Most disappointed we did not bring in a midfielder for our 3rd best mid. Along with the fact another decent pinch hit mid (Bailey) wasn't in the team.

Just stunk of ego selection, that GC weren't worth the effort and they'd be a decent opportunity for Lohmann to get some game time.

As for the game itself, it felt like GC wanted to make sure Andrews was made accountable and not allowed to float freely, which worked well for them and actually made us look very small when Lester got caught out a few times. I didn't really see many adjustments made at all during the game, we never really got any momentum to swing back in our favour or turn the tide.

The whole game just straight up reminded me of the Hawthorn loss. No on-field accountability, no effort and certainly fitness levels questioned again as we never run games out well.

Fagan won't get sacked but I hope he considers that retirement isn't far away and we need to be thinking of what the transition will look like post-Fagan era. It's an honest thought.

Nothing has changed my mind.
Likewise, only those seriously deluded would disagree.

At this point, I think Fagan is senile; I mean he continually gets out coached and makes the same mistakes over and over again at the selection table.

Imagine what an Adam Kingsley would have done with our list.

Too many players are too comfortable because they know they are never getting dropped. Only 2-3 in tonight’s team have ever been dropped under Fagan’s watch. That is absurd.

Maybe we should bring in Stuart Dew as our new head coach for 2024?

Yep, if Fagan can’t honestly recognise that he isnt the man to take us forward, then we are in massive trouble.

If he genuinely cares for this club and the premiership window some of this players have in front of them then he steps aside instead of putting himself before the club and wanting his 2 years.

We still have a very real chance of winning it this year if Fagan has the balls to shake these guys up and do a bit of truth telling . And consequences.

Maybe he is behind closed doors but today some of them played like they weren't worried about their spot for next week.

The one thing that did alarm we a little was how disheartened we played in the last quarter. Not bothering to chase ,morose looks on our faces.

Something wasn't right today. Not that we haven't seen this before.

Can't see the club not backing him in though.

But, if we are out of finals in straight sets again the discussions might begin.
Fagan’s finals record is straight sets twice and completely thrashed in two Preliminary Finals. I think we are well past the phase of being grateful because we are “relevant”.

I know team selection is often easy in hindsight and we look for patterns in the game that confirm our own views but how often do we get a bit cute at team selection for it to backfire in the exact way we expected it to?
Yep - spot on.

Also we finally start to click as a group and show some cohesion after dropping Gunston/Rich after the Hawks debacle but then we pick Gunston AGAINST WEST COAST AT HOME (a mulligan game if there ever was on) and of course Gunston kicks 6 and it suddenly justifies his selection again week after week...just baffling stuff

We looked so good and quick against Richmond. I still don’t know why we returned to the 3 tall structure.
Yep. Think we’ve seen enough with that set up, that unless it’s against a VFL opponent it’s not going to work for us. We aren’t the hardest running team as is, let alone carrying 3 slower tall forwards in that mix as well.

Will Fages have it in him to drop his mate again? Fwiw it wouldn’t surprise me if Jack doesn’t fly to Perth.

I still doubt it, by that logic Chris Scott should have been sacked long time ago, we will need to have a terrible year for such a discussion to be entertained (Hardwick 2016) although another straight sets is most definitely possible this year, we are mentally just too fragile.

'You've got to win anywhere': Lions not fussed by top-two talk

These comments from Fagan are appalling. Maybe he thinks he is giving off the “we are not panicking” vibe, but this sounds terrible. Fagan basically stating that he’s not really fussed about the possibility of having two home finals, which is our best chance of a Grand Final berth, provided we finish top 4. Travelling to Melbourne in the first week of the finals against Collingwood, a game we probably lose, no worries. Then a sudden death final at home, which if we win means another interstate trip, with the possibility of a third interstate trip for the Grand Final? No sweat that’s fine. We don’t care. So what if we don’t finish top 2. There were LEARNINGS TODAY! LEARNINGS I TELLS YA! Fagan is seriously losing it.

Then we get softened up for BULK MULLIGANS, because we shouldn’t really worry that we were beaten by an out of form team that was 14th on the ladder before today. You know, best not to do anything rash. Fagan has really run out of things to say and based on today, he’s really looking like a coach who has a severe credibility problem.

It’s a stupid line of thinking.

We have to be a much better team away from home to earn a top 2 spot but at the same time it would make getting through to the grand final a lot easier from a top 2 spot because we are at least a 5 goal better side at the Gabba

As amazing winning every home game is we can’t expect to finish top 2 losing most of our away games

Nutty gobbledegook , walking comotose through the H/A season ,whatever happens happens ,it's all cool , let's see where we end up.

He never said we were aiming at top 2 . Wtf. So it's fine that we don't. Because he never said we were aiming for it.

I understand it's hard to say anything sensible after a loss like that today when we had an awesome opportunity , but geez I'm starting to wonder whether he's in the right frame of mind.

The players certainly weren't today , it didn't come out of nowhere either . Mental lapses for the duration and during games are something we're getting accustomed to.

We're still well in it but really disappointed that we'd go so poorly when we potentially had a season defining opportunity

He did say we aim to finish as high as we can

Should be worried though that our form over the season hasn't earned us a top 2 spot

We've won 9/9 at home and still have another 2. With that sort of record it's perplexing how often we go to water when we play away.

Maybe we're a bit deluded in how good we think we could be because good teams press on through adverse conditions and get better.

As long as we finish Top 4 without any more significant injuries the outcome of our finals series will tell us a lot .

Well said. In over 50 years of closely following VFL / AFL - I’ve never heard more self deceptive rubbish from a senior coach than I have from Fagan, especially this year. The bloke who gave us “MULLIGANS” and “LEARNINGS” is now trying to tell us we’ve never planned to lock in two home finals, so if we fall short, that’s OK - really, it’s not a biggie. Fagan is seriously starting to sound like he has lost his grip on the players and the job is too much for him.
