Any cool stories?

One of my mates, who was eventually drafted to St Kilda, ended up getting belted by Gary Moorcroft after filling in for our local senior team.

I played against Tom Sheridan at junior level. Nothing really interesting, he was being hyped up as a future AFL player and naturally dominated but didn’t think he was that great. Handballed a hell of a lot. Must have kicked 5 goals though.

Anyone who has played footy in Sydney has probably come up against Troy Luff at some point. At the tender age of 48 kicked a bag of 6 against my club and had some good banter too. Great guy

Joel Reynolds and Jimmy Bartel in school footy in year 11. Reynolds was raking kicks 50 metres no effort. Had speed and athleticism. Bartel played a half, marked everything and kicked 3-4. Went off at half time and didn’t go back on. We all knew who he was. We had some decent players in our team, 3 were drafted. No idea why he played a game of school footy in his draft year, was probably just for some touch. Clearly was more than a cut above.

GWS squaddies pre AFL season used to get around the Kambah indoor sports centre in futsal from time to time. Belter of punch on between them and an ADFA team (nothing out ofthe ordinary. the grunts were always in it for a fight)

Played in the middle against Des Headland a couple years ago. ****ing slaughtered us in stoppages, but dude was great at bringing his team mates into the game. Looked to handball off more often than not to try keep us in it as much as possible, and we still lost by 200+

Played a bit of AFL 9's on the off seasons from Veterans/Masters footy.

I played 9's at Floreat regularly for a while and ended up at different times playing against Quentin Leach, Drew Banfield and his brother who is also a handy player, Ryan Turnbull and Phil Matera. One time when I wasn't at 9's Woosha showed up and played as well.
Leach I basically shadowed for a whole game, drew me off the ball really. The Banfields ran me ragged, played good footy I was barely close. Turnbull in the ruck I think so I didn't play off him or anything and trying to stop Phil Matera from scoring is an exercise in futility.

Pretty much all good blokes as far as I could tell and I'm glad they were just having fun and not really trying.

I once found $5 in the goal square I shit you not, straight in the sock.

Was playing down back one day and this dude was a mega mouth (I was around 16 playing senior reserves) anyway I got the ball and this dude (mature man) came at me, to this day I don’t know why or how I did it but I waited for him to leave the ground and gave him a helping hand making him land flat on his face, he was pissed, came charging at me yelling “you’re ****ed!!”, I pretty much froze expecting the worst and he somehow lost his footing around a metre away from me, slid into my feet and I ended up on top of him, cavalry arrived at that point and the ump sent us both off lol, team mates were saying how tough I was.

We sung the song if we lost by less than 200, and it was party time!!

I wasn't playing but I watched Damien Cupido play a local game about 5 years after he retired. He looked like he'd eaten a flock of sheep. Size of a house. He played out of the goalsquare and kicked 14, barely breaking a sweat. The incomparable skill was still there, as naturally gifted a player as you'd ever want to see.

played against Mark Athorn in U16's a few times in '83,didnt stand him but i remember him being f****n hard at it,absolutely no fear, thats whats stuck with me,cant recall him being totuted as future VFL @ the time,he may have been but i do recall when we were coming up against his side he was all we spoke of and planned for.

I didn't play against him (cos I was in the reserves that day) but I watched ex Saint, Hawk, Cat, Tim Allen lazily put away 11 goals against our senior team. He's three years older than me so we would have been close to 40 at the time.

I think it was a couple of seasons ago (last full season played) that he finally won a Grand Final after appearing in about ten or so. Apparently just genuinely loves playing the game regardless of what lower grade of local footy he might now find himself in.

Luffy was still running round in the AFL9s comp at moore park a few years back. He, ah, plays to win.

the Moore Park comp has a reliable rotation of ex-Swans who get roped into delivering their mates’ teams an elusive AFL9s premiership.

He still takes thirty seconds to line up shots for goal too!

heard hed accidentally find team mates wallets in the changerooms as well :)

Greg Bentley (former Carlton and iirc Port Adelaide player) kicked something stupid like 21 against us in U16’s. Dude was a freak

In school footy, we had Marcus Marigliani, Paul Johnson (ex Melb/WCE), Damian McCormack (ex WB) and a host of exceptionally talented local footballers. Safe to say we uh, had a good year.

Played with Ryan Bastinac (ex NM / Bris) in Juniors. Bloke would run, and run, and run and pick up touches for fun. Fun fact? He’s back at our very same local club with dad Peter (coach) and brother Jordan for 2022.

You would have played against St. Peters college then, I watched a school match in which my son was playing for his school and Paul Johnson was in the opposition team, looked like a man playing against kindergarten children.

I played cricket with a lot of guys who'd played against Blewett at school and they all said much the same thing.
