draft top 10 - who do they remind you of

At picks 5 & 7, when they should have worked out all possible situations the Hawks were unsure what they wanted. It was clear the were banking of Richmond getting Franklin thus leaving them Tambling @ 5.

At 7 there was another long, long wait.

I would have loved Ryan Griffin at Richmond. By all accounts he will be a star. However, I wouldnt take him over Deledio and am happy with Tambling.

Groan

At 5 there was a gap while the Hawk coaching panel presumably confirmed the choice of Franlin ahead of Meesen, and this gap was extenuated by Buckenara confusing the number of Lance Franklin with the other Franklin.

At 7, there was another pause (not unusual at drafts, when clubs think through unexpected possibilities) while the club ran through a final consultation on the merits of a number of midfield options before deciding Lewis was the most appropriate for their needs.

You wouldn't take Griffen over Deledio, and that's fair enough, although the fact that other football experts (particularly those from SA & WA) suggested they'd be more than willing to nail Griffen had they top pick only supports my assertion that draft order numbers are largely arbitrary affairs.

Thus Franklin is not clearly a standout player then, according to the Hawks staff at least...

I have never denied ohterwise.

Once again Griffin looks to be a star.

Presumably because taking 3 talls with the first 3 picks would be overkill, particularly when questions were rife about the future of ruck play and the club's need for an extra midfielder was more pressing than for a young ruck player.

Thus, you must acknowledge that draft number ordering is an arbitrary, rather than a concrete practice.

Seriously whats your deal? Franklin not a standout player? He was rated as talented as anyone in the draft and is dominating at hawthorn training already. The reports on him and jordan lewis have been most impressive from everyone concerned down there. But still you have to find every negative aspect you can think of and put down those picks? The top 5 picks were all labelled to be guns by everyone concerned... that's a fact. Franklin was rated as a number one pick for a lot of the year... that's a fact. So i think bentleigh he clearly is one of the standout players from the draft.

Sorry, I don't know where you've got this one from, but I don't buy it for a second. If they were honestly tossing between Franklin & Meeson at 5 then they would have taken the other one at 7.
I really don't have a problem with most of what you're saying, I think more of Bentleighs comments are contentious than yours. HOWEVER, its quite interesting to see the change in attitudes of the Hawthorn supporters to justify everything that happened on draft day. You'd almost think everything went exactly how Hawthorn wanted it to from reading the comments on here.

No knob.

My statment was if Hawthorn was "tossing up" between Franklin & Messen & 5 then surly Franklin was not a stadout player.

Franklin, Meeson & Williams were all in the mix for Hawthorn's pick 5, but thankfully they opted for the smartest option. Your logic about automatically taking a losing tall at 7 doesn't follow, however, given that the club's focus had switched from talls to smalls after the opening two picks. They had to use the third pick on a midfielder having taken two talls, given the lack of depth apparent in the current Hawk midfield rotation. It would be fair to argue that the Hawk heirarchy (for some hard to fathom reasom) were more sold on Roughhead than Franklin though.

Future on-field events will be the ONLY practical justification of all events that occured on draft day. At this point, Hawthorn fans can only (and are only) offering argument to support the theoretical, philosophical and unabashedly long-term approach adopted by the club on the day.

Its true that some Hawk fans can romance things a bit, although it is equally noticeable that a good number of Tiger fans have markedly lowered their evaluation of Roughhead since the draft came and went and he didn't end up at Punt Rd as was widely tipped and expected.

This must mean that Deledio wasn't a standout player for Richmond then either, given that Tezza, by his own admission, was caused so much angst in "tossing-up" between him and Tambling?

The wiz?

Id assume he watches more TAC games than you at least.

No doubt.

Of course, the umpteen club scouts who chose hackers and overlooked Adam Goodes had watched a lot more TAC games than me also.

Bentleigh If Roughead or Franklin had ended up at Richmond, which they very easily could have, you would telling us how you would have the best forward line in the world in a few years time... Hawthorn has them both so that can only be a good thing with all the media talking about how lacking hawthorn's current forward line is? So that's the decision they made, they've got a hard nut midfielder at 7 with good skills and great shape so I think they're looking in the right direction. Stop your obsession and get over it.

