Too many luxury players when grunt like Mitchell isn't there. Isaac Smith is icing on the cake. Luke Breust is the decorations on the icing on the cake. Suckling is the top hat on the figurine decoration on the icing on the cake. Pushing them all up one rung of responsibility leads to results like today.
Not sure I agree 100%, but this is gold.

No doubting we missed Mitch n Gib today, and losing an AA defender 10 mins in to the game who is ultimately replaced by a debutant also hurt! But the loss of Shielsy is well and truly underrated IMO. Very solid inside mid who makes life for all the other mids, both inside and out, a little bit easier. He was missed today.. A lot!

An extremely cruel way to lose with the winning goal milliseconds away from being kicked, hope Clarko can use it as ammo to remind a few lads who may be getting ahead of themselves. With the $yd$ and Frem looking bloody strong, top 2 will be vital and dropping games we lead by 16 points with 4mins left may very well be the difference between a home prelim or heading north or west!!

In the words of your greatest ever player "if we destroy the evidence, we're not guilty"

How long did you spend delving into the archives looking for this gem of a quote from Dick Reynolds? Man, I had no idea you'd been holding out on us all of this time.

In all seriousness, I understand and completely acknowledge that it wasn't the result you were looking for today, but I think both sides will be better for the contest. From an Essendon perspective, we're still working into our season too. Best of luck for the remainder of the year. You'll be a difficult team to beat again this season.

Reality check we needed. Cant tell me that crap the media go on about us being unbeatable doesn't sink in sub consciously to some of the players.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs a nasty reality check will be waiting for them at Aurora next week.

Jono o'rourke - had this belief he is just an average player and first time seeing him play live today .. How he was a no.2 pick is baffling .. Even more outrageous is how we swap pick 19 for him ..

He is just not clean with the ball, always rushed, has bad bad hands ie, is a fumbles king .. Bad decisions.. No tank, no real speed, .. I m astounded how he was so high rated ..

Hawks have lost big in this one .. I think Maynard, miller, Goddard were available at this pick ..

It's been one game cool the jets. I thought he handled it pretty well. Was hitting targets when no one else was atleast. Had he kicked the winner we would have been circlejerking about how he was the next big thing.

I thought Lake was huge today. Burgoyne too.

Worth the admission price alone.

Agree - especially about Lakey. Took some telling marks in the back end.
And Silk - he is just so super cool and a master player.

Just thought i'd see if i can predict wot the discussion will be about wot went wrong in the last couple minutes: And WTF commentary: Commetti: "just find yourself barracking dont you"; Leigh: "yeah you do":eek:

You do Leigh?? thats the bombers you can see on your screen right ???:eek::eek::confused::confused:

what does what leigh said have anything to do with anything?

Heppell seems to be the new Judd in terms of the bloke you can't get a free against. Perfect tackles were either paid in the back (Burgoyne) or he simply did the old 'hold the ball for 5 secs, do a 360' without penalty, despite the new HTB interpretation.

Worst part is Jed has the ball for less than a second and is pinged for HTB the next bit of play. I thought the HTB interpretation was terrible today but you win some and you lose some.

I'm still baffled at the Lewis non goal. That was a clear tap down right or are my eyes screwed.

Hope we get another look at that.

Mitchell plays you win by 50 points. He is so far and away your best player, because he is just so damn consistent. You don't have a first half like that with him.

I didn't think either side played especially well today - given your outs down back we should have found easier routes to goal - but there's no doubting me that Hawthorn is still a far superior side.

Good to get a reverse of the game last year though.

Devo result.

Even in hindsight, Sicily was a terrible choice as sub. You always need to choose a runner and Sicily basically plays like a tall forward. Hartung should have been the sub. In the case of an injury, which is the point of the sub, Sicily would clearly leave us Too tall. Also , dons are CLEARLY lacking run, hartung would have been the much better choice anyway. Bringing in a first gamer tall forward is a terrible decision IMO. Even disregarding a potential injury, against Essendon with no preseason, who can't run out a game, you'd sub one of big boy cegs and go a runner!! Every bloody day of the week!! I commented before the game about this. Infuriating.

positives- We played as poor as we can , yet were still 2 seconds from victory. If Mitchell was in, or gibbo or even not losing Frawley we would have won. Joe only started taking marks on Stratts once Frawley was off. They were lucky to get us today that's for sure. 2 key defenders short also without mitchell.

JOR gets a pass from me, he had composure at least. Just needs to find a bit more of it.

Anderson played a shocker. I do love his aggression though but his skills and execution were off.

Sicily - imo an arrogant choice as a sub as discussed but battled. Pass.

As for people bagging Hodge and Lewis, they were both decent. Hodge was the only one winning a contest in the first half and lewis was good in the second. Efficiency was down but both had a lot of quick pressure kicks. The least of our problems.

The positives -
Puopolo - I freakin love him. 100% at all times, delivers for us at key moments, underrated in front of the sticks.

Rioli - I think he's in for a big season.

Stratton, was out gunned but gee he is a player. Gave 110% and hard as nails as always.

Gunston - worked hard.

Ceglar, burgoyne, Hill, lake passes

Breust Rough Smith Duryea, Anderson absolute stinkers.

In Gibbo, Mitch shoe/spang

Out Frawley , Sicily, JOR/Anderson

Your eyes are screwed - it was a throw every day of the week
But then, I wear glasses

Essendon sub Jason Ashby culled Poppy in the 4th quite well... I thought he was fairly quiet at times where we really needed his pressure and kept an eye on the matchup. I thought that move really helped them. Essendon have some quite underrated small defenders. Our small forwards might've had off days but I thought their opponents simply pooped them.

As i remember goldstink was red hot on holding in the 50

Goldspink was a true campaigner whose bias and / or empty head, altered the outcome of the 2011 preliminary final.
Don't know about you fellas, but i recon he's a dead set Campaigner, and aren't about to forgive.

Ceglar copping a fair whack but I don't think mcevoy did anything that allows him to walk tall.
Time for the return of hale

I thought McEvoy was a complete non entity today yet he's getting quiet a view kudos in here and votes in the Yabby. If he was any presence at all (same as Rough) they wouldn't have switched him to full back and Rough in to the ruck.

My point was there was plenty of holding in our f50 today

Not complaining, we have to be better than the umpire factor, its the hawthorn way

Btw is that melbourne or the saints at the foot of the ladder ? :)

Didn't appreciate those second, third and fourth efforts on the wing and basically blanketing Carlisle? Thought he put in a good shift.

At the very least he tried. Can't say the same for alot of other players.
