I am very excited about 2020 Draft as there are a number of different types this year and that always creates interest. Last years draft was very light on talls particularly key position players and this year has plenty.

The area I want to create a conversation on though is mid fielders – as per previous posts I have always been a big believer in bottom age form as a indicator of whether a player can transfer to open age football well. The 2019 draft has highlighted this again very clearly as following players all had excellent first years in AFL after playing Nationals in bottom age year. In this bizarre year I was thinking that bottom age form is now more important than ever (particularly Vics) and so I thought I would compare mid/forwards of 2018 & 2019 Nationals on this metric only. Using just disposals and goals per game I think highlights significant differences between the 2019 draft group and potential 2020 group. But if you expand this back further to 2016 & 2017 there is consistency in this data.

2019 Draft (their 2018 Nationals form below):

Matt Rowell 19.5 disposals per game/0 goals (5 games in AFL year one*)

Noah Anderson 18.0 / 2.0 goals (17 games)

Tom Green 17.3 / 1.0 goals (6 games)

Caleb Serong 17.0 / 0.7 goals (14 games)

Jack Mahony 17.0/ 1.5 goals (10 games*)

*Rowell & Mahony had injuries that affected games played.

2020 Draft (their 2019 Nationals form below):

Elijah Hollands 13.5 disposals per game / 0.5 goals

Will Phillips 12.0 / 0 goals

Errol Gulden 15.0 / 0.7 goals

Braeden Campbell 12.0 / 0 goals

Luke Edwards 18.8 / 0.3 goals

Nathan O’Driscoll 16.0 / 0 goals

Seems a significant difference between the 2 years with the 2019 crop now having successful 2020 AFL seasons compared to 2020 having reduced or no game time and at high level. I am suggesting that 2020 mid field top end quality may not be there compared to previous seasons. That said I am ‘big’ on Elijah Hollands as I believe the upside is very exciting – seems the perfect fit for either North Melbourne, Sydney or Hawthorn assuming Adelaide go with tall.

Yeah Poulter and Burgoyne would be my bests from Henley so far
Interested in your impressions on Tariek Newchurch's game. Is it just me or is he becoming a serial coaster picking and choosing what contests he goes hard at?

I don’t think we will pick him up with the reduced list sizes now

He has the ability to win games of footy but like most flashy players his game can be perceived like that. Not unlike Izak Rankine.

He does have huge talent and is worth taking in the main draft but I’d only expect a high bid from a club that is confident they can get the most out of his talent

He was definitely picking and choosing today, still have a few big contests in the last that nearly swung the game. Almost chased down Borlase which could’ve swung the game.

eDPS who do you expect the bombers to look at now considering they have the 6th pick something they wouldn't have expected coming into the season?

It’s pretty hard to say this early on with no clear cut top 10 at this stage. Essendon need to address a lot of issues but they might just take the best midfielder available whether that’s Phillips or Bruhn. Personally I’d look at O’Driscoll but seems I’m in the minority for having him in that top 10 discussion.

Do you see Dangerfield type talent with O’Driscoll?

Not necessarily similar playing style, but a big mid with power and speed who can run through or burst from a contest?

He might not be as polished as Phillips or Bruhn, but I feel he could have a bigger impact when he matures.

Nah I would say he would play a similar role to the likes of Greenwood, good for plenty of clearances and tackles per game and can take some marks around the ground aswell. He will start on a wing I reckon and then move into the midfield once he puts on more bulk

Also where’s your latest Phantom Draft?

Do you think O'Driscoll could be a good match with North? Maybe the big bodied defensive mid that makes space for the likes of Simpkin, LDU, Scott and Thomas?
