I'm not going to lie I'd take Howard for Gunston in a straight swap, still think Howard's going to be a very good player though forwards like Gunston to come around to often, in saying this our pick 17 in this years draft would have to go to a winger with elite skills.

If he was a bit taller, and more of a KPD I would, but I dont think we need any more third forwards!

Thats not to say I wouldnt take him, but Id also love to keep Howard, and preferably our first pick (for Talia) and also our compo for the good draft next year!

But seriously, imagine how much better that one extra pick for Ward we SHOULD have got would have been!

My draft hopes are as follows for what's it's worth:

1st Rounder: Outside midfielder with elite skills.
2nd Rounder: Trade for a Jordan Lisle type (young KP, only 21)
3rd Rounder: Mature Age KP
4th Rounder: Mature Age Mid

Delist: Stack, Mulligan, Prato

Trade Bait: Addison, Reid, Gilbee, Hill

If we have to trade Lake then I'd rather play ball with Hawthorn. They need a big bodied full back to free up Gibson to play the Morris role so they'd be willing to make a deal for a player like Lake.

We desperately need key defenders.
We also need more speed in the midfield and running defenders.
Apart from Lukey D and Tutt, it seems like there are huge question marks over all our young small forwards. Tutt is probably more suited to a wing as well.
Minson can play ruck for a year or two until Roughy and Cordy come on, but he isn’t really that good and we should try to get a better ruckman if we can.
Panos, Grant and Jones probably aren’t ready to be stars yet, but there isn’t really anyone available who is ready and getting a mediocre player will only stunt their growth.
Our kids are pretty good, but the guys in the 21-25 age bracket like Reid, Addison, Hill and Stack haven’t come on.

So here’s what we should do:
Get a pick in the mini draft for our Ward compo and Sam Reid. (Hopefully the rumours are true. We could throw in Moles, and Addison as well. I can’t see this getting O’Meara but it might get the second pick so we could get Crouch. That would also mean we wouldn’t have to pay Moles out. )

Trade Lake for Kane Lucas and Jordan Russell. (I know it’s a shame to lose Lake, but they are going to throw everything at us for him so we could get massive overs for him. Lucas would give us speed in the midfield, he is going to be a star and he has more than ten years left. Russell is a handy player as well. Lake probably only has 2 or 3 years left and isn’t really part of the future for us.)

Trade our 3rd round pick for Gillies. (Look at Mumford and Laidler, Geelong isn’t an easy team to get a game in. Those two seemed like “meh” players as well. Geelong have been grooming him to take over from Scarlett.)

Trade Josh Hill for Lewis Stevenson and WC’s 4th round pick. (That WC supporter said they were interested in him and Stevenson is supposedly the best kick at West Coast. But he can’t get a game there.)

Trade Gilbee and WC’s 4th round pick for Seaby. (Apparently Sydney is interested in Gilbee to give them some class in the back half and Seaby looks good whenever he gets the number 1 ruck role.)

Trade Minson, pick 17 and our fourth round pick to GWS for Ahmed Saad, pick 13 and Tim Mohr. (We won’t need Will if we get Seaby. Saad is a star and would be way ahead of most of our small forwards. We can make sure we get Talia if we get pick 13. Mohr is similar to Faulks last year. He is young, but already the best defender in the VFL. So he would be a good depth player.)

Trade our second round pick to Port for Danyle Pearce. (I know he seems lazy, but every one does at Port. He won the Rising Star ahead of Dale Thomas and would add a lot of class to our midfield.)

So that all means:
Out: Ward compo, Reid, Moles, Addison, Lake, Hill, Gilbee, Minson, pick 17, 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks, Mulligan (delisted), Hall and Huddo
In: Mini draft pick, Lucas, Russell, Gillies, Stevenson, Seaby, Saad, Mohr, pick 13
Overall, apart from Minson, Lake and possibly Gilbee, a lot of those blokes aren’t worth keeping on. I know we won’t have much left in the draft, but all of those players are worth more than the picks we are giving up.
In the draft, we can use pick 13 on Talia and our 5th and 6th round picks to upgrade Dahlhaus and Panos.

Then we should cut Prato and Barlow. Hahn is retired as well. Then we should rookie Rose again. (Why did we get rid of him, he seems like a carbon copy of Lecras.) And use our remaining four rookie picks on kids, or other mature agers like Valenti.

Wow, that’s a lot longer than it was supposed to be.

Some of those trades you mentioned, are wayyyyyyyyy in our favour, and I wouldnt go near Seaby, but other then that it seems pretty good for us I guess.

which ones, and Seaby is better than Will.

Also, we don't have to do all of it, and there are other players we could get if we missed out on some of them.
If Lake is leaving though it is more likely to work because we will have heaps of money from him and ward to throw at pearce, gillies etc.

geez, if trading was that easy...

Id like us to draft McKenzie or similar with our first round draft pick (address first priority), trade for someone like gillies or a well-creditialled non-AFL-listed mature KPD (to meet second priority) and then simply draft the best available with our latter picks which are likely to be fingers-crossed types.

I don't think that would get us a mini draft pick, MAYBE if the rumours are true about them paying overs for Reid, also maybe if we chucked in Gilbee because they need a classy mature player.

We will be lucky to get just Lucas for him, they wont chuck in Russell as well, I think we should try and work out a deal for Lucas though, just what we need!

Trade our 3rd round pick for Gillies. (Look at Mumford and Laidler, Geelong isn’t an easy team to get a game in. Those two seemed like “meh” players as well. Geelong have been grooming him to take over from Scarlett.)

