That's right. It's wrong. And we've let it happen by putting her front of centre as a victim. I wonder before James Hird and Essendon were found guilty was there any chance they'd be left alone? I can remember some stinging criticism that Caro made about them before a guilty verdict was written. Again, public execution of a big name celebrity in a small industry. Just like it is here.

It's a serious issue because it's an easy and effective way to frame away any guilt or responsibility (even after you have been found guilty like Essendon; how much sympathy they are still receiving is sickening). And as you said when I misunderstood the point you were making, it distracts from actual cases and victims of such injustices, on two fronts. By building nothing huge, it makes huge issues look like nothing.

yes, it is a stretch, but isn't that more because it is a fairly 'hot topic' right now? national ad campaigns etc, and we even have a player not shaving for a year to raise awareness.

people will always stretch for things, but it wouldn't be the 'mean' or 'median' view of this debate, if there even is one.

i do think the timing of all this reflects the 'tin-ear' of eddie. he let his own frustrations overtake the position he is in, and the messages he should or should not be spreading. as a woman was the target here, that sucks in peripheral issues regarding women, a big one being domestic violence, and then the possibly too lax attitude towards it.

anyway, ive said previously that I believe a person can say something sexist without necessarily 'being a sexist', say something racist without 'being a racist', bully without 'being a bully' etc...

in this case, eddie has some form attacking caroline, often along things that seem to imply that her position and gender (black widow, perfumed scorpion) may have something to do with it.

lets say broadly there are 3 options:

1. eddie attacked caroline cause he hates women generally;
2. eddie attacked caroline cause he hates her journalistic attacks;
3. eddie attacked caroline cause he hates her journalistic attacks on him and coming from a reasonably 'powerful woman' makes it doubly tough to swallow.

in my opinion only, 1 is highly unlikely to be the case, 2 is certain, 3 is very possible.

eddie seems like a fairly old-school fella, and the kind who doesnt take finishing 2nd lightly. he has a history of belligerence. i dont think a sexism inspired take down is beyond him, but I don't necessarily believe he is a sexist generally.

no one but eddie knows his views on women and sexism. however, comments such as these are rarely, if ever, capable of neat categorization as driven by a certain thought process. im sure there is a lot about caroline that eddie hates, and whether or not sexism plays a part of it is definitely up for debate.

i personally doubt eddie is a 'woman-hater' though, but you also don't need to be to engage in casual implicit or explicit sexism.

Joking that people should donate money to drown a female journalist is not a "slip-up" - it's pure idiocy.

For me the issues isn't the issue; its the fact it's an issue. I know why it won't die down; and I'd never make such a complaint. I don't like things I see as a problem to quietly go away while we wait for the next non issue to come up. I'd rather attack the disease, not ride the symptom out.

Its the same reason why I would ban guns here in the US. No point in hoping and praying till it all goes away and then repeating myself when the next batch of people die. When there's an incident; speak up.

How can it be explained? If they were tried by the jury for bullying I could accept that. when it's new political correctness educating us on language and it's connection to DV I could try and learn something about it.
But when your arguing semantics on how a sentence was structured differently by a word, Shaws statement acceptable and Eddies not? Then I can only think a bunch of wannabe social intellects jumping on some media bandwagon to somehow show they are more intelligent then the general public because they "get" the difference between Eddies sentence and Shaws sentence. Totally contradicts Gillans reason for calling them out in the first place.
