I hear what you say about Sentana , but when you have a look at what we have got currently it would not hurt.
Grant and Cordy could not crash through a banner let alone a pack, Panos untried at this level but would love to see him get a go.Hill again until he kicks multible goals at VFL level he can't be considered. This than puts the onus onto Jones and as brave as he is he is no Brown ,Cloke or Kennedy.Roughead at best is a ruckman along with Minson.
Sentana also would be cheap insurance for the likes of Williams , Hargraves whom are both injury proned and Morris who may take longer than expected to recover from a broken leg.In summary we are not exactly bursting at the seems with an abundance of big bodies to have a presence like Geelong , Collingwood etc.

Setanta is a C grade forward at best and I'm not sure where all the talk about him being able to play both ends comes from?? He defends like Muligan (sorry James).. Cordy and Grant mighten be able to crash packs yet and Panos is unproven but they need to be given the chance ahead of other teams rejects.

Setanta is the sort of player I'd be happy to see us take as a mature rookie if we were still in contention. He's got more agro than Barlow and can play multiple positions (including ruck) even though he is not great at any of them. It was great watching him go nuts and kick a few goals despite his general lack of skill.

We don't need him and I wouldn't want him to end up with us. He's apparently a ripping bloke though. Hope to see him play again at AFL level.

GIVE FEV A GO!!!!
Despite a poor season just gone, I still see the dogs as a major player next season with a full and healthy list. We were crucified with our decimated backline this year, and an injury riddled season for Cooney. Now with Barry Hall's retirement I see a gaping hole up forward. Jones looks like a player, but his kicking lets him down, and Grant looks a tad lost and may need a stint down back or on the wing to regain confidence. I think the Dogs like they did in picking up Hall 2 years ago, should seriously consider Fev, as he is a gun forward at his best, who is a strong mark and excellent kick at goal. OK, he has baggage, but so did Hall. The year out of the game he has had may yet see him, like Hall, want to be remembered for his actual ability. It was only a few years back the guy kicked 99 goals. The dogs would get him for nothing (minimum wage, plus match payments) it would enable more help up forward with developing young kids like Jones, Grant, Roughead and Cordy. Also with alot of our current list in there late 20's, the window for a premiership may be closing.
Fev is also an infectious personality, and when firing his enthusiasm rubs off. Is it wrong to give someone a chance? if he stuffs up again, you put a clause in his contract that immediately shows him the door. I just think he is what the dogs need to make a serious tilt at the finals. Thoughts???

Yep, Fev has an infectious personality.... Why would you want everyone to start acting like Fev??!?!

That's no dramas. I just thought he's an extremely cheap option to replace Hall. What does Ben Nason bring to the table? Dahlhaus is a better player, and has better hair!!

As much as I hold that Setanta doesn't merit a place on an AFL list, I believe he's an ideal candidate for a rookie list. Experienced, mature and ready to go in case of an injury to a KPP. Whether Setanta would block the development in the VFL of a young Hill or Panos or whether he would provide invaluable backup - that's really up to the match committee and the new coach's assessment of the list and our depth. I would prefer to take a bloke who has been tearing it up in the VFL as tall insurance but Setanta would be a decent rookie-listed insurance. He isn't as bad as people are making out on here!

However I'm going to vote NO to Setanta as I'm sure there are better insurance / backup options out there should we decide we need one.

The only thing with that is, isn't Barlow doing that exact same role on the rookie list? They would give similar output I think.
Would we really need 2 of those kinds of guys? I would rather develop young guys.

Anyone who thinks our window is still open isn't playing with a full deck. We'll finish somewhere between 12-16 next year and probably the same the year after. Good opportunity to use the compo picks in whichever appears to be a stronger draft. The likes of Fevola, Setanta, Dawson et al will make not an iota of difference to where we finish next year. All it will do is cause frustration amongst us supporters who will see a bottom 6 team continue to play players with no future at the expense of getting game time into our kids.

You have got to be kidding me!! We were crucified with injuries to our best and most important players and only had a half fit barry hall for half a year.. It was the year from hell but on the bright side our gun midfield is still there, coon is ready to prove he is not done. If lake is up and going ,the human glove firing and massive improvement from wood and williams our back line is very strong and with jones, dal, gia, higgins, vez, tutt and bob murphy back across half forward, and add the big FEV, we will play finals. thats why fev at full forward is needed for us to stay in contention. GET HIM!!!!!!!!

