Dwayne Russell: "Can Majak Daw be to the Roos what Liam Jurrah is to the Demons"

Now umma gonna stick up for Dwayne on this one.

It seems pretty clear to me that he is talking about the respective journeys travelled by Jurrah and Daw.

To be the first to make it to the AFL from the red centre of tribal Australia or the North East African desert of Sudan, to 'trailblaze' if you will, is no mean feat in anyone's language.

I know from observing at a distance (but closely and with great interest) the way that the MFC has become intimately involved in Liam's story and his ancestral home in Yuendemu (read Martin Flanagan's very compelling articles in this respect) that Liam's journey has left an indelible imprint on the club. It seems to me that the MFC has learned as much from the interaction as has Jurrah - and that's saying something.

Soo, too, could Majak's path have a similar impact on the NMFC.

I see no racism here; merely a celebration by way of comment on the continued evolution of our great game.

Inb4 thanks Dwayne.

I guess what pleased me is that he looked very comfortable against two pretty good size, for most ruck types you are probably looking at age 22 years and onwards, so he has plenty of time to develop.

For most players (regardless of position) you should be looking at age 22 and onwards, yet people see Chris Judd winning the Brownlow at 21 back in 2004 and think that's the normal trajectory of development.

I don't see any racism either. I just see Russell as being an annoying ****.

So I guess you could say his commentary was 'half arsed' and done by a 'halfwit'

:D Very good.

Dwayne is a fool, and it's great to see the majority of different clubs' supporters agree.

I will say though that what most teams need, and what gets most people through the gates, is at least one player with freakish ability, who does thing you can't quite believe you are watching and doesn't play to the usual rules. They try things you're not supposed to try. Most kids these days, even if they are very good, play in similar styles - maybe its the production line that produces most AFL players, teaches them to play percentages - but it makes the ones who aren't from the mould more exciting to watch. A lot of those guys who have travelled a different path to footy, even if they have nothing else in common, are black - examples that are jumping into my head include Jurrah, Franklin and Harry O'Brien. It goes beyond good, it's like they learned and are playing a different game.

Very early days but Majak doesn't play like anyone else, and if he keeps improving he looks likely to be the sort of player you'd go along just to watch. As a North supporter, that would be very exciting.

It was UNBELIEVABLE! just how annoying he was.

I turned it off at halftime of the first game.

I only kept it on because Geelong were playing.

He is just horrible. And we seem to get him all the time too. He has one volume - full. Screams everything. The endless hype, and the tidal wave of irrelevant information about what your latest draft pick did when they were 10. Then of course you get the mindless repetitive cliches:

- "Unbelievable"
- "As good as it gets"

And, the phrase that any commentator should be shot without trial for using - "from the paint". What paint? What game are we playing again you fecking moron?

Firstly Dwayne - you idiot - nothing is "unbelievable" in the first round of the NAB Cup. It's the pre-season competition, nothing more, nothing less.

It's not often I wish harm on people, but a season-long bout of laryngitis would improve commentary standards immeasurably.

Height? Build? Athleticism? Rookie list?

There are a number of similarities without jumping straight to the colour of their skin you know.

Dude im black.. Well thats a fair stretch.. Im half White and Half Black, and theres nothing racist about the comparison.. maybe a tad ignorant.. but not racist.. but youre sugar coating it if you think its his height and build that made him draw the conclusion

The TV commentary standards are so low these days. I have also watched quite a bit of NFL this year, and I can see what a high standard is supposed to sound like. There's a professionalism and elocution there that some of our commentators could learn from. There are still a few knuckleheads there for a bit of excitement and to provide a "player's" point of view, but the actual game calling is outstanding.

I watch a bit of English soccer, and the chasm in quality of calling between codes is embarrassing. They have impartial, objective analysis, we have ocker, moronic, screaming, biased imbeciles.

What about three straight Copeland trophies, and all but one player of the year award in the game last year would lead you to believe we have anyone better than Swan right now?

I still think Pendlebury is better than Swan even if he doesn't get the recognition.

So are lots and lots of white players. But I don't see any comparisons there.

Let's face it, given that they are both black and sorta tall, there is a perception by people like Dwayne that they are the same person.

You know how all Chinese/Black people look alike?

Racist.

Zeph Skinner is coming to getcha!

Now there is a more apt comparison to Jurrah.

From a remote community, relocated to Melbourne. Both key forwards, not a ruckman like Daw is.
