Coach Fages and the coaching group

I'm not convinced Fagan was planning to coach past 2023 or 2024 at the longest. If this is set to take a long time - guilty or innocent - I can see him putting the club first and resigning so they can find a replacement.

I thought this too. But on 360 recently he said ‘I’m contracted until the end of next year and I’d love to stay on beyond that if the club want me’..

I reckon without this a 2 year extension would have happened before the season started.

Now that we face potentially losing him, you realise how lucky we are to have him - the stability his created, I picture our group being lost without him there to anchor everything.

Yeah, his likely loss will be massive.

I'm inclined to the view that Fages will resign if the process is too lengthy.

That being said, it'd be nice of the AFL to give us extra time to finalise our coaching positions for next year.

But I don't think its unreasonable of the club to begin assessing options. I'd be happy to give Fages 12 months to sort it all out and return to what he started, but that's just me.

Someone forgot to watch how we went defensively this year? 🤔

Marnus Labuschagne might have had to wait a further few years if Steve Smith did not get ruled out with concussion regarding an Ashes test. I just think Lyons was played too long and I was calling for Dev throughout the year, and I still think (hope I am wrong) we now may lose him.
If he wants to go, we can use his trade to our advantage. I am not opposed to him moving clubs as long as we get compensated appropriately.

I'd rather keep him. His two way running and fitness could be a real asset next year. Could have one of the best contested ball winning mids/wings with a lot of two way running ability.

If you consider pick 38 compensated appropriately.

Me too.

I hadn't been overly wrapped in Dev until the last 3 games where I felt he stood up well under pressure and showed more grit than some of the seasoned players.

Everyone's got a price. I'm not sure we'd extract a lot of value for him at this time.

Of course if he really wants to go and someone else really wants him then we may have to deal.

I'd prefer not.

I was hoping Fagan might have got punted upstairs and a new coach appointed in the off season.

Don't think he's coming back from this, even if innocent. Especially, if innocent.

Hard to know what to think, really.

If he has to go, a lot of the names discussed here sound good. Nigel Lappin would be the dream, but a total outsider to the club like Jaymie Graham could be the fresh start we need also.

I quite like Giansiracusa.

Understated , not out there , talks about footy in an intelligent perceptive way. Dunno whether he can coach or not , unfortunately.

Reminds me a bit of Fly. It's a shame Fly got away from us.

Pick 38 would not be acceptable. He is a better player than pick 38.

Yeah I'd be insisting on a late first/early second for Dev. Showed enough in finals.

Would Choco be a serious option? I know he’s been out of the big chair for a while, but recently was coaching in the VFL and is now an assistant at Melbourne.

What are peoples thoughts around how long the club waits before making any decisions on whether a replacement is required at least in the short term? I assume from a coaching perspective nothing really happens until preseason and this period a lot of it would be left to the list management team/Daly etc?

I'm expecting a heads up from AFLHQ either way. Our club will make their moves accordingly.

I'm sure feelers are out there already and "what ifs" are getting played out inside our club. Crisis planning 101, Board would've met over a concall at least, Swann would've had a few meetings etc.

It’s difficult because the scale and severity of the accusations would indicate this is not going to be a speedy review. Pre-season begins early December or thereabouts usually?

I’d be thinking the closer it gets to then the more we should start thinking about hiring a replacement.

I adore Fages for all he’s done for the club. But we can’t spend 3-4 months with him waiting in the wings only for the allegations to be supported in the investigation, only to then have to scramble to find a new head coach during preseason.

One option would be to appoint Mark Stone as Interim Coach, pending the resolution of the Fages situation. If Fages comes back then he steps back in. If not, then Stone assumes the role until we find a replacement...this approach could be activated by the Club any time soon.

I really do admire Fagan for everything he has done for our club. He has made us relevant, players want to come here and the culture from the outside looking in appears the best its been in well over a decade.

I was concerned at times this year, well quite a bit actually, with team selection and match day coaching. None of that detracts from my first paragraph.

I think the writing has got to be on the wall that Fagan won't be coaching in 2023 given how long this process will take. That is a real shame as I think the team with the new inclusions could have bared Fagan the fruits he's deserved in the past 5 years. That simply won't happen. Now I was probably more in the camp, if none of this drama eventuated, that Fagan shoulddn't be re-appointed beyond 2023 if things improved next year. And as others have said, maybe he only went for one or two years anyway and retired.

That all being said, with Fagan's blessing as hard as what it will be, but surely he sees that this isn't going to be resolved anytime soon, we immediately look to the future and move beyond promoting Stone or someone internal and hit go on a change we would have done in 2-3 years. Hopefully, whoever comes in has a Mccrae type effect and not a Rutten or Noble effect where the team and club aren't settled. But if we do bring somone new in, I hope they don't just inherit the assistants and really get to build their team.

I hate what is happening as much as the next person as were a stable club under Fagan and my greatest fear, as it was when we bottomoed out when there were countless compromised drafts due to GWS and Suns, is that just as we are in a successful window, other external forces come into play that severely impact what we are building.

I dont know enough about footy, but names like Caracella, Graham and one other untried assitant (not Uze tho) who I can't remember is that path I hope we pursue with them bringing with them a senior figure. I think I'll be sick if it is a Ross Lyon, Hinkley, Brad Scott type tho.

I need to get more positive tho as I feel as low about the club as i did in the off-season when the GH5 crew departed and when Vossy was shafted by that tool CEO whose name I have gladly forgotten. HAven't even bothered getting interested in the GF such has been the wind that has been knocked out of my sails.

Sigh- one thing this has taught me is that Fagan really has been steadying influence at the club and for its players and supporters alike and he'll be sorely missed if he doesnt return.

Credit to those who have been angling for getting rid of Fagan as coach - I have not seen any gloating or I told you so or thank God he's going or even silver linings type posts which is great. (unless of course there have been a bunch and they were reported/removed without me seeing them)

The “move Fagan on” argument has always been (in my experience) that he was fantastic for the club but may have reached his limit. Nobody wanted it to go down like this.