Agree with this, we need a young key back, and I think he could step up nicely given some more opportunities!

Trade Josh Hill for Lewis Stevenson and WC’s 4th round pick. (That WC supporter said they were interested in him and Stevenson is supposedly the best kick at West Coast. But he can’t get a game there.)

Just Hill for Stevenson would be in our favour, I doubt they will chuck in a 4th round pick, but Hill looks certain to go to WC so I think we could work out something for Stevenson.

Trade Gilbee and WC’s 4th round pick for Seaby. (Apparently Sydney is interested in Gilbee to give them some class in the back half and Seaby looks good whenever he gets the number 1 ruck role.)

Would rather just stay away from an older, ordinary ruckman, just keep willo to fill the gap until roughy and cordy step up.

I think we should try something like this, we dont really need another small forward, but can he play midfield? and Tim Mohr sounds like he would be a good recruit, but GC wont want Minson, they have Zac Smith and Minson can not be a second ruck, but we should try and work out some sort of pick upgrade from 17-13 so we could get Talia/Mackenzie.

Trade our second round pick to Port for Danyle Pearce. (I know he seems lazy, but every one does at Port. He won the Rising Star ahead of Dale Thomas and would add a lot of class to our midfield.)

Not very interested in Pearce, would rather just have faith in Howard/Tutt.

So that all means:
Out: Ward compo, Reid, Moles, Addison, Lake, Hill, Gilbee, Minson, pick 17, 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks, Mulligan (delisted), Hall and Huddo
In: Mini draft pick, Lucas, Russell, Gillies, Stevenson, Seaby, Saad, Mohr, pick 13

Wow, that’s a lot longer than it was supposed to be.

Also I think we should make a play for Lisle, wouldnt be too much (actually it is Hawks were talking about)

But I wouldnt want to get Talia/Lisle/Gillies/Mohr that just seems like we will have way too many key backs, I'd say Mohr and one of Talia/Lisle/Gillies, depending on how much we have to give up to get them.

Draft pick and a bunch of delisting candidates for mini draft - No chance

Trade Lake for Kane Lucas and Jordan Russell. (I know it’s a shame to lose Lake, but they are going to throw everything at us for him so we could get massive overs for him. Lucas would give us speed in the midfield, he is going to be a star and he has more than ten years left. Russell is a handy player as well. Lake probably only has 2 or 3 years left and isn’t really part of the future for us.)

Young midfielder and half back who came 2nd in there B&F last year for a 29yo that has injury concerns - No chance

That is effectively Minson and a dowgrade for Saad who GWS will keep - No chance

Trade our second round pick to Port for Danyle Pearce. (I know he seems lazy, but every one does at Port. He won the Rising Star ahead of Dale Thomas and would add a lot of class to our midfield.)

Other clubs near top would given a late first round if Pearce was on table due to his speed and disposal - No Chance

And Seaby is not better than Minson, he is a very ordinary ruckman who is lucky to still be on an AFL list.

is he contracted? You guys didn't get much for Laidler and Mumford who went under similar circumstances.

Laidler+41 for 36 and 53 = George Horlin-Smith and Jordan Schroder
Mumford for 28 = Mitch Duncan (Premiership Player)

Got plenty for Mumford, for Laidler remains to be seen but those two are very promising in the VFL so far.

Trade Gilbee and WC’s 4th round pick for Seaby. (Apparently Sydney is interested in Gilbee to give them some class in the back half and Seaby looks good whenever he gets the number 1 ruck role.)
.

Sydney were interested in Gilbee about 7 years ago they are not interested now.

Its safe to say Lake will be at the Bulldogs next year and beyond.

We must be very, very wary about dealing with the Cats. Callan was serviceable at best, DJ was heart in the mouth stuff until late in the year and Street....we'll, I don't know what to say.

The last decent player we got from the Cats was Matty Robbins and that was a long, long time ago.

Please Dogs, do not get starstruck into accepting any old scraps from the Cats just because they're the premiership team.

I'd be happy if we landed Lisle.

Traded Gilbee and Addison for picks and gained a Clinton Young with one of those picks.

Never trust hawthorn - we would be guaranteed to be dudded, some way or another

Don't you think we have enough injury prone players that can't hit side of a barn from 30 metres away....

Well, really, thats a third round pick and a second round pick upgrade for laidler in another compromised draft. When you consider that our third round pick is better than Carlton's was it's really quite a similar deal. You got a second round pick for mumford who is clearly a star, and one of the best ruckmen going around. That is definitely unders. Yes, Duncan is a good player, but there's no reason you can't pick another good player from the draft.

Yes, Gillies is contracted. And as has already been said, they got decent enough trades with Mumford and Laidler.

On an unrelated note, Emma Quayle tweeted 2 hours ago that we are very interested in Gunston, and that the Crows want to deal with us. I hope that isn't true, while I would like Gunston, I dont want to give up any of our quality kids/picks.

Mumford was also out of contract and could have just walked to the draft. Gillies is covered for next year - Scarlett has said he doesn't want to play the full season in 2012, perfect opportunity for Gillies to get some game time.

Ms Quayle has said the doggies are very keen on Gunston and Crows would rather deal with you

Hmm, this is a pretty good source.

I can see how we might be interested in Gunston, but I cant see how swapping Howard for him benefits us? We need more guys that can kick, not less.

I hope the crows are 'intersted in dealing with us' merely to put the screws on hawthorn with this one.

Howard has to be off limits for at least another 2 years.... to trade him now would only be crazy.....
