Most drafts will have as a maximum three or four gems. Possibly 10 to 15 servicable players and the rest won't make it. How many of those decent players will Richmond land? And how many years of being uncompetitive will Richmond supporters put up with being uncompetitive?
The 2001 superdraft had 12 blokes who went on to be top line players, with 4 of them amongst the very best players of their era.

Cats helped to set up their era by getting 4 of the top liners.

This draft doesn't have those likely to be amongst the best of their era but it could have a lot who become top line players, but they'll probably be spread out through the draft.

Tigers are in a strong position to get a few of those who have really good careers and should also add a heap of value into next draft. If they're bullish about this crop, they may switch to trade next year to avoid a long time as cellar dwellers and they should be stacked with trade chips.

They need a lot to go right, but definite potential to reload with a really strong base to build around for the next decade.

I like it as a strategy. They're not going to be Ninthmond again.

Doubt pick 15 is another yrs pick 8, maybe pick 12
The point you are also missing is this yrs pick 16 is most yr's pick 20 and so is this years Pick 35.
So pick 15 is another years pick 12, but the “point they are missing” is this that years pick 16 is most years pick 20?

So 15 is equivalent to most years 12 and 16 to 20? An 8 spot drop from 15 to 16?

And you’re going around laughing at other peoples posts!

Teams will pay up only for a true slider. Who do you think that would be?
Weddle wasn’t a “true slider”. Cal Twomey had him at 22 in his October Phantom and then 15 a few days before the draft. So he went right around where he was expected to go and yet Hawthorn paid a significant price to move up 10 or so spots.

And as sr36 pointed out, Holmes wasn’t either.

So you’re just talking more made-up nonsense, like what you reckon picks 15 and 16 are worth.

Clubs will pay up if a guy they rate really highly is on the board at a pick they think they can afford. Period.

Yep, its why I don't want us to trade up, keep 8 picks use 7, maybe trade one out for next year if another team is desperate enough.

Thats 7 bites at the top 25 cherry, if we can get maybe 3 long term prospects then it goes a long way to develop our list.

I have it on very good authority that if Tauru is available for Melbourne's first pick, he will be a Demon. They are looking at a possible Mcdonald replacement as this will likely he his last year. They are quietly hoping North trade out of #2 as there is no mail about anyone trading up to take Tauru at this stage.
Not what I’ve heard at all.
Dees should take him. Plenty of other clubs be wrapt with that.

I think you'll trade 2 of them. Simply because pick 24 - the first of the second night seems to get good offers, so you'll want to sell it, but you won't want to be in a position where it's a forced sale due to having already taken 7 picks.

Agree, good chance a team like Essendon comes offering a F1 once the Kako bid happens, especially considering they want to get back into the 1st round. That will then leave pick 24 on the table for day 2 if another side really wants it.

This has nothing to do with your original point.

Given Blues fans have put up with 3 or 4, 5 year rebuilds and false dawns, I reckon we have time on our side before we need to worry about our supporters.

Jason Taylor spoke at a function over the last week or so and he stated they would be taking midfielders in the draft.

They don't have to wait until a Kako bid - better for if they don't. I think they'll be offering it from the start and it'll be better for you if the Kako bid comes later. If Kako stays on the board long enough, they'll be able to add a second round pick or two to the offer - and at some point you'll take the offer.

I like the way you think. lol

There’s no need for them to be offering it from the start because no club is giving them a pick inside probably 13 for it, whereas a bid for Kako could come inside that, so what would they achieve by doing that?

They’d burn the joint down if they got say 15 for the F1 and had to use it to match the Kayo bid, when they could have just waited till 15 came around and done it then.

Lions don't have enough points and so not likely to move picks for futures without getting picks back in this draft for points. Will depend on where the bid comes from. I hope it is pick 1 as other clubs need to make them pay for getting this much quality after winning flag. I doubt Tigers have a handshake deal as they had paid overs but who knows.

Bombers though have more than enough points for bid on pick 8 onwards. So both their top 2 picks ( 28 & 31) can be moved out for futures. Post bid they can trade their futures to get back.

Hawks would like to get 28 for Blues F2 prior to Kako bid and then trade our pick 33 for their F2.
Saints have pick 32 and they too may try something similar

Maybe Cats will trade their F1 for both 28 & 31 & then give up their 45 for Bombers F3

Or Hawks trade their Blues F1 for 28 & 31 and then bundle 28,31,33 for Eagles pick 12 or Freo's pick 14 or any teens Pick North manage to snag from Tigers for pick 2.

So many possibilities
We have enough points.

We’re taking 6 picks to the draft.

The first 4 picks will match a bid on Ashcroft, plus generate a residual pick in the late 50’s or 60’ish.

Our 5th and 6th picks will move up the draft order about 5 spots each, after the Ashcroft, Kako and Lombard bids, which will see those picks increase in points value.

And that residual late 50’s pick moves up 3 spots and increases in points as well.

That should give us enough points to match a bid on Marshall at 20.

Richmond picked up four premiership players in the 2014 rookie draft alone. Not saying we will have as high a strike rate here, but suggest you are being too cynical.

(Note, the rookie draft at the end of 2014, confusingly termed the 2015 rookie draft)

Technically correct if they take two midfielders across all their picks, nothing comment otherwise
Not really.
Other then Taura maybe there are no other talls that are top 10 worthy propsects. Please don't mention Armstrong. Couldn't find a more overrated propsect.

Even Taura for all his athletic ability is a shocking kick of the footy.

Oh forgot you only have 5 and 9. Armstrong?
Tauru gives me bigfooty hype vibes. Wouldn't be shocked to see him outside the top 10, maybe even top 15

Wonder if Adelaide and North could trade their first picks.

2 + F2 + F3 for 4 + F1 + F3

I have Adelaide climbing more than North next year. Crows' ceiling is probably 8th, and North's is 13th. If both teams perform to that level, trade becomes:

2 + F2 (24) + F3 (42) for 4 + F1 (11) + F3 (47)

Adelaide get who they want ahead of Carlton, North gets ahead of Melbourne without it being as big of a reach for Tauru at 4, and gets a future 1st (Can be used to trade into the draft later on)
I would personally burn down the footbridge if Adelaide did that.

When I say from the start I mean for each upcoming pick.

They'll be offering more than just a F1

Essendon currently hold these picks: 28, 31, 40, 46, 53, 54, 65. The later ones will become lower numbers with more points attached after Ashcroft is matched. If a bid comes before about 7 they'll have to match but will be left with some OK picks at the end.

But once it gets to pick 6 or 7 without a bid they'll be in a position to offer F1, F2, 28 and 31 and they can't take 28 and 31 to the draft so it's trade into the future or offer them as part of a trade for a good pick in this draft. If they're willing to pay that, I think Richmond will do it at 10 or 11. Saints would consider it at 8.
