News Essendon exploring logo change

I had something like this.
Looks a lot closer in spirit to the original but I think the other version would be better from a branding point of view. I think my only gripe with the current logo is the 'Essendon' wordmark looks quite dated. But otherwise if this is what the club dished up I wouldn't hate it either. I just hope they stick with the Bomber and general shape of the current logo.

Man this is maybe the best example of a modern redo I've seen. this is really well done.

Thanks, it really doesn't take much. I usually prefer more creativity when it comes to rebrands, but I can't see how you could improve the current Essendon logo besides upgrading the wordmark and colours.

Logos became officially licensed in 1976.
Prior to that clubs various versions of unofficial logos.
The logos adopted in 1976 for many clubs were Scanlen's Footy card logos.

2016 was the time to start looking at a new logo. God knows why they stuck with the current one after 2013-16 ran it into the ground.

(Just quickly Mero, the Crows logo on a white background has this application, no yellow outline)

They'd mess it up if they changed it, Crows and Gold Coast's new logos are abominable. St Kilda's new logo is a downgrade, too. Not sure who's designing these new logos, they're pretty bad, maybe corporate board rooms are dictating that?

Agree, most current ones are a downgrade. I dont think we need a new one but were the only club who hasnt changed this century so I expect it to happen soon

My logo concept I put together when I first heard that Essendon was considering a rebrand
Isn't the bomber heading in the wrong direction, shouldn't it be plummeting to earth. :D

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

As much as I hate Essendon, I think they would make an excellent logo. Well done.

That's an amazing little timeline you have developed.

I still think the North logo from the late 80's and 90's is the perfect logo for us, I wish we never changed it, even if the shield looks a little dated these days. And it's the basis of our Bounding Kangaroo jersey which has become an iconic jersey for us. :(

Club is tight on cash at the moment, I reckon we'll rebrand when/if we win a final.
Clubs always have a terrible knack of changing logos.

They always seem so close to doing it, then win a flag, and continue on with the current version.

Or they bring a new one in 'as a new era starts' and they sink down the ladder.

They can never quite nail it.

There is a slight enough correlation between rebrands and finals runs in the last 15 years that I half wonder if there is something there:

Hawks and Cats new logos in 08 and meet in the grand final
Crows rebrand in 2010 make a prelim in 2012
Freo rebrand in 2011 and make the GF in 2013
Doggies new logo in 2015 and win the flag in 2016
Dees rebrand in 2016 and make prelim in 2018
Pies change logo in 2018 and make grand final
Eagles rebrand in 2018 and win the flag
Port new logo in 2020 and make prelim
Swans new logo in 2021 and make gf in ‘22.

Obviously all of those have way more context beyond just changing the logo, but I think it goes to show that rebrands often happen at strategic times. Essendon believes the only thing standing between them and being the most lucrative club in Australia is winning finals, I reckon they’ll waste no time putting resources into the brand if success seems close, but right now they’re scared as hell of pissing off the fans and don’t really have any cash to spare.
