F1 2022

Dan really only has two options for a F1 seat next year, a sideways step to Alpine (A team he left 18 months ago) or a backwards step to HAAS (which will also mean a massive paycut moving forward).

You would think Alpine would be the best move career wise if he still wants to be relevant in F1. in saying that, he may just be forced to plod around in the HAAS if he wants to keep his f1 career alive if he cant get the Alpine seat, as sitting out for a year etc will mean the complete death of his F1 career (its not like he is a former WDC like Schumacher, Alonso or Kimi all who left and then came back to F1).

But hey, at least he still got paid out his full contract, so cant feel too sad for him.
Kevin Magnussen never won the WDC, and that didn't stop him returning to F1 after a year on the outer...

But yes, I'd suggest he'd want to find a drive for 2023 or his chances of being in F1 in 2024 are fairly slim.

Isn't Williams also available?

In any event, if he cannot line up Alpine it's difficult to see him in F1 for 2024. Haas and Williams would be major backwards steps a la Bottas to Alfa. Maybe just one last paycheque before he calls it.

Does this mean McLaren will also announce Piastri just before Spa?

I think that one is subject to courts isn't it?

Fair point - would McLaren announce Ricciardo's departure this early without confidence that Piastri would slot in, though?

And yes, I am aware of the wrangling over Palou in Indycar.

the story i heard is his contract was backloaded so maclaren were up 4 big bucks. they could have forced danny ric 2 stand out 4 12 months in the event of a full pay out, so he negotiated a lesser amount so he could drive next year. if he’s true 2 his word & only wants 2 go 2 a competitive outfit alpine is the only option as things stand. their management has changed a lot since his departure & he did drive well 4 them , so.......

100% Piastri will be driving for McLaren next year.

Alpine are just putting it all through the courts to get paid, although they are saying they want to hold him to contract and drive for them next year, they know that ship has sailed, so they just have to keep up that public perception until they get their money.

Will also be why if RIC is going to Alpine, it won't be announced until the Piastri stuff is finalised.....cant be arguing that Piastri should be driving for you, if you publicly have already filled his seat

Or a team does a Sauber and somehow has three drivers signed for two seats...

It's a multi billion dollar industry but it has been known before to end up with messy contract legality issues.

F1 is a bizarre sport. I vividly remember a young Ricciardo getting promoted from Toro Rosso into Webbers seat at Red Bull. Ricciardo proceeded to smash 4 time world champ Vettel in both qualifying amd race results for a year. Vettel getting beatem by a young driver was rewarded with a Ferrari seat.

Ric on the other hand might be out of the sport after getting smashed by Norris. Sure, you can argue that Vettel was a 4 time world champ. But when you're in the best car on the grid you only need to beat your tm8

Whats more impressive - a young Ricciardo smacking Vettel (who had sat in that RBR for 4 years), or a young Norris (who had sat in that Mclaren for 3 years) smacking Ricciardo?

Anyine writing off Ric because of the last 18 months is a fool. You dont lose talent overnight.

It's not overnight though. He's older all the time and despite some of the drivers (Ham, Alo etc), you would ordinarily expect them to fall away gradually as they get older.

So latest whispers is that Schumacher is a very good chance of landing the Alpine seat now…..so it may just be backmarkers or bust for RIC next year.

Norris is the first tm8 Riccardo hasnt beaten. In 2018 Ric was leading Verstappen heading into the Summer break. Upon announcing his switch to Renault suddenly Dans car had all sorts of problems and the RBR team prioritised Max as clear #1. Theres a case for saying Ric beat Max for 2.5 out of 3 years with the last 6 months unfair to judge based purely off the team dynamic change.

Pure speculation

A Dutch journo is saying that there will be grid penalties with Max and Charles starting from the back.
Yeah I remember hearing before the summer break that RBR would look to take penalties for Max’s car soon, and Spa was a likely track as they can make up positions there.

Surely helps when your rival for the WDC starts at the back besides you as well!

then that will be worth staying up late for. The 2 fastest drivers, in the 2 fastest cars, starting on the back of the grid at the fastest track (or one of them) on the calendar.

No it's not. First race back Dans car wouldn't start and he missed all of FP1. That was the first of his mechanical issues. And yes they did make Max # driver. Dan was even shut out of team meetings later in the year.
Your post was implying that RBR sabotaged their own car to spite Daniel and make Max look good
A ridiculous argument that has been attempted in the past.

Still think Dan will be fine getting a seat next year. I think he probably has the ability in the right car still, but more importantly for him in the current climate of entertainment he’s probably too popular to be lost to the grid. Someone will take the chance.
