I got the impression Longmire isn't keen on playing McVeigh this week when watching his presser.

And talked about how good Jack is in the NEAFL for development of others (noted Rowbottom).

Was definitely pretty cagey about them coming straight into the seniors.

It does seem like the eyes have started to shift further towards the future now.

Edit: this is possibly even more so given that we keep losing players during games

Yes, I did get the ROK about it. Although I'd be happy to see him play R23...deserves that (as did ROK and Teddy I guess but they had finals).

Might have been back in the day but David Rhys Jones as a 17 year old played an under 19 game, reserves the next week and Senior footy the week after that for South. When you've got no socks on you can't pull them up so a punt needs to be taken this week regardless if they like it or not. It is not if he is going be killed out there. Slim hope of finals still alive the more you run the gauntlet with an injury prone Reid or stilletto legs Alir that goes down the drain in an instant if they fall over playing in the ruck. Although finals are not important in regards to where the club intend to be in the next couple of years you should take no risks for the future with your KP Bookends. Chuck him in there nothing to lose. If he gets handed his backside by Zac Clarke and it destroys his confidence he is to soft to be an AFL Footballer anyway. Baptism of fire can be the making of a player.

Totally agree about the risk to the two KP bookends. AA in particular has no idea how to ruck and is an accident waiting to happen.

Chuck the new ruck in and tell him to crash into Clarke and McKernan and who knows he may have a good influence on the game. No point in him playing 2s and being introduced to kids who have just started shaving.

(I saw Rhys Jones in his first or second game - towelled up Robby Flower)

I've got no doubt KJ has been retired.

McVeigh. I'm not so sure about.

You shouldn't be risking your best KPF & KPD at centre bounces. We need to have a contingency until Cameron is fit and risking Reid and Aliir to long term injury and unsettling the structure is not worth it.

Clarke is next to useless so I'm sure Knoll at his size can make a decent contest at centre bounces. He doesn't have to stay on the ground for long periods, just do the centre bounce and work his way off at the next suitable juncture, it's probably what Clarke will do for Essendon anyway.

Other alternative is to use the leaping Amartey or just use someone like Fox and get the mids to rove to Clarke. All of these are better alternatives than risking Reid and Aliir.

He'll make way for McVeigh.
Don't need tall forwards re the dons.
2 rookie rucks now?

I would rather hold McVeigh back for a week.

It is the MCG and Essendon have quick players who can break through the middle. So he might have to do a bit of defensive chasing.

We will be favourites against Carlton on a smaller ground so could use his composure with the ball if we become a bit scrappy like against the Gold Coast.

Had a good chat on the weekend with a Geelong fellow who is a big member there. This was their biggest issue with him. The poor bugger just couldn't do it anymore for a whole game. It's no wonder with the knee issues he's had. He plays the wrong position to not be able to run back & forth. I fear he may not get another look in.
I hope he doesn’t get another look. Can’t see the point tbh ....

I'm in the 'Do NOT go into the game expected Reid &/or Aliir to be rucking throughout!' camp.

Listening to Longmire, and the way he spoke about Knoll, I thought there was a serious chance they would debut him this weekend. Something about the way he said 'you do have to start at some point' and we'll make that decision later in the week. I reckon he's well and truly in the mix!

He probably won't be quite ready, but following the bombers, we've got Carlton, Freo, Cats and Giants. I'd want him to have as much experience as possible before facing the cats and giants.

You're way off about Mcveigh dude.

Way Way Off. Should probably hang them up at the end of the year because another preseason and season next year could be a bridge to far and he could go out looking very ordinary if he falls off the cliff but he has done nothing to disgrace himself this year, has been consistent when he has played and is still 1000 % the most composed player ball in hand under pressure in the back half and easily the best distributor. Barring probably Franklin he is probably Still the best in the side anywhere on the ground. Time waits for nobody but apart from his soft tissues he has not digressed as much people would like to pretend.

I never said he has digressed. I said he can’t stay on the park. If he comes back next week, he needs to get through the seven remaining matches of the season (assuming we don’t make finals.) In the last two and a half seasons, he’s only managed seven straight games on two occasions. Other than that, he’s been in and out, in and out because of soft tissue injuries. When he’s been in he contributes. But you can’t contribute from the sidelines. The law of averages suggests he won’t make it through the next seven games in a row, so with his retirement impending anyway, I really don’t see the point in playing him. That’s a solid block of games we could continue pumping games into O’Riordan or even give Stoddart a crack. It just makes no sense to hold a spot for someone whose body won’t allow him to keep it.

So it is the players that are performing, not Longmire?

McCartin won't be playing...so we can move on from that IMO
Sam Reids strength is ability to run and drag his opponent around. He's not a stay at home forward. Hence why he gets rolled back in defense at times.
He's a perfect pinch hitter forward.
I'd rather go in with a small mobile forward line. EFC do have some decent tall timber. That s**t themselves when the ball hits the deck.
Why would McCartin not be playing?

McVeigh is, at least one week away at earliest and has not played for an eternity. He and Harry should not come straight back. Harry trained with the main group. McVeigh is not quite there yet.

Once soft tissue injuries get you then you are finished. Last season Macca was able to get over a late start and soldier on. But this year he has hardly been out there. As much as Longmire loves Macca he has to be sensible. Macca needs to come back through the reserves to confirm he is fit enough and not soft tissue damaged. I think he's finished due to injury bacause once you start to get multiple soft tissue injuries your time is up
