Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

How does it work - say the bid comes at pick 8 - the pick before ess? Do they then have time to work out a trade before matching the bid?
I mean there's 6 weeks between the end of trading and the draft. We had a trade lined up two years ago in case ADJ was bid on before our second too.

I'm sure the clubs above them have spoken to Kako, as he's a good prospect. The bid won't come that early. Just another article to pump out for Cal.

true but we will get kako, just depends on what we need to match to get him, if he is bid on before our first pick.

kako has already said he wants to get to Essendon and we want him - it will get done.

16 years in a row, we had a good run.

Yeah, I just can't see a small forward going inside the Top 10. That's midfielder and forward territory.
They regularly do. Watson, Sheezel, Rachele, Rankine, Henry, Tarryn Thomas, Ah Chee were all small forwards heading into the draft and went top 10.

Doesn’t matter if we trade up past saints and Melbourne take him at 6
Surely no one actually believes that?

Kako has been a mid teens prospect all year. Then, all of a sudden during trade week (when barely any other draftees are being spoken about), he becomes a top 5 contender.

All the while we hear about how hard Melbourne are coming for pick 9 (or other picks in that vicinity).

It's not that hard to conclude that Melbourne are floating this Kako bid nonsense to try to unlock a trade for 9.

I'm sure Rosa and the team will be wise to it.

you are talking far too much sense for BigFooty old mate

If Melbourne, Richmond or the Saints bid for Kako at 5/6/7, Essendon can:
  • Match bid using pick 9 = Kako + 2nd round pick at 31
  • Not match bid = No Kako, other first round pick at 9, 2nd round pick at 31
  • Trade out of 2024 for points and match bid = Kako, 2nd round pick at ~31, first round pick 2025
If they rate someone at 9 much higher than Kako, don't mind missing out on him and don't want to take the risk on the 2025 draft then fine, but the best option is to clearly line up a trade (or two) for draft night and trade out of the first round if a high bid comes for Kako. No need to do anything before then

They blinked last year, worth it for clubs trying to test them again.
