This game used to be great, but this will draw a lower crowd than last year. Unless they are making good cash from TV rights, the end is near.

Agreed the games have gone beyond their peak and are now on the decline.

Similar to the Slowdowns in SA. In the mid 2000's, you got 35,000+ packing Adelaide Oval (pre-redevelopment), often getting more than the SANFL Grand Final to the games and they were a good day out. The last one got less than 2,000 people into Norwood Oval, and wasn't even televised before they put the concept out of it's misery.

Live coverage tonight from 7.30pm on Channel 7 and Fox Footy.

WHAT IS EJX?
The 2019 E.J. Whitten Legends Game will be played under ‘EJX’ rules, inspired by AFLX.
It will be played across four quarters lasting 15 minutes, with 10-point supergoals from outside the launch zone.
There will also be ‘X-factor moments’ including celebrity Power Players, who will be introduced at the 10-minute mark of each quarter and are able to score double points for their team.

Does anyone feel like this game was more fun and interesting (and more of a "draw", although I could be wrong) when it was limited to fat older footballers having a laugh and taking the piss? Seems like it's too much of a competition now for more recently retired players who are still in shape and can't quite let it go. I'd rather see the Andrew Jarman types running around again (I may be biased, as he's one of my favourite footballers ever), than guys like Matthew Boyd who are only a year or two back from retirement, and weren't really colourful characters or legends of the game in the first place.

Perhaps a rule of being 40+ years of age might be useful? Or do people feel like that part of it has run its race, and the joke's over, and they actually want to see a semi-competitive, skillful outing? Does wanting to see fat old blokes occasion a heart attack present an insurance issue, and go against the message of men's health being promoted by the event?

I also feel like this should be played at Whitten Oval each year. Would provide a proper footy oval with lights, but wouldn't have the "empty" look for TV that Marvel Stadium has had in the past, too.
