Apologies if already posted, but thought this story in the big paper today was another magnificent example of Eugene going the extra yard for the club.

http://www.theage.com.au/sport/tree-that-almost-stumped-the-roos-20091201-k3sh.html

...I immediately wandered down to Arden Street from my office at Etihad, probably with a view to finding a way to get rid of the tree, and discovered that the tree had died six months earlier and been cut down by council. Of course, I immediately made mention of this to our Kangaroo-supporting architect, Gray Barton, and presto, the design was changed, making the building straight and not only did it look better but it has saved us around a million bucks

Words can't describe what a legend this man is...

Roo-Hoo, I too am unsure whether this story has been posted before but, either way, I think it was remiss of you not to include the classic Eugene line

" When I saw the original plans the building had a curve footprint - and as any Italian knows, curves mean extra dollars"

I know - but where do you stop with quoting this one - the fact that he hasn't spoken about this before was probably the most impressive part.

This all seems so far from the night I went to Dallas Brookes Hall - everything was so uncertain then, and really felt like relocation was becoming a reality. That night marked the start of something special, with Eugene's appointment being one of the highlights.

Anyone else relieved to learn that the tree died six months before Eugene even knew about it? And apparently on the night it died, Euge was at a baseball game. With a priest. Who kept the ticket stubs.

The tree wasn't the victim of an Italian job, was it? :p

I wonder if there is a spike hole in the side of it with diesel poured into it.

I hear it was last seen fishing on the lake with Mr Neri.

Euge made the tree an offer it couldn't refuse?

Lets just hope they don't dredge the bay. :p

They just finished dredging it. It was done by Palermo Dredging Inc.! When asked if they'd found any remnant of an elm tree in cement, they answered "We don't see nuttin.................nuttin I tells ya."

Not even an acorn?

I'm as big a fan of Eugene's as anyone but I find it astounding that they didn't discover that the tree was dead and removed for six months. It was going to cost us $1M FFS!!! They should have known it from the word go.
Maybe it would have looked a little suss if we realised straight away that the tree had 'accidentally' died.

What I am unsure about is that if we saved $1m on this, and the mystery white night gave us $1m for the redevelopment recently to help get it over the line, then a little while back we would have been desperately trying to get hold of $2m to make the project work. Am i reading this right? Dare I say it, alls well that ends well but there would have been some serious shitting of bricks.

Maybe thats where the two pallets that went to auction last week came from? Would love to see the certificate of authenticity on those babies.
