What's there to work on? Honestly it should be 25 going to the Cats and maybe a future 4th coming back our way if anything. If we chuck in more it'll be disappointing.

Gotta say, one of the worst things we do in trade period is be fair with our first offers. Year after year we do it. We come in at fair, the opposition come in at extreme expectations, and then we end up over paying. Dixon for 10+ change when 10 was enough and our first offer. Ryder for 17+37, when 17 alone was enough and our first offer.

It's time to start entering these negotiations as our opposition does. We should've walked into the first Cats meeting telling them we'd give them pick 48 for Esava, or we walk him to the draft.
To balance out Mackie's expectations we should have started out asking for Esava and 8 for our second rounder.

"The Power have offered pick 25 for Ratugolea, but the Cats are set to explore an extra pick or pick swap sweetener which could help improve their return for the key defender.
There is also the possibility a third club could get involved to help satisfy Port and Geelong in a player or pick exchange, similar to the three-club deal which found Tom Mitchell and Ollie Henry new homes last year in the final hour of trade period."

Seriously, we better not be coughing up more
If the more is in the form of a token pick we get for Lycett or Clurey then it's shit but fine.

Any more than that is ridiculous.

Yep, the few times I watched him this year, he was legit Jonas levels of bad
Kane Cornes said a few weeks ago that Port’s known trade targets were uninspiring. For once, I think he’s right. Yes, we need to be better in the key defender and ruck positions, and yes, it won’t take much to improve on what we had in 2023. But it will take some fantastic coaching, player management and development to turn Ratugolea, BZT and Sweet into premiership players. Macrae could probably do it. Few others could. As of now, we don’t have a defensive line coach. That fact and Hinkley as senior coach depletes me of any confidence that this year’s likely acquisitions will end up improving our side.

At this stage 'able bodied' would be an improvement.

It's just bad negotiation from us.

Most negotiator know that an opening bid can act as an anchor for any subsequent negotiations. So, you don't go in with your final offer unless you anticipate walking away early.

It might be, in the present situation, the club has decided its best and worst case alternatives to negotiating for Esava is to get him through the draft. In that case, the position makes sense. However, as you point out, this is the way they often go about it. That's where it's crap negotiating.

Was surprised looking on the cats board that a lot think 25 is fair enough and believe at the end of the day they will accept it.

Even on Twitter the general consensus of Cats fans has been take the pick and run.

I guess Mackie has no one to talk to and this is the only way he can get people to talk to him. Even that hasn't really worked out.

He's right, but he's just saying it to set his run for "how could Hinkley do better than 9th with the cattle he's got" next year though.

Yeah but if you want to be everyone's 2nd favourite negotiating team you try and offer what is "fair" straight up.
