for us instead of churning out the insipid pissweak efforts week to week that he's thrown up at Carlton this year. I can see him getting delisted when his contract is up.

I think youre underestimating the value in an extra $100k per year over three years for a young footballer.

I think we are unlikely to get him in the PSD, however I would be shocked if we're not telling him we can pay him more than any other club, and we'll top it up even further if he nominates for the PSD.

Oh definitely, we should try that, because I don't imagine we could be out-gunned on the salary front by anyone if we wanted him... However we will need to pay overs to lure him here, because as I say we are a rabble.

I like it but the problem is GWS have a pick before us, if I were them and couldn't get a trade I would draft him back

Could do, but he could nominate whatever salary we'd offer him and I'm presuming that'd be more than GWS would want to pay given they have to work out how to keep a hold of all the other gun kiddies. If a player really wanted to leave a club and let them know, reckon they'd re-draft him? Better to move on I'd have thought.

Haha, fair enough mate - I will add that a respected senior coach could well help attract good players.

He's not 'that' good though.

He'll be a good tough nut midfielder, so if he likes the financial offer we give him and GWS don't want to do a deal he can go into the draft with a price tag or the PSD.

If he doesn't want to do that we can find someone else, and I'm not suggesting it's a lock to happen or even likely.

I think that if we don't get a good deal with GWS we say 'walk to the PSD or we turn our attention elsewhere' - we could draft an Adams type player with any pick in the top 30 (although... we are Melbourne)

No way GWS would redraft a player that didn't want to stay. They have to cut their list back so it aligns with the other 17 clubs this year. They are looking for people to cut. The rookie draft will be interesting with this in mind.

Guys great discussion and thanks BETON5 for getting things under way.

The 2013 Megathread is now open so we'll wind this up and direct everyone over there.

Cheers,

Mods.