You may just be right.

Good thing it turned out with them both at the club hey.

I would have liked Roughead at the club. Id talk about them the exact same way if they were at Richmond.

I rate them as the 2 best talls in the draft, but not in the league of Tambling, Deledio or Griffin.

Ahhh, the Bentman! You know the above statement is utter cr@p (talking Franklin down if he was a Tiger). Why the big Hawthorn chip on your shoulder? What have they done to you? By your reckoning you should be thanking us for making an "obvious" stuff up at the draft table allowing you to get 2 touch Tambling. And before you get into me about the Hawks wanting him before the draft, forget it, I wanted Griffen, Franklin and Wood. But hey, the Hawks chose the guys that they did and we won't know if we stuffed up until 5 years down the track.

Indeed. Want a hug?

And about you wanting Griffin over the Bling man I seem to recall -

Here's hoping! But I have a feeling that if the Dogs take Roughead at 3 then the Tigers will take Griffen at 4. If that happens we get 2 aboriginals with awesome (dare I say it) POTENTIAL!

Seasoned football watchers know that when you put elite young midfielders together with elite young talls, the former will almost invariably look better than the latter, because the latter develop behind the former. No matter how much you would like to argue otherwise, the fact remains that 5 footballers were ranked in an elite class for 2004, with their positions rotating throughout the year. The fact that the two talls were ranked so closely with the midfielders in this instance more than justifies their recruitment with a view to the longterm, considering that the midfielders will most likely only develop marginally from here, whilst much of the development for the talls is yet to come.
That's it in a nutshell. Just get over it Bent Lee. You can keep your picks and we will certainly keep ours.

That's funny, cause I thought that's what Richmond fans were doing to Hawthorn fans. (namely you and the One-eyed tosser) Continually trying to tell us that Franklin is the best player in the draft, and that Richmond stuffed up because they got the two best players in the draft.
What rock did you crawl out from under? Get your facts straight you little weasel. From Day 1 following the draft Bent Lee and his mates having been going on and on about how we stuffed up, we'd be sorry etc etc. I do think Franklin will be the best player form the draft, but I would have never uttered those words had not other w@nkers continued to go and on about the subject.

besides I believe my comments about you to be entirely correct, you're a teen fantasist without a clue. you claim to know things you clearly don't, so don't try and convince anyone that you have a part to play in a serious discussion.

hard to argue with any of that.

the way I see it:
Richmond were expecting to take Deledio & Roughead; when that didn't play out, they took what they felt was the best available player. fine. Though you should remember that Plough has been widely criticised for his drafting at the doggies and his obssession with on ballers & utility types at the expense of KPP.

Hawthorn clearly wanted 2 KPP and an on baller. nothing wrong there. I think they expected to get Tambling, Franklin & Meesen; at the last they decided that Roughead was the player they wanted, and were so convinced that they thought it worthwhile changing the mix to get the player they wanted. Maybe they hoped to still get Tambling, it doesn't matter, they were prepared to risk not getting him.

So in effect hawthorn have laid their cards on the table and said Jarryd Roughead is the nuts. Time will tell if they were right.

you have no idea, and everything you say confirms it. Richmond wanted Tambling and Deledio. They were going to go for Roughead because they couldn't believe hawthorn would pass up on tambling. The draft as far as the top two picks for richmond could not have worked out better. Now have some milk and cookies, maybe put on the latest dvd of HI-Five, then build a few blocks with your leggo set and go to sleep. Don't try and discuss isssues your IQ cannot understand. Focus on other things like drawing pictures and that problem you have at night were your mummy has to keep changing your sheets. Hahahah

tremendous contribution, thanks for your insight

why don't you address some of the things pointed towards you? this is why you attract such ridicule, you refuse to answer basic questions and think you have gotten away with it.

can you explain to anyone here, why we should take you or your definitive statements seriously?

point blank; why do you think you know things that can't be known?

until then, you are a 16 yr old boy who wants to pretend he's grown up.
