Competitions Eagles Board Mock Draft

I think Gold Coast need to pick a tall to finish off the draft, covering for the loss of Dixon - I'm not so big on a few of the recycled players so I am going to give a guy who has fantastic attributes a shot. He has a great set of hands, a massive kick and is built like the proverbial house constructed entirely of bricks. He has an excellent WAFL season and deserves a shot at the big time. Welcome to the Suns, MARCUS ADAMS.

He will provide good depth especially down back, but is capable of swinging forward if required. Is ready to go from day dot. A lot will depend on where MayDay plays.

Carlton will take Blake Hardwick

Hardwick hits packs hard and is hard to tackle when he gets rolling he kicks bags of goals 12 ,10, 8 not too bad and a dead eye dick with 45 goals 14 behinds ,He appeals as good value for a 4th rd pick .

th

Blake Hardwick Eastern Ranges
Height: 181 cm
Weight: 78 kg
Position: Small forward/inside midfielder
Strengths: Overhead marking, physicality, crumbing, set shot kicking
Weaknesses: Consistency, field kicking, finding the football
Player comparison: Mitch Hahn
First year projection: Immediate impact

Kicking: Above average
Marking: Elite
Endurance: Average
Speed: Average

Blake Hardwick would have teams salivating over him if he was a key forward. He’s got the mullet, he’s a physical beast and he plays like Jason Dunstall.

Hardwick plays out of the goal square, where he beats his opponents consistently on the lead. He’s got some nice acceleration off the mark, but his top speed isn’t terrific. He’s a smart small forward, who knows exactly where to lead.

Marking is Hardwick’s strong suit. He’s a sure bet to take a mark on the lead, but he’s also equally adept overhead and in contested situations. He usually takes around five marks per game, and one or two of those will always be contested.

Hardwick is the leading goal kicker in the TAC Cup. He has kicked bags of 12, 10 and eight this year and really picked up the slack since Sam Weideman has missed through injury. He’s a wonderful set shot kicker, kicking 45.14 so far. He doesn’t mind if he’s 50 metres out on a tight angle, as his routine is the same for every kick. It’s technically sound and he stays cool under pressure.

He’s not as great in terms of field kicking. He’s started developing an inside midfield role, and he’s struggled as a distributor by foot when he has drifted into the centre. That’s more of an issue with time, space and getting used to a new role.

Hardwick isn’t just a shorter guy posing as a key forward. He’s excellent when the ball hits the deck, as his speed and strength allows him to break free from packs and he cannot be taken down in a tackle. He relies more on his smarts and strength when it comes to crumbing, rather than natural freakish ability. He’s a good snap for goal, but not the type to kick miraculous goals.

He’s a bruiser in every sense of the word. He hits the pack courageously and often takes others down with him. He’s got great core strength and he could easily play from round one next year.

The issue with Hardwick is whether or not he can end up like a Mark LeCras, or if he will be a Matthew Little type – that is, one who dominates weaker opponents but can’t have much of an impact at AFL.

He’s got the physical tools to become a decent inside midfielder but he hasn’t really got the tank as of yet. He looks like he’s going to be one of the steals of the draft. We’ve seen with Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs that unconventional forward lines can work quite well.

The rest of the league still has an issue with height bias which should see Hardwick slip, but he’s got plenty to offer.

His best option is to just break down the door for selection based on pure weight of goals. He’s probably not going to be a star at AFL level, but he’s got the opportunity to become a valuable role player.

With pick 56 West Coast take Stephen Tahana

Very surprised both he and Hardwick got so far, and thanks to eagles rule for narrowing down my selections, this was the easiest so far.

Tahana was recognized as an elite small defender in his underage year, with his combination of speed, agility and defensive mindset allowing him to completely lock down nippy small forwards.

This year he's started to develop a more aggressive mindset, pushing up through the midfield, using his skills on the inside to win a bit of his own ball and generally used the ball well.

What really appeals to me about Tahana is his versatility, which has been a predominant factor in all my draftees. He's got the ability to lock down dangerous small forwards, and that's the one area in defence I think we lack in. You can also never have too many solid options rotating through the midfield, and he's just got a bit of flare and x-factor I feel we lack a little.

I was close to picking him at 39.. Even thought that was a bit of a bargain

I was considering picking him up with my second pick ahaha. It seems like his stocks have plummeted recently. Looking at the AFL Draft Machine, he's a smokey, not even 60-99. I'd be stoked if we could actually pick him up with our third.

What was your strategy for taking WCE picks is it just best available or targeting needs ?
It seems like as a whole we've picked up 3 HBF players ? Which individually they were great picks and the Rueben Williams pick is a brilliant steal .

Honestly I forgot about the William pick, was quite pleased with that, but the thing about all my picks are that they're versatile. My strategy was purely going best available, but if I had two or three selections I found hard to separate I went the prospect that probably filled a need more than anything.

Cole I see as a half back flank who will play primarily through the midfield, kind of like a Sam Mitchell, who can play inside/outside and rotate through half back, so he's not primarily a half back in my opinion.

Tahana I see as a lockdown small defender rather than a half back, and I also see him rotating through the midfield, and even used in negating roles.

William I see as a half back flanker who will push up on a wing to provide run and carry, like Lewis Jetta was used this year.

So while those picks can all play in defense, that's not necessarily the position I see them playing in predominantly, it just happens they can all rotate back.

Pick 57 - Collingwood to select Michael Hartley

upload_2015-11-12_11-7-41.png

A mature recruit at 22, Hartley stands at 195cm and 100kg. He is a genuine KPD that is ready to start paying now. He is an interesting proposition. From NWS, he was originally on the Pies rookie list taken in 2011 and was delisted 2 years ago. Attributes is that he reads the ball well, great leap and can play the KPD well - though needing more aerobically but what he has is passable. Since leaving Pieland, he has played VFL with Coburg and has now come to terms with his body and is showing the right signs. His downside was his later development (not unusual with talls) and his start at Collingwood was riddled with niggles. He had a really good run at it in 2015 and looks to have his body in good shape. In 2015 he showed that he can cope and hold quality AFL talent Key Forwards/Rucks like Vickery, Daw, McBean, etc. With his height, he is more than able to take the resting ruckman who will be more prevalent up front with the new rotation rules.

Why would Collingwood take him? There are at least 2 clubs looking (went to the Victoria state combine meaning at least 2 requested) and there is a real drop off in KPP players at this range. Anything at 18 you take will mean another 3 years before ready to play. White is not the answer for Collingwood. They need Reed up front and not down back and Brown & Frost need backup. Their midfield has been nicely refurbished and hence I think they are needing more in depth with their KPP.

With the recruiting/trading that the Pies have done, I believe they think that they are close to a tilt at the flag and hence Hartley offers more immediate support and not a long term project.

If Tahana was still available I would of taken Tahana (good pick by the way Aceknuckles) and I was going to run the risk with Hartley and take him later. That said, I see Doggies and Sydney as being in the market for a KPD like Hartley.

Is a rookie pick worth anything in terms of points/can you trade future rookie picks?