We wont be in contention. Our list isn't strong enough. Any other thought is delusional. We could make finals, but I would rather develop the team we are banking on being around for our next flag tilt, rather than bring in a w***er FF, who will only halt development of our young forwards.

Completely different players IMO, Barlow struggles with the contested stuff and is probably best as a third tall or a tall wingman trying to exploit a tall player through speed or a shorter player with height - it's about using his attributes to create a mismatch. He's competing with other players on a HFF or as a third tall.

Setanta would be used as a solid body down back. You'd stick him in the goal square to straighten the team up and bring the ball to ground but he wouldn't kick many goals or he could pinch hit down back to force contests and maybe even ruck around the ground a bit. He would only take the place of an injured KPP or if we needed a strong body. If Lake or Williams or Jones went down, would you prefer Barlow or Setanta? If we needed a third tall with height and speed, would you rather promote Barlow? Or at least, that's how I'd be seeing their potential roles in 2012. Not saying we should pick up Setanta but he would fulfill a different role and provide different insurance to Barlow.

Looking at this another way, what kind of mature player (if any) do we need to add to our list? I'd prefer a more pure forward or more pure defense option than a bit player like Setanta but I'm not sure who is out there. Ultimately do we need a stop gap measure? Probably not.

Agree with all of that.

Hi Polecat, welcome to BF.
I've responded in general terms in the Fev thread to most of what's in your post but I couldn't let this one go through to the keeper. Nothing personal.

"Bad Boy" contract clauses are fine but just think about the Aker debacle last year. He was quite rightly shown the door but it simmered all year and you'd be daft to think it had no impact on the club as well as the players. We wasted a lot of effort in hosing down one Aker story after another and we were continually on the back foot. It was bad PR for the club even though Aker was already widely considered a difficult type to manage before he joined us (even Leigh Matthews couldn't sort him out!) People couldn't wait to tell us "I told you so!"

Now look at how Fev is followed by the footy tabloids and TV journos. If he stuffed up at the WB imagine how that would affect us. We would probably be seen as the down-at-heel club that can only afford to take on nut cases (with a poor success rate of 1 in 3). And we are serial offenders. That's exactly the sort of image we need to shake.

I'm with HK Bulldog. Let's build the tough, disciplined, feared team that BM is talking about. If that means doing it through drafting 18yos with the right attitude, then let's do it.

Fev is not the answer. Herpes has an infectious personality too but you wouldn't want any of that to rub off, would you?

Quayle says we will be taking 4 picks in the draft, and observes that since GWS owns so many of the early first round picks (11 out of the first 14) there will be a few onballers slip because GWS will have to take a variety of types - they cant just select 11 onballers.

Do you think that means we will be looking to take a quality on baller with 17, and we think Talia won't be there? Or just rather a mid over a KPD? Neither Talia or a high quality mid will be there at 39.

Draft day is so long away now :(

That seems to be fairly consistent with what I've heard. I'd prefer it that way too, and then we can look at a KPD at pick 39.

That's assuming there are any KPD's left by pick 39. No point in picking up a tall at pick 39 'cause well, they're tall and we need a tall to make the average height of our draft picks look good on

I'm not selling memberships so I'll be straight up and down. Our team on paper is bottom 6 no doubt.

Midfield: Two genuine guns in Boyd and Griffen and one up and comer in Libber. Then we have Cooney on one leg, Cross on his way to retirement, Higgins , Moles :D and Djekurra :cool.

Forward: No genuine gun. One up and comer in Jones, a young guy who has stagnated in Grant. Two promising types in Dahlhaus and Tutt, one solid role player in Sherman, Gia on his way to retirement and question marks over Vez.

Backs: One genuine gun in Murphy. A solid type in Williams, promising types in Wood and Howard, a fringe role player in Markovic, Gilbee on his way to retirement an big question marks over Lake, Morris, Hargrave all coming back from major injuries at 30 years of age.

Where on that list tells you Finals let alone a premiership? Apart from Boyd, Griff and Murphy, no other player would be regulars in a top 8 team. At the young end, we only have 2 genuinely exciting kids in Libber and Jones, then some very promising ones in Dahlhaus, Cordy and Roughead. Our other kids are no better than what every other list has.
From where I sit, our time is past and it's time to reload.
