Test (Early) Sri Lanka tour squad predictions

Like I said a couple of posts ago, I’d be tempted to play Richardson!

But Boland bowling test overs to have him cherry ripe for the WTC final is the priority. If Boland doesn’t need to bowl those over then very happy for Richo to get the gig.
Long time between Sri Lanka & WTC Final and doesn’t matter who the fast bowler is - you’re not getting many match overs in SL

There is but I’m comfortable if he was the only quick playing Boland would bowl enough overs in SL. I wouldn’t want him over there just to carry the drinks, better off playing Shield.

As something slightly cheeky, do we maybe give Smith a bit of a break for this tour and then have his next test as the WTC

Bringing up 10,000 test runs at Lord's seem liked it would be the next best venue to doing so on ones home deck
To be a fly on the wall when that is suggested to Smith.

As romantic as this sounds - and it would be pretty awesome for it to happen at Lords... cricket has a way of catching up with people being tricky

Smith probably get a King Pair if they did this

I think he'll likely retire after the Ashes, so will want to play as many matches as possible

Can’t see him retiring tbh. He’s got nothing else but cricket.

Australia is set to go heavy on finger spin in Sri Lanka with Todd Murphy and Matt Kuhnemann both receiving Test recalls.

Meanwhile Glenn Maxwell’s dream of a Test return will be all but extinguished if he misses the cut on Thursday as national selectors were urged to strike a balance between youth and experience for the tour.

Reading the article, it sounds like that last spot could come down to Maxwell or Connolly

I don't get why Maxwell and Handscombe are even in the conversation. The only reason for Handscombe to go was if Inglis wasn't fit and it was seen as the best way of covering a batsman and a keeper.

Because he plays well in the sub continent and is one of the form batsmen in first class cricket over the last 12 months. Although averaging 48 in Australia, he’s unlucky to be a sub continent only selection.

With McSweeney in, maybe something has changed, can’t see them taking 2 spare batsmen + Inglis + spare all rounder. But Handscomb was brought in to the squad in Sydney so it’s not just Victorian media made up stories like one poster claimed…

McSweeney in the squad from what I have been reading around the place. Now that these tests don't matter in regards to qualifying for the WTC I'd much rather see us back him in the middle order than see Handscomb playing again. Can't say I've ever understood the hype around Handscomb's ability to spin, perhaps above average in comparison to other but not so spectacular that he should be a must pick at 33. Seems a pretty short sighted choice to me.

McSweeney made 54 and 127no against a NSW lineup featuring Lyon this season, that's all I need to know to give him a crack over Handscomb if it does come down to a choice between those two.

Why we’d draft in anyone over the age of 30 for this tour is beyond me. Two tests to have a look at who is going to regenerate the side after the WTC final and Ashes.

Over the next few years I'd assume a lot of Khawaja, Smith, Carey, Starc, Boland, Lyon and Hazlewood will be phased out of the team.

Having already qualified for the WTC Final, this seems to me to be a great opportunity to give the next wave of players a go at highest level.

Assume the team from the SCG might look something like this in the not too distant future...

Hunt/Renshaw
Konstas
Labuschagne
Green
Head
Webster/McSweeney
Inglis
Cummins
Richardson
Johnson/Morris
Murphy

Connolly can't be far away, and it will be interesting to see how quickly they fast track the development of Weibgen and Peake.

Would love to see at least two of the above in the team for Sri Lanka. My picks would be Richardson and Murphy as bowlers, and McSweeney if they opt to open with head.

I thought Carey was 30.

Genuinely surprised to see he was 33. Feels like he only just entered the test arena and has 5 year left minimum.

I'm a big Inglis fan though, so happy for that transition to occur when necessary.

I'm also hoping Tim Ward from Tassie continues on with his current form, because that ever-reliable number 3 position needs some real pressure put on it over the next 12 months.
