Because the culture is sick. It’s always been said that “any publicity is good publicity” but it’s never been true in the way that it is now. Attention is now an unparalleled social currency. Get everyone talking about you at any cost, and hell, actual currency (money) will probably follow.
He did it for the headlines. He did it for sport. For the fun of it.
At the end of the day, putting shitty things out into the world for money and attention is sick. Certain people have made this into an art form. It’s to make you sick, and sicken us all further.

The 'autistic' part is only something you've adopted after seeing someone else use it to explain/excuse the actions.
He's the richest man in the world. And owns one of the largest social media platforms in the world.
What's he done to impactfully offset this 'mistake'?

What's the down side?
More people are defending Musk now, than they had for the previous 2 weeks.
Nothing negatively impacting him will come of it, so what's the down side?
The upside is the love and affection he is receiving from the people he upset with the H-1B visas stuff.
More people are defending and supporting Musk now, than they were before that.
He's gone from 'cringelord' back to 'edgelord'.
What's the downside from his actions?
If you did something that had all the neo-Nazis in the world applauding you for it. How would you respond, regardless of being 'awkward' or 'autistic'?
How would you respond to emboldening all the far-right extremists in the US?
Why would you put any time or effort into defending this, let alone attacking people questioning it?
Look, I'm not really seeing it that way but trolling is the most obvious explanation other than awkwardness afaic.

Musk sparked outcry this week with his own tweets responding to a user who accused Jews of hating white people and professing indifference to antisemitism. “You have said the actual truth,” Musk tweeted in a reply Wednesday.
Musk has faced accusations of tolerating antisemitic messages on the platform since purchasing it last year, and the content on X has gained increased scrutiny since the war between Israel and Hamas began.
The head of the Anti-Defamation League also hit back at Musk’s tweets this week, in the latest clash between the prominent Jewish civil-rights organization and the billionaire businessman.
“At a time when antisemitism is exploding in America and surging around the world, it is indisputably dangerous to use one’s influence to validate and promote antisemitic theories,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said on X.
Musk also tweeted this week that he was “deeply offended by ADL’s messaging and any other groups who push de facto anti-white racism or anti-Asian racism or racism of any kind.”
The group has previously accused Musk of allowing antisemitism and hate speech to spread on the platform and amplifying the messages of neo-Nazis and white supremacists who want to ban the ADL.

When BBC Monitoring analysed over 1,100 previously banned X accounts that were reinstated under Elon Musk, it found that 190 of them were promoting hate and violence, including depictions of rape as well as abuse directed at women and the LGBT community.

Somewhere along the line he went from eccentric billionaire to full time meddling piece of shit. Apart from Trump himself I can’t think of anyone who has spent more time basking in this post-truth world he and people like him have created. Despite his ambiguous past, since his radicalisation I can only think of his influence as a purely bad thing.

Why wouldn’t he just simply apologise for any angst and show some empathy and explain he understands why people would be shocked by the action
Instead he jokes about it in order to inflame the situation further
I didn't see the footage before the outrage became public so can't say how I would have viewed it in isolation.
It's not a good look, sure, but I don't see it as the major issue that some do. There are better reasons to be outraged over the Trump administration than this.
The large-scale adoption of EV vehicles is a game changer that offsets anything he's done wrong thus far afaic.
Twitter (or X) is weird, but not materially weirder than reddit. I visit reddit and the SRP for outrageous LW views and twitter for outrageous RW views - it keeps me balanced in hatred for the lot of you!

Attacking any and all criticism.
But they viciously hate Greta Thunberg.
The ADL criticised Elon over his follow-up offensive jokes. They're not scared of calling Elon out.
