Autopsy Essendon v Hawthorn

Bruest needs a tap on the shoulder.....it ain't rugby league and you can't take every player on all time without repercussions.
Bruest coasted today. Had a Birdseye view from the nosebleeds and lamented with friends his lack of anything much....notably effort. With Jed no better than a first gamer today and the kids in Scicily and OR not doing much as u expect of kids, the rest of the campaigners needed to lift. Too much was left for Hogde and Poppy. Rough couldnt snaffle enough - albeit with craaaaap inside 50 kicking. Add to that Chip going down (not that his efforts were any good at all), was just a horrible game to watch as the scum managed to wiggle over the line while playing like rubbish themselves.

I hope Gibbo and Mitch wernt just rested. Their were too many kids playing and it showed all day with the Hawks seemly a man short everywhere as the youngsters were unable to keep up with the game and locate themselves correctly. If it was just a resting - was arrogant of the match committee.

Not a great game but some interesting observations.

It appeared that there was a lot of space in the middle of the ground for the Essendon players. I think this is a combination of them working harder in to space to create the option and us just being off our usual work rate when we didn't have the ball.

The general accountability was lacking too. There was one instance where there was a long stoppage of play (think when Hooker went off with the blood rule). The stoppage lasted over 30 seconds and even after that time Essendon had a player free 40 metres ahead of the play. That's very un-like us.

What the game did highlight to me was that our structure is still very much watertight. Everyone on here says it's positive to stay so close even though we played poorly. That's purely because the way we set up is tried and tested. If we played that way with no system in place, we lose by 5-10 goals.

Teams are hungry for our scalp. If we don't brace for the initial onslaught we will fall short. So right now it's about finding form again and getting a few wins in a row on the board.

This is where the loss of Mitchell was big, he often sits in space about a kick away from the pack, he also helps to create in traffic which appeared to be missing.

On Lewis, I thought he was in your best half a dozen players today, when ever he had the ball, the Hawks looked better when he was involved.

If by the senior players you mean Hodge, Burgoyne and Lake then I disagree.

I'm taking about the lack of composure at the end. Forget everything that went before it (including 3 years of cheating, and appalling umpiring, several critical injuries, a few sub par performances from players, and the fact we barely played a half of footy) and we were 16 points up with about 5 minutes left.

16 points up, 5 minutes left.

Re-watch the last 5 minutes, then watch the losing 2010 and 2011 finals, and let's talk about panic.

We panicked. Simple.

Not sure that's a wrap. We only had about 3-4 who played well. Best dozen.....lol

Jono o'rourke - had this belief he is just an average player and first time seeing him play live today .. How he was a no.2 pick is baffling .. Even more outrageous is how we swap pick 19 for him ..

He is just not clean with the ball, always rushed, has bad bad hands ie, is a fumbles king .. Bad decisions.. No tank, no real speed, .. I m astounded how he was so high rated ..

Hawks have lost big in this one .. I think Maynard, miller, Goddard were available at this pick ..

You worked that out on one game?
His 11th AFL game.

I wish I knew that much about footy!

Forgot to mention for the five millionth time, that I absolutely adore Poppy.

And while Sicily is a good ways off, he showed some good signs today, for a dude who looks 16. I am going to end up adoring that kid I reckon.
Poppy never stops trying. I wish players like Breust had his intensity and attitude to every contest.

Has Poppy kicked the opening goal in each of our past 3 matches in a row?

His tackling was reasonable but disposal and decision making poor. Langford also seemed off. Watson and Heppell did what they liked.

Still can't believe how much space Heppel had. I thought Watson was massive the first quarter but didn't think he had too much of an impact afterwards except a few moments in the last minutes. In fact I can hardly recall a time when their midfield looked pressured at all. Their midfield had too much time and space going forward.

Our depth is over-rated.
Sicily, JOR & even Anderson have a lot of work to do to be worthy of being in the main 21.
What today showed is just how good Mitchell and Gibbo are.
We would have won with either of them playing.
Bombers will finish 4 - 6. Good team.

I don't know that our depth is in question....For mine, it was more the selection of these kids at the wrong time & for the wrong game....Simpkin & Whitecross should have been in ahead of both of them for THIS particular game, which was always going to be a hard & brutal slog.

We messed up in this game not only via the players mind-set, but at the selection table & in the coaches box!....Langford for a hard-tag on Heppell anyone?

A good lesson all round for getting way too far ahead of ourselves....You blood the kids in games against bottom 4 sides....Not in grudge-matches.

Heppell seems to be the new Judd in terms of the bloke you can't get a free against. Perfect tackles were either paid in the back (Burgoyne) or he simply did the old 'hold the ball for 5 secs, do a 360' without penalty, despite the new HTB interpretation.
