McKernan signed on at Tulla today - news out on their socials!

Definitely big news and adds to the already strong recruitment that's happened over the last month or two.

The big question regarding McKernan - He's gonna be 35 and has basically had the last two years out of the game. The rest could prove to be a good thing or a bad thing. If he can re-capture his form from 2022 then he'll be a huge asset.

Overall the recruiting/retention of players at Tulla has been great with a good mix of youth and experience.

Bigger question is will Strathmore let him go?

Retention ? They’ve so far lost 14 players that played seniors this season, including 6 to Tulla’s favourite son’s new club Talbot.

Not quite. As far as I know there's only five heading to Talbot - Stephens, Sikora, Lang and Hind x 2.

Other than that, I only know of three other players who played seniors who are confirmed as not playing in 2025. I do suspect there may be one or two retirements though and those players who may be retiring didn't have much impact this year.

If you know of 14 players who have left then by all means name them but I don't think you could.

Also retention has been strong when you consider that the majority of younger players have all re-committed and so has the entire leadership group from last year. The three players who I regarded the best prospects for the future have all stayed on so that's what matters to me as a supporter.

I think the mix of youth and experience will be great for 2025.

Sikora, Stephens, Hind x 2, McCartney & Lang all Talbot.
As well as Jackson, Filipovic, Rowland, O’Dwyer, McCallum, Micallef, M.Watts, Long.

there’s ya 14

Fair enough and thanks for listing them all.

Half of the names mentioned had little impact on the senior team this year (despite being very good players in the 2's) and I'd also say that most teams in Div one lose about 14 players each year who had played at least one senior game.

At the end of 2022, Tulla lost about 22 players who had played seniors that year.

At the end of 2023 we also probably lost 14 players who had played at least one senior game (although that was due to many retirements, I only know of three players who transferred to another club).

Overall I'd still be happy with the retention of players as there's some future stars who have stayed on as well as the entire leadership group. Losing players like Jarrod Stephens and Tommy Jackson isn't great as they both played some very good footy this year and they're young guys. I'd be interested to know where Jackson is playing as I haven't heard anything.

Jackson gone to Lancefield

McCartney + watts both played 3 senior games- before both moving interstate, so really only lost depth players

Lang- 9 games so other than experience/ leadership and him paying Sikora are they really losing much?

Rowland only 4 senior games and was never going to get a game with the ruckman coming from strathmore

Odwyer great player back in the day, but is past it

Hinds both played never really locked in there spot

So out of that list of 14 only Stephens, McCallum, Dom micallef, Jackson, flip and long really hurt.

The rest your replacing with guys who are most likely not breaking the bank, are younger and have premier experience

Actually agree, I was only initially replying about the rentention. It should be the perfect clean out for Tulla and new coach to build the next contending group. The list was way too old last season and it showed on the win/loss and how many games they played where key players didn’t get past quarter time. With McKernan & Weightman deep if they can win at least as much of the footy as the opposition they should be hard to beat.

Tullamarine should be finals contenders now, If they get some luck on the injury side of things and a decent draw I don’t see why they can’t be playing finals. A fit Weightman could be very hard to stop especially with him not getting the best defender every week and form all reports he is as fit as his been in a long time. There looks to be some healthy competition for the goal kicking Award this upcoming season !

Well yes that's kinda what I was trying to say all along but I didn't want to point it out in such detail.

On the other hand, if you look at the players who have stuck around, many of them played almost every senior game and have a much better future than certain others who are way past it.

Flippa also didn't play that much senior footy this year and tbh I don't think he's confirmed as having left just yet.

Steve Mac is a great player but just like last year was injury prone and only managed a handful of games.

So really it's just Micallef, Stephens, Jackson and Long who will leave a hole but I am sure every side loses a few key players at the end of each season.

Overall the depth at Tulla is looking stronger than it's been for a while and yes I think we will play finals.
