a bit of a guide on how they may structure the 2 test series in sri lanka

View attachment 2196708
Great graphic.
Who would have kept in 92 had Healy gone down on the morning of a test?
Same in 2011 - Warner? Marsh?

Always the discussion if you take the best three spinners or if you want different types.
Lyon, Murphy and Kuhnemann are the three I'd take.

1 Konstas
2 Khawaja
3 Labuschagne
4 Smith
5 Head
6 Carey
7 Webster
8 Starc
9 Lyon
10 Murphy
11 Hazlewood

12 Boland
13 Handsome
14 Inglis
15 Patterson
Thats my starting 11 for the 1st test, obviously Captain Pat won't be there.

I honestly think this should Usman last series, I actually would be in favour if he hang up the bat at the end of the India series and bring in Henry Hunt

What is the number of the squad? Is it always a traditional squad of 16 ?

we took 16 last time which was also a 2 test series (but this was because in case of COVID close contacts etc).

i'd imagine 15 or 16, going off previous squads.

then we play a one off ODI which has been added to the itenary which is essentially a warm up game before the champions trophy in pakistan. so the ODI squad will meet up in sri lanka, then go into camp and straight to the champions trophy.

So two tests, 29th Jan-2nd Feb, 6th-10th Feb. Both at Galle, which is historically a venue dominated by spin. Depending on the result of Sydney the WTC might still need confirming. Anyway, what I think we should do:

Batters: Konstas, Head, Labuschagne, Smith, Handscomb, Webster
Keepers: Carey, Inglis (if fit), Philippe (if not)
Seamers: Boland, Cummins (if he flies out), Starc (if Cummins stays home for the birth of his kid)
Spinners: Lyon, Murphy, Kuhnemann, Swepson/Tanveer Sangha

Debating whether or not another bat is required, if so I'd bring Henry Hunt over as a reserve opener. If Cummins doesn't go I'm guessing Smith will be captain but wouldn't mind seeing Head take it. Side I'd play:

Konstas
Head
Labuschagne
Smith
Handscomb
Webster
Carey (+)
Cummins/Starc
Lyon
Murphy
Kuhnemann

Inglis will tour if fit. We don't know whether or not that will be the case.

Rocchiccioli is behind Lyon and Murphy as off spinners, and after that you need to add variety so Kuhnemann and Sangha/Swepson go ahead of him. Even if you argue that he's level with Murphy, he's too similar stylistically to Lyon that Murphy jumps ahead of him anyway.

Jhye is better off playing Shield cricket, something you've bitched about for the past 3 summers, so I'm surprised you want him to go on tour to carry drinks instead of playing for WA.

Connolly has 4 FC games. Which batter would you not have in the squad ahead of him? I'd have Hunt, Cartwright, McSweeney all definitely ahead without much thought of those that missed out.

probably not - these 1-2 week injuries, somehow turn out to be longer.

in any case , if the side is going to be spin heavy (with or without cummins) , we've seen the likes of boland are up to it.
I can see the bowling line up being one seamer, Webster and three spinners.

If we were smart. Sri Lanka generally go with something similar except with Dhananjaya as their fifth so they go two seamers.

Inglis will be fit he is being rested from the BBL ..its only a low grade tear and I expect him to make his test debut in Sri ranks..thats what I have heard from state circles over here in the West

Rocco behind Murphy really Eth????.....yes behind Lyon but he is on par with Murphy

Jhye better off playing shield cricket maybe but he was just made part of the test squad.....I have been bitching about the management of Jhye..by cricket Australia and management of bowlers in the shield....thats what pissed me off not jhye

Connoly has only 4 fc class correct and so has Konstas and he is playing test cricket..could be good for young Cooper to be around the squad

In regards to Handscomb he shouldn't even be in the squad based upon his recent tours of the sub continent would rather McSweeney and Handscomb is not exactly tearing it up in the shield this year..1 ton...ave 47 would rather Patterson oh Cartwright ave 53 but F**k him every one forgets about poor Hilton

Inglis might be fit. We don't know for sure until the squad is announced.

Okay, for argument's sake, let's say he's level with Murphy. What about my other point? Rocc is stylistically very similar to Lyon as far as over spin, quick through the air and doesn't get a lot of turn. Murphy is more round arm, slower and gets the ball to turn more than the other two, which is a better pairing for Lyon. So even if you think they're level in terms of quality, Murphy is ahead based on that.

Yeah, in Australia where you play three quicks. Not in Sri Lanka where you probably only play one plus Webster, so really only need two of Starc/Boland/Cummins/Hazlewood anyway.

Konstas had 11 before his test debut. Not to mention the fact that he had played the entire season up until he got selected. Instead of two matches. Better for him to play cricket instead of running drinks. He's been in and around the Australian squad through the ODI/T20 squads anyway.

You mean his recent tours where he was 3rd and 4th on the runs list for us? Also the same Peter Handscomb who has the 5th most FC runs this year, the most 50+ scores in FC cricket this year? Yeah okay. He's in good form, we know he's one of the best players of spin in the country, so yeah, I'm happy to pick him, as are the selectors with the indication that he'll play due to being added to the squad as a sub fielder for this test. McSweeney got dropped and needs time in the Shield. Patterson needs to prove that his return isn't just a flash in the pan. Cartwright seemingly has his papers stamped.

If Handscomb was to play who would he replace in the top 6 from the current XI? I can only think of Khawaja if gets axed or retires.

Khawaja
Head
Labuschagne
Smith
Handscomb/McSweeney
Carey
Webster
Starc
Lyon
Khunneman
Boland

Murphy
Konstas
Hazlewood
Handscomb/Mcsweeney

Usman, Marnus and Smith all need to be there as our best players of spin, and Head opening meets Konstas misses out just for SL. Not sold on Handscomb but the selectors have indicated he’s going so I’d expect him to bat at 5.

1. Zero chance of McSweeney touring.
2. That's the worst attempt at spelling Kuhnemann I've seen.

Even if UK retires we still shouldn't be picking Handscomb. Is there really no one else? He is not international standard.

Cooper Connolly is a jet, hoping we see him in SL.

i floated the idea him at 6 and beau at 8.. it's a free hit tour and will be turning day 1 so nothing to lose really

add to that i can't see having Konstas at the top happening you just can't have him opening at this stage. rather he play out the state long form and learn his game
