If anyone is thinking of getting polkinghorne and is a bit unsure, this should make you lean towards selecting him a bit.

I dont really like those signs much at all.

1. He himself is still unsure where he will play whether it is up forward or in the mids. Staker could easily be thrown down back at some stage which could leave polkinghorn up forward. Buckanan wont even effect the scenario because he is a small forward.

2. He admits himself he doesnt get alot of the footy. Its nice he tries to produce quality possession but dreamteam is quantity over quality unfortunatly. No bonus points for quality! If rather run with a dangerfield who should get more time now with the otten injury imo but perhaps the NAB will change my thoughts. Just have to wait n see

No need for a DP link to the backs... they're gonna be rock solid for 2010. ;)

Is that what Santa told you.:p

Plus - i see much more downgrade opportunities in the mids with the likes of Cunnington, Lucas, Melksham likely to come into the frame at some stage.

He'll get 1-2 games at most. Trav Colyer is our most AFL-ready draftee this year. He could easily get a Zaharakis type run of games at any point. As an inside/outside midfielder, he could also get some pretty decent scores. Selection will always be his concern though.

I have been a fan of his for quite a while, unless Warren blows me away in the NAB cup, or Mayne for that matter, then he will be starting round 1 for me.:thumbsu:

The problem with going with the mid priced player is that he is unliklely to make you any money that you may want to use for upgrades down the track so you will be limited in finding funds to upgrade players meaning the youll have to probably downgrade some of your better players to get the players you want. At that rate youll either run out of trades quick smart or wont have the money to afford the players you really need to better your side throughout the season
I can see Scully,Martin and Trengrove rising to at least 300k+ should they play at least 15 games this season with the chance that you might make another 100-130k gain from players like Morabito,Shuey,Cunnington and Bastinac.
This which will give you a huge cash injection to upgrade players later on and allows you to fit as many high priced guns at the start of the season as well and thats got to be better than what any mid range player will get you.
Nobody wins any fantasy comp without taking risks and being conservative in this game will not get you very far at all so its best to take a punt on some of these kids early on to set you up later on down the track.

I reckon the mid priced players are the more assured option. You know they're going to play 22 game barring injury and hopefully will make around $100k. Rich's season avg of 75ppg was definitely above average and shouldn't be expected. Anthony was just an anomaly. Like others have said it's really not that easy to pick a winning rookie and last year we were spoiled. Plus the ones that don't work out i can downgrade to a rookie who i have been able to watch and will know will make money. I've gone with Masten, M. McVeigh, Crowley plus McLean.

I think you need a Ablett or Swan to start so you can lock in captain for each week (i learnt that last year after so many times stuffing up my choice). Gone with Swan purely cause of durability. Players like Gibbs, Pendlebury, Selwood haven't proven themselves yet with handling tags week in week out so not gonna risk that investment.

Anyone having a look in at Jarrad McVeigh?

Watched the Swans scratchie today and thought he was excellent. Outside, goal-kicking midfielder... he seemed to push back into defence a lot and players used him on the way out.

Had a very good first quarter, and kicked the footy a lot.

Has been able to score big numbers just not consistently, and reasonably durable (22,22,22,18 in the past 4 years). Definitely looks primed.

I wouldnt touch him personally, can have some pretty low scores.

Mid piced players are more likely to play week in week out but trying to find one thats going to make you money is difficult so youll find it hard to find funds to upgrade players. There are at least 7 -8 rookies who are capable of averaging 60 this year who are far cheaper than than your mid pricer and will make you money averaging slightly less in points than your mid priced player but will give you far greater flexibility to upgrade later down the track.

Yes the rookies may well go up in price quicker than the mid pricers but while they are doing that , if they are starters for you, then you're losing points if you have too many. Very few rookies play the first 8 games which is how many they need to play to reach peak price. You're better off with a steady flow of rookies rather than try to have them all at the start IMO.

Is there anyone considering Mark McVeigh? 29 years old, durability a worry he's played 16,21,21,21,14,11 games since 2004, initially played as a tagger 05,06. budget priced at $ 268,400 if he maintains an average of 80+ he could net as much as $100,000 + in cash he's also been reported every year since 2003, ahhh on second thoughts I've talked myself out of it.

Exactly, I like to have maybe 1 or 2 starting, with the rest there as cover. The points you lose from having them on the field over mid pricers will cost you points early, and it may not be able to be recovered. Just my opinion anyway, and is why I only have Trengove starting (and TDL in round 1 as cover for Buddy).

I have him in my team at the moment but Im not really sure. There are a lot of midfielders that I want.

You wont be loosing points at all picking rookies who are playing because it allows you to have more premium type players that you dont have to worry about upgrading and more than likely they will outscore any other cheaper mid you might be forced to have due to spending more on a mid priced player.
Youll end up blowing all your trades quickly by choosing too many mid pricers as you wont find many that youll end up keeping so youll be looking to trade them off as well as your rookies during the season whereas if you choose a side full of rookies and premiums you only need to upgrade about 8-9 rookies because its quite possible you can start the season with 13-14 keepers

McVeigh

- Averaged over 63 twice in 10 years

- Missed 19 games in past 2 years with several different injuries, including soft tissue

- Will turn 29 this year

- Suspended Rd 1

Outside of that he looks solid.

Each to their own. There are 2 well established strategies. Some prefer guns and rookies as you obviously do while others prefer the mid pricer strategy. IMO the mid pricer strategy may be better suited this year due to the availability of good mid pricers with clearly identifiable reason to feel confident about their likely improvement. I feel confident we can pick out a few mid pricers who will be worthy keepers. On the other hand there don't appear (at this early stage) to be as many rookies standing out as in previous years.

All sounds good in theory.

The problem is there's a rookie out there that none of us have talked about, and he's going to absolutely kill it.

And there's also a rookie that we've been all over for the last 3 months, and he's going to end up being useless.

And there goes 3 of your trades, jsut like that.

With midpricers you at least know what you're going to get. No nasty trade burning surprises. Worst case is that they pump out the same average, you lose no money and don't cop donuts.

A. Moore
M. Davies
J. Webberly
K. Hardingham
G. Rohan

All on my radar waiting to be traded into my team if they get listed rnd 1.

Hmmm... an Adelaide supporter

Rory Sloane perhaps... at 175k he's not really a rookie

Must be Phil Davis

Sorry to burst your bubble, he won't play more than 5 games this year.

Yes I know. That's why he's not in my team yet.

But if he does something interesting in NAB (or plays in NAB) and then gets listed... you'd have to start thinking about taking the punt.

Won't Happen, He's body is not mature enough. That's the one thing you can't change over the course of the NAB cup.
