West coast have been my safest same game multi all year. A combination of Yeo, sheuy, gaff and sheed 25 or more and then usually 2 or 3 of rioli, Ryan, cripps and Allan anytime goal scorers tells me this is a well spread side that knows their strengths. If we bring our man on man, high pressure footy I think we can push them.

If we can convert our forward entries early and put scoreboard pressure on we'll be right in it

Was up in the stands there that night living in Perth at the time & kept expecting them to come at us, but Hird ensured it never happened.

Would’ve been in his top 3 games

Yep...there were so many of those games from him. He’d just roam and run and do what he wanted without any apparent tag or opponent.

Just a Hird disposal every 3 minutes.

Was just normal stuff back then.

My WC mate says Kennedy has carried injuries all season. Can not bend down to balls below his knees and struggles to run. Play Hooker on him and could turn this contest in to a positive for us. Ambrose/Hurley to Darling.

Be funny if they were one out and the ball hit the deck, if might stay down there til reinforcements arrive to pick it up...

I feel like our game style leads us to either losing big or winning small, and nothing inbetween. It sucks because we never seem to get full reward on the board for our periods of dominance, never kills games off. Then if the opponent adjusts, which they usually do if they outcoach us... we end up with backs to the wall trying to maintain the risky style in the face of constant pressure. Most other clubs are able to garner a lead, then switch to safe mode and hold it.

Having said that, ive got a strange feeling of confidence this week, despite the last time we met i do think we match up well against them, in style and in personnel. I genuinely think our speed worries them, and they are not a huge constested team which means we can break even there at least.

Obviously the killer is bombing high into their defenders, are we smart enough to not bail out like to the top of the square liek we always do in panic?

I second a post earler which suggested Ambrose take Darling then maybe make McGovern 'earn' his first few intercept marks, might think twice about putting his head in the hole. Plus we already owe him for last time when he dumped old mate into the fence...

100%. The Brisbane game was one of the few we have shown the signs of being a really good side - controlling the tempo when things weren't going our way and absorbing the pressure with little scoreboard damage til momentum shifted back in our favour again. It's the only way to win 3-4 games in a finals series.

SEN reporting that Josh Kennedy has hurt his knee in training this morning...
poor guy, really hope he gets up in time for the weekend.

its why as an essendon fan you can never relax when ahead, no matter by how much. ..and why you cant get life insurance...

even when up we are still playing the risky style of football that you need to play to try get back into games.. its a very weird dynamic.

In soccer, when you are chasing a game and you play all guns blazing you invariably get scored on over the back, its all the same, just different codes.

the vfl seem to have inherited it too. We can come from behind and win but not hold a lead.

I said that Ambrose take Darling and Brown for McGovern. Brown’s endurance running can make McG work although he will clearly try and mark grass like the Tigers defence do. If he doesn’t go with Brown then we must be prepared to use Brown going forward. Barrass is in shocking form so we can exploit that as long as we keep it away from McG. We can hold Kennedy and if he’s inj all the better. Their mids are our issue.

When we smacked them over the the other year Brown might have kicked 5 for memory, (memory could be hazy) maybe played his best game for the club, just used his tank to lead up at the ball, doubt gov had the fortitude or the structure didnt want him to follow.

Brown is the player to try but we’ll also need workarounds cause WC are not going to allow McG to be dragged too far OOP. If he lets Brown go and they have another player pick him up we must divert away from McG and ensure that another of our fwds go to him. If Brown is allowed to get off the chain then we hit him up every time.
