MOST people analysing the 2012 fixture would have sympathised with GWS ahead of their round 10 assignment.

The Giants were scheduled for their first trip to Simonds Stadium to take on the reigning premiers Geelong in what could have been one of the whitewashes of the season.

But instead the AFL's newest team took the challenge up to the Cats, even drawing level with them at quarter-time and half-time before fading in the second half.

So impressive was the performance that solidly built midfielder Dylan Shiel earned the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for round 10.

Shiel had 21 touches and laid five tackles to become the fourth Giant after Jeremy Cameron, Tomas Bugg and Stephen Coniglio to be nominated for the award.

He said he was proud of the way his team performed in one of footy's toughest tasks.

"When the fixture came out at the start of the year we saw we drew them at Simonds Stadium and I remember thinking that will probably be the hardest game we ever play," Shiel told AFL.com.au.

Great work. Well deserved. He's gotten better with each game he's played.

Do you think it is a coincidence that 3 of the 4 rising star noms did not come through the draft but have had 12 months with the club?

Ichabod,

Not at all. Last years crop of kids also had, in my opinion, a better standard of competition in the NEAFL than in the TAC Cup.

This is a clue for how well Jonathon Patton will do as compared to Jeremy Cameron as well ...

i think sheils has been real good all year. i also think the better 17/18 year olds learn quite fast in neafl comp as they play on bigger bodies, where as lot of the other states have stronger 18s comps but the better players don't get tested. last week some of the big name wa players did not look that good.

Great work by Shiel, and absolutely well deserved.

As for your question, Ichabod, I do think that it is a mere coincedence.

In my opinion, these young players who represented the Giants in 2011 in the NEAFL are such guns and quality players that they would have got the rising star nominations no matter which team they were playing for.

Just because they weren't taken as high draft picks a lot of people underrate them, but they will be absolute stars of the game.

Treloar's a good 'un as well. As well as my unwavering support for the Giant Ginger of the AFL, I'll give you guys a roughie to consider: Liam Sumner. Very good kid with a fantastic attitude, and he'll be hungry as hell to get going once he's off rehab and back on the paddock.

When all's set and done though, a certain #3 is going to be incredibly hard to top when the votes finally get cast at the end of the year.

What is great about our recruiting is we actually have a few years of players go come on. Obviously the NEAFL boys have been looking great this year. And a couple of drafted players as well. Next year some more of the draftees will come on strong, guys like Tomlinson, Tyson and Sumner. I think then the following year you will see guys like WHE, Buntine and Haynes pushing for best 18. By drafting players a range of player types, it means there will continue to be a trickle of players pushing to be in the team over the next few years. Drafting and trading over the next couple of years will not be quite as important, I think.

Perhaps we may soon see a positional change for Dylan Shiel. I don't think Mark Williams will have him as an inside player, especially now that he is dating his daughter :)
