EDFL Div 2 2020

Could we see Keilor Park play finals in season 2020 which would be a remarkable turnaround. Picked up some handy div2 players that played in EKs div2 premiership side in 2016. It’s definitely possible I think with some luck. Got 1 or 2 more to be announced as well I hear..

Will definitely be a competitive side. if they were to make finals, having Jacana scheduled last round (assuming they don’t have a team and it becomes a bye) it could work in their favor for injured players to gain an extra weeks rest

Just stating a FACT - that the Financials were left off the Annual report - Hence , in business, why it is actually called an Annual report, to report on all activities including Financials as in previous years, Just one little paragraph from the CEO mentioning the loss but not so bad over a 2 year period ! Come on - surely we deserve better than that and should know where all the money has been spent at the very least considering a lot of the revenue is generated from the clubs within the association !
I assumed (wrongly) that you were referring to unfinancial clubs.
How did the EDFL explain the substantial loss?

IMO - Realistically, if they win 5-6 Games( not including Jacana), they should be doing cartwheels from where they were as a club. To front up week in-week out knowing that you were going to get belted by 30+ Goals each week is commendable. I am not sure how many stuck around for this year but they have brought in 25+ players which membership + spend around the club alone is a massive positive. They will have reserves ,so the feel for the hard working volunteers (which are at all clubs) and what they are doing with their Juniors & Womens teams should provide some great satisfaction and reward for the year ahead - no matter what happens.

On another note - Another closure at Head office today - They must be working on that detail strategy & reviewing all the Big footy forum comments !!!

They claim they had to put more staff on to implement the strategy plans - Just one little paragraph from the CEO. That just invites a closer look when you don't reveal information. The presidents should be asking questions and hold them to account. EDFL don't hesitate to dish out fines and understand it is not easy to run a competition, BUT when you put your hand up and state that you are the best person for the job ( or THE ONLY ONE LEFT) then you must Deliver !!

I’ve seen the financials nothing to worry about, expenditure increased due to what was stated above, sponsorship down 25k.

Agree that that they should’ve been included. It is poor governance to not include them

Issue is that who got voted in was much of the same... definitely a boys club!!

I drove past early about 7:30-8 and seen a board member rock up and open up with his laptop and edfl shirt.. maybe a closed door office this time of the year after the annual report..

Edfl loses money and passes on to the clubs by upping fees..... typical....

Hey chops,
Actually just took a closer look...
Making a loss is not the end of the world as long as it is reasonable and can be justified. I’d suggest that FY 18 was a poor benchmark to compare against especially with S&W and sponsorship.
Agree its not ideal but look at them before you throw out barbs champ!
I’m not an EDFL staffer either, just one that sees it for what it is, and not jumping at shadows.... ps buy yourself a mirror for Christmas

So with 2 extra staff , we are happy that the sponsorship dropped off , happy that we paid 2 more staff however with 2018 we had 2 less and ran the comp at $130k profit and the whole comp ran along smoothly , in 2019 we had extra teams and clubs to make money from. Outlay on finals blew out , why, a grant was returned to the state government for a scoreboard , why , why didnt we get a scoreboard at Windy Hill, the taping of games cost the EDFL extra, let the clubs pay for it themself .
With 2 extra staff we were able to muck up the points for clubs, let clubs play with overage kids, let clubs play with incorrect numbers on the field at senior level , let players re enter the comp who have accumulated 16 weeks , allow clubs to play without penalty who were unfinancial, etc etc etc.
Losing that amount is not the end of the world because its not your money.

Great Post - Could probably add a few more things, But at the end of the day, if running a business and your revenue exceeds $2.5m and you have reported a loss - It should be pretty clear on "what happens next" !!!

Poor old Ginger might have walked past the Royal and caught a quick glimpse of himself in the reflection from the grubby windows coz he has gone real quiet

exactly right. Making a loss may be explainable, never justifiable. If you know your business well and budgeted properly stay the course taking into consideration the bumps you should still navigate your way to budget. I can’t imagine they budgeted to lose money. This is where the stakeholders need be active And demanding of the board. If not I’d imagine complicity of sorts.

On another note do we have any early pre christmas predictions for 2020 ladder? most recruiting would have been done, bar the one or two surprises and walk in that take place in Jan and Feb.

Moonee valley (close to a lock for top spot)
Coburg districts
Then the 3rd and 4th spots I just can’t pick. Oak Park, Burnside and KP to play out for 3rd and 4th for me.
I know hadfield have recrutied a couple handy players but still think they will struggle with there bottom 6-8 players

Don’t rate the other teams? NS, ES and Jacana?

I wonder if KPs new coach will try and get big Phillpot across. He would be handy in div2 I reckon. I did hear he was spoken to and will make a decision post Xmas. The big fella will need to decide if his still keen to run around at a reduced rate. Probably stay retired but who knows. Definitely struggled last season at div1 before hanging them up but in div2 would be a great asset.

how confident are we Jacana will get a side? If so I can’t see them beating even Northern who will be a very young team, younger than ES of a couple of seasons ago. Easts will be good and will finish above KP by my reckoning.

Can’t shed any further light on this but have been told he has been training at EK

Nah chops all good from my end. Agree that it’s never good to post a loss and there are certainly ways to navigate your way through it.

Maybe the EDFL should sell off some of its Assets ( Factory) to self fund the loss rather than going to the clubs to raise revenue. Even though the EDFL made a massive loss in 2019 it still has a very healthy balance sheet to draw back on.

selling off assets would be the last thing you would do To fund a loss from a previous year. Better still look at operating costs, slash and or control those and think outside the square and look at other means of raising revenue. Clubs are slugged enough in my opinion, I think the EDFL needs to become more disciplined in its financial management as a start. Leaving money in the bank and not reinvesting in the competition would be of concern. The factory need to yield income.
