Malceski is all about role. Seemed to be playing across HF when he actually played in 2009, which was just horrible for his confidence as it appeared to be a really unnatural role that he just felt uncomfortable with.

He has, IMO, one of the best kicks at the club (certainly one of the most penetrating) when he is in form and full of confidence. I dont really know why roos wouldnt play him in a sweeping half back roll? Maybe the arrival of rhyce shaw has taken his spot in this sort of role - swans seemed to give the ball the shaw at every opportunity for his run and carry.

One to watch in the preseason, and if he is in the right role, he will definately be worth it.

For some reason ive got a bit of a good feeling about him, but thats just my gut! :p

Looking ahead a little bit here, but assuming Harley & Milburn hang up the boots, who does this open up the door for? Perhaps Wojcinski can cement a spot in the team or Hunt when he comes back - either could play that rebounding defender role, similar to Milburn. Who takes Harley's spot - maybe young defenders Laidler or Gillies? Or does a midfielder go back there to help Enright in rebounding the ball, possibly Kelly? Will be interesting in PS to see what happens there.

To be honest, i think Roos was 'hiding' him in the forward pocket last year. No doubt he has great potential as a player but i just can't feel confident in him.

I think there is a place for him in the backline still, form depending. Mattner (IMO) has the ability to do a defensive job and hurt his opponent on the rebound and Shaw, well i think he will get tagged nearly every game next year, like he was towards the end of this year. Therefore, i believe Malceski definitely does still have a position as a rebounding defender.

One thing also to consider with Malceski is that, since he has returned from his ACL, he has been getting several associated leg injuries which means that his durability is certainly questionable. At his price he could probably be used purely to make some money but i don't like selecting players purely on that premise. I just see far too many risks but if he has a stellar preseason he could offer some sort of value IMO. Only time will tell i guess, i want to see him return successfully but there are still plenty of doubts, ACL's have recked plenty of promising careers in the past......

My gut against yours then:p

Very good point. If they retire does that drag mackie and/or enright to more defensive roles? If so, who is the rebounder (and the most important DTer). The back six at the cats will be one to watch PS.

I got this idea too. I sort of felt like roos was kind of saving him, and then was just going to unleash him. Perhaps he thought give him a few games with no responsibility to get the confidence up? Didnt work though - roos should of just slotted him straight back into his old role.

Matter is an interesting one - from memory, in the last few rounds of the year, he was actually being given run with roles well up into the midfield, as oppose to playing primarily in the back half. Was interesting, and it may be something roos looks to develop in the futre.

Yep - all about preseason.

Well, he is priced at an average of around 55 from memory - he only needs to average 70 with a couple of 90+ scores (easily possible) to be worth it. However, there does seem to be some value in the lower end (walker, ladson, buckley, waters, myers, etc, etc).

Im going to find it seriously hard not to load up on Hawks players next year. Hodge, Ladson, Birchall, Young and Buddy all represent decent value - not too mention players possibly in line for a breakout season like Dowler and Renouf.

Ladson and Dowler are both big chances to be Port players next year, not Hawthorn players.

Geeez!! How's the quality of conversation this time of year! Much more inviting, especially to the newer posters like myself.

Looking forward to a big preseason :)

I highly, highly doubt Dowler will be traded as part of the Burger deal - last year was the first time he has shown any good signs of development. We arent exactly just going to ship him off now, especially after all the years we have put into him.

Ladson is a higher chance to be traded, but he just signed a new two year deal. Pick 9 by itself, take it or leave it. ;)

So I was checking the Fan Planner feature, and noticed Brian Lake. Anyone considering him next year? He has only missed 2 games in 5 seasons, and looks good for an 80 average. He might not have much upside, but he looks to be a fairly safe, reliable choice.

Agree with what you say but for mine I'll be trying to find 30 players likely to improve rather than pay top $ for good players with (probably) no upside. At the moment I'm thinking Harbrow based on his finish to the season might be a better proposition than Lake.

Yeah fair enough. Lake fits in with a number of players that are durable with limited upside - Newman and Birchall are another two. Handy players to have, but can be picked up cheap during the season.

Also, Stephen Hill got mentioned in the mids thread - if he can up his average to 75 he could be a cheap backline keeper. Another person in that vein would be Andy Otten. Finished the season with an average of 68.5 and should improve on that in his third year. Should be a monty for a back classification, and if he can get his average up to 75-80 he could be another cheap keeper.

Thoughts?

Otten certainly needs to be watched. Hopefully he can get small rotations through the midfield.

David Mundy had a good year this year, but I wonder if there is still some improvement in him. Hasn't missed a game in the past 4 years, improved every year. This year he got some attention in the second half of the year. With Palmer coming back in who would get the tag from freo?

Adelaide's list assessment was posted on the Adelaide board a few days ago, and I was disappointed to see no mention of Andy moving into the middle. With Adelaide's strong midfield rotations, perhaps they don't see it as being necessary, and would rather use Otten's height in the backline. Will have to watch intently come February/March.

Pav ;).

If burgoyne goes to freo (IRRC this is a possibility?), pavlich remains in the midfield, and palmer is fit, I cant see mundy getting much attention.

He seemed to struggle with consistency - both week to week, and from quarter to quarter within a game itself. Im talking about the scores of 54, 38, 43, 57, 62, 61 - turning the 30s/40s into 60s, and the extra tonne here and there is a possibility. He did seem a little disinterested at times in 2009 IMO, so maybe with a bit more confidence and a better team performance he might improve.

Even if he could increase his average by another 5ppg, combine this with his durability, I think he may be an enticing option (again :p).

Adelaide has enough good young midfielders, im not surprised he wasnt mentioned in that regard. He is however a great link-man coming out of defense, something the Crows love to hit up. I have fond memories of him and Bock (also in my 09 team) chipping it around to each other to end quarters. :D

But with a back classification, all im asking of my keepers is a 75 average, and regardless of MF time he should be capable of that. All it takes is one injury (say to Goodwin) for him to get more of a HB-flank type role or rotations through the middle.

While it is possible, I think once a player nominates a club then it's pretty much a done deal. Doubt he'll be anywhere other than Hawthorn next season.
Lakey must be referring to Lovett... surely? Burgoyne has already stated he is specifically going to a Victorian club.

Ah yes he has nominated his club - maybe i was thinking or lovett? Or maybe i imagined the whole thing (also a likely possibility).

Lovett was linked to Freo in the press, but I can't see them trading for him, given their reluctance to give Haselby a contract.

I am really struggling to find any backs who average 80-90 that i am confident in at the moment. Hodge, Mackie, Kelly, Carrazzo etc are enticing but not really durable and only Enright and possibly Doughty stand out to me. It would be nice to get Gram and/or Hargrave but i can't free up the cash to do it, this is becoming real frustrating.

What's the point of getting frustrated about it now? I haven't even considered planning my team.
